What most people don’t realize is that SpaceX is the only company that assembles its rockets, both the booster and the ship, directly at the launch site. In contrast, other companies transport fully assembled rockets to the launch pad. Additionally, SpaceX is unique in lifting its rockets onto the launch mount on-site, whereas other companies wheel in pre-assembled rockets and their support structures onto the site.
@A_Canadian_In_Poland9 минут бұрын
Not totally original. The planned but never launched Space Shuttle at Vandenberg in California would have been assembled at the launch site as well, with a mobile building around the vehicle during assembly.
@ToeCutter03 минут бұрын
So much of what SpaceX has accomplished with Starship & Super Heavy Booster is simply overlooked by this spectacular landing. I've read that using chopsticks for recovery vs traditional upright landing like Falcon 9 will extend the useful lifecycle of Starship + SHB by nearly FIVE times?! Once one realizes how much "compounded savings" SpaceX will enjoy by assembly AND fueling at launch site, using cheaper propellent, chopstick recovery, etc, etc, and SpaceX will dramatically reduce the cost per KG for LEO insertion. It was never technology that prevented frequent trips to LEO, it was always cost. SpaceX is leading the world in reducing that high cost, which will inevitably lead to affordable space tourism. It's a remarkable time to be alive. 👍

@ToeCutter013 минут бұрын
It's clear that the vast majority of folks who saw this amazing feat of engineering simply cannot comprehend how incredibly complicated this maneuver was to get perfectly right. Nothing like this has ever been done before because it's so incredibly difficult. This approach to recovering heavy booster dramatically reduces stress on the booster, ensuring a much longer lifecycle for SpaceX super heavy boosters. The data captured by chopsticks during recovery will improve safety as well. This approach to recovery will reduce the cost of lifting mass into LEO by allowing SHB's to be reused more often. A simple analogy would be using a flatbed truck to transport a vehicle instead of towing one behind a tow truck and putting significant wear on the vehicle being towed. The SpaceX Super Heavy Booster still weighs over 300 TONS after expending its lift propellent. That's more than TWICE the weight of the Statue of Liberty! SpaceX has pulled off "catching" a vehicle that's considerably heavier and taller than the Statue of Liberty on their very first attempt. I'll be the first to admit that SpaceX fell significantly behind schedule with Starship and SHB launches, but holy cow did they make some rapid progress in 2024!

6:00 Landing it on legs was the original idea - which had to be abandoned after almost 10 years in development. Why was that not mentioned? As an engineer who follows these developments closely this feels like a puff piece. Every technical development has pros and cons and I can't find a single con mentioned.
@aerostorm_Сағат бұрын
Square-cube law. The overall ability of legs to support the rocket body on landing is dependent on the size and weight of the legs by a square ratio. So when you increase the size of the rocket body, you have to increase the leg size by a larger factor. At some point, legs are not cost-effective. These weight savings are gained by moving hardware off the vehicle and onto mechazilla. This increases the total carry capacity to space.
@everydayengineering817Сағат бұрын
@aerostorm_ Thanks for sharing. My understanding was it was largely due to the inability to find an effective method to control acoustic damage. They tested legs on the starship booster which tells me that weight wasn't the primary concern. That is something I would expect to be caught at the preliminary design phase. Adding legs = adding weight isn't a complicated relationship that needs 10 years of development to determine.
