Minor correction about ship reentry: It’s only gonna do the higher angle near the end of the reentry profile and not for the entire reentry sequence, and this is also not the reason why it’s gonna reenter in daylight, it’s just gonna launch much later, 4PM rather than the regular 7AM local. Edit:Also, I’d probably recommend delaying the next STW (Space This Week) until Tuesday so that you could actually fit the flight into next week’s episode. It’s expected to launch for us Brits at around 10PM

Hi Matt - at 4:00 you say "..And thanks to the steeper re-entry angle the ship should hopefully land during the daylight" From what I can tell, the re-entry angle has nothing to do with the ship landing in daylight. It's because Starship/SH is launching at 22:00UTC, as opposed to flight 5 that launched at 12:25UTC - 10 hours difference ... Starship is landing in a similar location off the West Coast of Australia and I suspect the steeper re-entry angle would only make a few minutes difference - not hours... I just saw another poster pointed this out.. I love your channel - Great work.. Sorry to nitpick

When they do decide to catch starship upper stage is it possible to instead of threading the chopsticks grabbers into the slot could they use internal linear or pneumatic bars to extend out just below where the fin connections are out of the slots and land like super heavy booster? Im not certain as to how much extra weight that would be, but it would mean it would have to hover in place for them to get into position and could be as fast as the first catch while potentially being safer.

SpaceX seems comparatively much less aggressive in testing Starship vs. the booster. Didn't they plan on testing internal fuel transfer systems a while back? It seems like there's so much else they could be testing while trying to dial in the heat shielding and landing system.
@observer70702 ай бұрын
They did that already actually. I think during IFT 4. SpaceX is being cautious with starship because it is literally a few hundred tons of steel that can survive reentry. A lot of the tests need to be done in orbit but these can't be done unless starship is guaranteed safe. Success with IFT 6 should be enough for them to go full orbit. Then they also need a test to show starship sustainability and controllability for long duration missions. They really don't want a repeat of IFT 3 while in orbit.

To be fair the only thing that China could clone of starship is the raptor engines. As that is the only new and exclusive tech on the veehilce right now or really have every been reviled. Which Starship does not need by the way as is more of a liblity if I'm honest. Given the vast majority of destroyed star ships was soly because of the engines being prototypes. So in theory China could have a working Star ship long before Space X does. Unless Musk drops the engines and just uses off the rack ones instead ofcorse. But this is china that has been using that same rocket tech forever so I dodut they can pull it off with out it being just a reskinned long march... But they can and Musk should be worried as that could take away all his juicy sub orbital stuff. although I doudt china could do that outside of the axis of evil but still... Also that would be a boon to the axis of evil given how blockaided they are and a sub orbit transport service between them would be nice. But yeah while this is a clone I can't say it is stolen tech as all what starship is, is very public infomation.
@eikopoppy292 ай бұрын
The Raptors, and the orbital refueling tech are the only thing that will make it work. You can't just make a big tank and some catching arms and have a Mars colonizer. If you have a huge heavy rocket you need extremely efficient engines AND orbital refueling or else it won't have any useful payload. That's why Saturn V could launch a mission to and back from the moon but Starship currently can barely get an empty ship into LEO. It'll be a game changer if they can invent both of those technologies but only if. And China certainly won't any time soon. They can't even make airplanes let alone space ships.
