IFT6 was meant to retry whatever went wrong with IFT5. I doubt anyone really expected basically everything to work. Yeah, about the only thing they can really do is tweak the flaps again to try to get closer to solving the reentry melting, but I personally don't expect them to bother changing anything there. So maybe it's now all about repeating the success solely for the sake of repeating it. It's not like it would be a better idea to scrap the entire stack at this point.
@imaginary_friend73003 ай бұрын
The flaps have been changed and moved on the V2, there is nothing to fix or tweak, the design is dated. They do have one other thing to do before they can consider recovery and that's the in orbit engine relight, so another flight could be more than a mere repetition. It would be a fools notion to scrap the whole stack at this point. They're making a lot of real progress.
@Asterra23 ай бұрын
@@imaginary_friend7300 They can't modify the flight plan, even for something as fundamentally insignificant as in-orbit relight, without jeopardizing the launch date. So I think the only new thing they're shooting for is the quick turnaround they can achieve by repeating IFT5. With a 4-week turnaround under their belt, that's ammo for pushing back against the FAA's inevitable future heel dragging.

If Elon's philosophy is, "The best part is no part", do you think he's considered eliminating the forward flaps? Why wouldn't smaller fixed fins do the trick? If the rear flaps are tucked in, it would nose-up. If extended, then nose down. In the middle, stable belly-flop. It could still turn and glide and do what it needs to do. The only thing that might be missing is yaw, but that is probably not needed at that entry height.

Because they use the RD-180, a Russian engine. After they invaded Crimea back in 2014 the US govt got a bit nervous about having a rocket dependent on Russian tech. This is basically why Vulcan exists - the Delta 4 was horrifically expensive and Atlas V fell victim to politics.

uggg SLS is another rocket that shouldn't exist.
@notarobot76203 ай бұрын
Ehh, debatable. It's a solid design by normal standards, but it just gets compared to Starship a lot, which isn't really fair. One is designed from the ground up to be a massive, cheap LEO hauler, the other is optimized for moon missions. And it is pretty necessary for the Artemis program, since Orion is the only thing in the world right now with a heat shield capable of lunar returns. Starship could maybe? do it in the future, but it would need a massive heat shield uprating that might not be possible with ceramic tiles. That being said though, it would probably be possible to design an Artemis architecture where Orion gets launched to LEO, docks with HLS, and then uses HLS to transfer to the moon. Problem is, Orion with the ESM weighs something like 30 metric tons. We don't actually have a launch vehicle that could heft that into orbit, short of SLS. Vulcan might be able to do it at a pinch, but it's not crew rated and probably never will be. Falcon heavy doesn't (as far as I know) have the structural strength to carry a payload that massive, and also isn't crew rated. So yeah, unless you want to design an entirely new crew capsule capable of lunar re-entry, SLS is what we've got.
@awilliams17013 ай бұрын
@@notarobot7620 if SLS was cheap it would make sense, but it's not. It's 4 billion per launch. It's not going to get any cheaper. Just from money alone I don't think we need it. There is no reason why starship and or new glenn couldnt' do everything needed.
@notarobot76203 ай бұрын
@@awilliams1701 Looking at Starship, I don't see how you stick a capsule on it without completely changing the design. Maybe slice the fairing off the top and mount an Orion... but at that point the redesign would be as expensive as flying a few SLS. New Glenn is... well it doesn't even exist yet, and Blue Origin are not exactly famous for doing things fast. By the time you've developed, tested, and crew-rated New Glenn, Artemis would have been delayed several years. I would not bank the entire Artemis program on the company responsible for the "where are my engines, Jeff" meme. Yeah, SLS is horribly expensive, but at the moment we don't have an alternative. Also, bear in mind that it's been in development for a while, and that when it was initially conceived Starship was still a few CGI renders. In the long run, I wouldn't be surprised if SpaceX either try beefing up Dragon's heatshield to do lunar reentries or maybe some shenanigans with Starship, if they have the mass budget for it. But I'm far from an expert, so take all this with a pinch of salt.
@jantjarks79463 ай бұрын
The Senate Laundry System does exactly what it has been designed to do. 😉
@notarobot76203 ай бұрын
@@awilliams1701 I don't see how you mount a capsule on Starship without changing the entire design, and it still has the problem of being unable to handle reentry. New Glenn is... well it doesn't even exist yet, and I wouldn't bank the Artemis program on a company with Blue Origin's timelines. "Where are my engines Jeff" is a meme for a reason. Though, looking into it, it seems like Dragon was initially designed to be capable of lunar re-entries with some modifications, so there might be a world where you launch a crew dragon on a falcon 9, dock it to HLS, have that perform TLI, and then use the dragon as a re-entry capsule. You might be able to cram Dragon's theoretical 7 crew in as well, because you could use HLS for living space. Dragon would probably need to undock and stay in lunar orbit while you land, but that isn't a massive problem. Ultimately though, SpaceX is just not very interested in the moon, for some reason. They're making HLS because they already had Starship in the works anyway, but they seem to be primarily focused on Mars.
