I know of a 93 woman with no Spanish at all, widowed while in Spain and no family there. Decided to stay out in Spain- reasons: good weather; good friends, good reasonably priced fresh food, good healthcare, she can walk the beach every day, eat out inexpensively. She doesn’t miss UK as she is committed to her real life in Spain. Key is to be grateful for what you have and be happy. No gripes.

I retired here just before the brexit, with the state pension and modest savings. I applied for and was granted Residency. I rent a 2 bed, fully furnished house (with 3 sun trap terraces and spectacular views) for HALF of what I paid in Brighton for a small studio flat. Council Tax is €100 a YEAR... and my landlord pays that. I simply couldn't have afforded to stay in UK. Here, I live in comfort

We love Spain Stuart. We are Canadians, living in Canada. My wife and I have been coming to Spain every year, since 2010 for two months staying the months of March and April, sometimes extending to May, until it starts getting crowded, spending wonderful times with people of Costa del Sol, making lots of friends along the way. And we take Fuengirola as center point, and explore all across Spain, enjoying wonderful culture, passionate friendly people of Spain, the food and amazing cities and towns. We love Spain and sadly Covid put hamper into our visits, temporarily though, but we will be there soonest travels start again. We know how wonderful Spanish people are, we missed Sol y Mar!!! I lived in Spain for over 30 years. Even before they joined the EEC. I loved every life experience I had there. I first lived in Almeria before moving to Tenerife. 90% of my amigos were Spanish. Had friends from all round the world. I still own property there and have tax residency. I now live in Thailand. Unfortunately not everyone in life can be successful. As a trucker I regularly drove across Spain delivering and collecting goods. I was always treated well in the villages I stopped in, especially when I took my family with me. I found the people to be friendly, helpful and thoughtful. Unfortunately that was never the case when I stopped in areas frequented by British tourists, where I was tolerated rather than welcomed. I concluded that it was because Brits on holiday, instead of enjoying the Spanish experience, insisted on the Spaniards proving them with home from home comforts and turn a blind eye to their hedonistic behaviours, which are at odds with the more sedentary lifestyle they enjoyed, with their children at the forefront of their attention. Of course when tourism forms a large part of a countries economy, compromises are made, if not enjoyed.

Having lived in a fair few countries around the world, I can definitely confirm that there's always someone like this, no matter the place. I find they're usually people who are trying to run away from their old selves, which is about as productive as trying to run away from your own shadow! ...people's less positive aspects tend to follow them wherever they go, but now they can blame their misfortune on the local country, rather than themselves. You can always re-invent yourself a tiny bit when you move countries, make a couple of minor improvements and tweaks, but expecting your fortunes, temper and character to magically transform by moving country is pure wishful-thinking!

I have lived in Spain for a couple of years now and love it. The one thing I sort of like about the nick anders thing it might keep the angry, entitled, smug people away. I have loved it here! I moved from the USA. I had a great life there but wanted to experience life here. I live in Catalunya, worked on my Spanish and now learning Catalán. We have made so many friends here from all over the world and here in Spain. I live in Barcelona and feel completely safe with the usual city precautions. We love the food, people, language, and cultural opportunities. People in the neighborhood are really nice we arrived at the beginning of the lockdown and our neighbors probably thought crazy Americans just came and when they understood that we live here they kicked into action with kindness and hospitality and best of all good advice and humour. When I run into bureaucracy I usually include it in the category of adventure of being here and people seem to help me work it out. Have you applied for a green card in the USA or residency in the UK lately? It might not happen when I want but has always concluded just fine. So much is attitude right? This life, enjoy it every day it is so short, find joy wherever you are. Learn the languages, don’t worry about being Professor Higgins. Be curious and figure out away to lend a hand. Take time to talk to older people. Once my Spanish was better I had really rich conversations with them and I look forward to seeing them in the neighborhood. I am grateful to the Spanish Government, Generalitat de Catalunya for the language education, cultural opportunities, vaccinations, and the Spanish people for making it possible. Every country has challenges and Spain has them too. But a day on the beach, the Prado, or the many places to go in BCN keep a smile on and in my heart.

Spaniards in general are very helpful and nice people and everybody likes to see British immigrants making the effort to integrate, rather than living in Little Britain ghettos, showing competent for the natives and only being there for the weather. Those won't be missed.

I am Spanish. I think my country will have flaws, without a doubt, but in general, Spain is a fairly safe country, with efficient police forces. It has a great health system, very good communication by roads, airports and trains. It is a country Tolerant, in general, homosexual marriage is allowed and there is little racism. It has a fairly wide territorial extension in European standards, and a great climatic, landscape, historical and cultural diversity. Excellent and varied gastronomy. Without a doubt the politicians are terrible, but Nor is Boris Johnson that stands out in his good management.

Spot on Miguel👍. We have corrupt politicians, thief’s drugs etc. I had my motorhome broken into 5 times in Spain and not once in the UK but that doesn’t mean everyone in Spain is a thief. Even got my little campervan broken into mid day in Agua Amarga. A real shame as the damage was more expensive than what they stole. If they had asked I would have given them the 2 pairs of worn out jeans. Spain is a great place and so is the UK. Love my little place in Mojácar and my farm in Oxfordshire. (Where we also get stuff nicked) Crap happens

I moved to Spain (Mallorca) in 2018 and I’m loving it. After 20 years living in Frankfurt when the UK voted to leave the EU in 2016 I took German citizenship which made it very easy to to become a Spanish resident. I am a pensioner and enjoy my life here. Up to now I have no reason to regret my move.

The dramatic opening titles showed general mayhem, accompanied by shots from a gun as places were highlighted on a map, one of them being Nerja. My experience of living in Spain, as an American (my point of reference): Good Roads/Infrastructure, easy to find good workers for home maintenance, punctual about appointments, fresh and inexpensive food, affordable real estate, almost as good as So Cal weather.

As soon as I saw the title "How can you hate Spain so much?", I thought I wonder if there is a connection with the Express newspaper, and so it was! This particular newspaper is a joke Stuart, and unfortunately there are others I would place in the same category. I don't buy newspapers anymore, or read their online versions. They are full of negative and exaggerated reports just to try and sensationalise news items in an effort to stop their falling sales. The Express was the first UK paper to come out in support of Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists, it then interviewed him the 50s, after he was released from prison, when he was trying to gain political power. The Express provided the platform for him to deny he was ever a fascist - which, considering he was the founder and leader of a group called the British Union of Fascists was always going to be tricky. Most recently it was owned by a Porno baron ( he "invented" "Readers Wives" magazine - a poorly laid out collection of tragically badly lit, ineptly framed, focused, etc of middle aged men and women attempting to look "sexy") tying to look respectable. It manged to rehabilitate the reputations of neither. To find the Express contemptible is to be sentient. Nice work again, Stu thank you for your commitment, style and the subtle use of the langiage

Hi Stu. I am pretty sure Nick Anders moved back to the UK. There was a comment on one forum from someone who said thank god he moved back. Very sad that this has surfaced again. He arrived in Spain having done no research a out life in Spain at all. He had no plan, he just thought he could land here and get a job. In the time I have been in Spain I have read articles knocking living here. But they all seem to have a common thread, no research, no planning and certainly no back up planning! As far as the article coming out again now, the Express is a very conservative and anti EU paper. I was living in the UK during the run up to the Brexit vote and during the Brexit vote itself and the Express was really EU bashing. This man wrote his blog in the year that Cameron announced his intention of creating a referendum in the country. At the moment the British government, especially Boris Johnson, are in very hot water with not only the people but also many MPs. There is your answer I think. When things are bad the Express loves to bash the EU, especially Spain. Helps take the heat off what's happening on their doorstep.

Make no mistake about it, Spain as tradition, culture and the people is one of the best country. However, there are always pros and cons here and so as other countries. However, There are some people putting some unrealistic comments about Spain, which are not acceptable to many. Keep that in mind there are always bad people around in every country. My own experience of Spain is of meeting, working and living with the most friendly and helpful people of all the countries I have visited and that includes the UK. For holidays Nerca came second to Benalmadina and for a family you will not find a more friendly environment. Learning enough of the language to get by was a great help and much appreciated. I really cannot think of anything negative to say. Even enjoyed the siesta working arrangements. Perhaps I did find it sometimes necessary to take an Alka-Seltzer after the favoured late eating arrangements. Appreciate your daily news bulletin and weekly chats.

When you move to another country, you have to adapt to the customs and language of that country. All countries have good things and others not so good. I lived several years in Australia, for me one of the best countries in the world and still I met people who complained about some things of the country. I find in general a lot of people are envious of Spain. Whenever I mention how great Spain is they get uncomfortable and go on about Italy and Greece. Maybe it's for historical reasons but whatever Spain is great, if you don't like it then you're free to leave. Spain has it all, beaches, food, people medieval cities and and they're mostly in great condition. Sure it has problems like everywhere but I'd still choose Spain over any where else!

Been visiting Spain for years. Love the country. We always base ourselves in Nerja. Never been robbed or ripped off, and as for the roads, wait till he gets back here. I'd call the roads in the UK 3rd world roads, in fact Ive been on better roads in Africa. Yes I'm sure there are problems in Spain like every other country in the world. But Spain? Things I really hate about Spain .. It's mostly sunny and has upwards of 18 degrees temps. You only have to wait twenty minutes at most times for a Bus which costs very little money The Spanish are much too child friendly when we visit. Hotel staff like to greet you with a hug if you are a regular guest If you try to speak some really bad Spanish the locals don't laugh at you too much The list is endless, Please take this as a tongue in cheek reply. Spain is not a place to come looking for a "real" career. I love the country but the job market is pretty bad. Having visited Nerja as a tourist, at no point did I feel unsafe. Crimes of property happen everywhere. Some people just are targets. Don't be a target. If you don't like Spain, leave. Go back to whence you came and let the rest of us enjoy all the wonders Spain is known for. Let the negative nellies cry.

There's good and bad at every lat/long on earth, with the possible exception of a few places in Afghanistan. But specifically about Spain: Roads - I've notice that the roads generally tend to be in good repair. Drivers - About average on the world crazy scale. Parking - pretty bad, but usually just adequate. Public Transport - quite possibly the best on Earth, definitely in the top five. Friendliness - Well above average...once you realize that when people speak curtly, loadly, or seem to be arguing, 95% of the time, they really aren't, they're just being Spanish (chuckle). Generally friendiless and acceptance is the principle reason why I would move there if I ever do. Home Construction - generally good. I'm actually a fan of anything built during the Franco period and prior, because they didn't skimp on building materials (and most of the items were still made in Spain. In fact, "Roca" knows more about me than any company at this point should). Not as happy about post Franco construction, especially housing flats. Jobs - Absolutely awful, especially for the young people where finding permanent employment is a pipedream. It's hard for both temp workers, small business owners, and start-ups. Working Enviroments - Actually close to as hard as they are in Britain or the States. That was my greatest surprise/takeaway from my last trip in December. Economy and Affordability - I continue to be surprised by just how much things cost relative to people's income. Gas, electricity, water, heating are all more expensive that I expected. Shopping and Variety of items to purchase - Regarding food, Above averge. With everything else, about average, and usually more expensive than I anticipated. I actually expected better on both fronts, but it could just be that I'm older, I have a better idea of items avaiable. Also, it could just be an effect of the logistics nightmare cause by Covid. Climate - Always surprised when I'm very cold in Spain, but come on! You can find whatever climate you want in Spain if you look hard enough. Ultimately, It just depends on what kinds of things are important to you, and what you focus your life around. Just like any other place on Earth, it's what you make of what's around you.

Roads maintenance and heavy transit is more comparable to the US in condition, but I still think that on average that Spain is better. Bus service is better. Access to potable water, electricity, and at least 4G mobile service is about the same. I've seen some of rural Spain, and I have stayed in one of two dying towns, but that trend is happening in many parts of Europe, as well as the US. It is certainly not a problem unique to Spain.

Spain seems a decent country to me, it is much bigger than the uk and less populated by at least 20 million people, so is more spacious, plus they have more daylight hours and warm weather. I think the downside would be having family living far away, less jobs, loneliness, Spain can be very quiet compared to the uk, also in the uk home interiors tend to look more cosier, a result of the colder climate.

@@colinsmith1288 That's exactly what I mean. Most of you just know really specific zones of Spain almost always near the sea in warm regions. Actually it's a very small surface of the country. But you can't imagine how cold can be the rest of the peninsula. The north of Spain is really cold in winter and the regions of the Atlantic and Cantabric coast are really cold and wet. Also, Spain is the most mountainous country in Europe after Switzerland and in those zones, cold is.... awful. We also have carpets on the parquet, cosy sofas, wood based furniture. We don't make furnitures with iron man, we use wood. Same about courtains and doubled glazed windows. The true Spain isn't that you see in the propaganda or in those small zones of Spain.

as far as moving to Spain I have no desire to do so, wouldn't give up my family for anything. having said that if I would ever move permanently to another country I would want to know the bad along with the good. As far as crime is concerned it is personal to that person, what I mean by that even if you have a low crime rate when a crime be it a break in or held at knife point you become a statistic and that would put me off in giving anyplace a good reason to move. And I have meet a native Spaniard who lived in the USA for ten years now and other then going back to visit family they prefer living here. So there is that, But where ever you choose to live in this world be well informed the good and the bad.

Having lived in Nerja i can confirm crime is a problem, burglary & robbery being the main problem. I was burgled twice in 4 years, mugged in between & had my car stolen. Spain is an option for retirement, not for anyone else.

I'm 60 years old and lived all my life in Spain. My car never was stolen nor did they rob me or assault me on the street. If you base your ideas on your own experience, you will never get an objective idea of what a country is like. In that sense, statistics tend to help and these say that Spain is safer than the United Kingdom with half the number of murders per year (for instance)

It regularly informs the British population how well Brexit is going. Boris Johnson says the same and as we all know he does not lie. In addition to this comment,Stuart. The headline in today's Daily Express praises Boris Johnson's " fulsome " apology for attending an illegal party at his residence during lockdown.Apparantly he "thought" it was a " works event". Looks like there was another " works event" the night before Prince Phillip' s funeral. The Daily Express and Johnson will clear this up for the British public and obviously continue to relate how well Brexit is going.

There are pros, cons, pluses and minuses to every country. It's also human nature to vocalise our views, irrelevant to whether they are agreeable or not (hence, Spain is no longer a dictatorship as is North Korea!) so, let us celebrate free speech has a given gift to 'all'. Personally I believe (where possible) it is good to experience different cultures and live in different countries. I had always been attracted to Spain and have always found the Spanish on the whole, accommodating. I have now lived in Spain for 3 years and within this experience it has confirmed to two things: The first being, it has highlighted the pros and the cons of both Spain and the UK. And the secondly: Made me reevaluate what I really value environmentally and socially. Therefore, this evaluation made me appreciate all what I never saw prior to leaving the UK and moving to Spain. So I put my new Spanish home on the market ( Thursday and sold it on the Saturday) and am returning to the UK with a more positive view of what I left behind. This is not in anyway a negative towards Spain, (if I had never tried it, it would never had 'highlighted' the positives of the UK) just the reality and realisation of what I personally value moreover the other.

In the 1980s I lived in a College Town in the USA. Knew a Journalism student who said she learned bad news sells, good news doesn’t. Negative titles get read, and today get clicks. Having lived in a foreign country one that was so culturally different from my own, I disliked it for the first 18 months living there. But after getting to know the locals, their culture etc, I loved living there so much that when I came back to the USA several years later I found living in my own country difficult. It’s called “Culture Shock”. Was this article “click bait” for The Express or even yourself, well you can see that by the # of visitors. What’s true in the news these days is subjective. Whether true or untrue, it’s media in the 21st century, it’s what you want to believe. Just visited this area & found it quite pleasant, as well as the people. I’d say unless you have actually visited a place, get more info before you decide to hate or love something. A well written negative article (whether genuine or fabricated) gets people's blood pumping either to agree or disagree with it. A lot of today's mental well-being is dictated by being submerged in the dross of fear mongering by certain news outlets that have to generate readership and subscription membership. Unfortunately, also, today's society seems to revolve around social media (not a bad thing if used sensibly) but can cause great anguish when exploited and manipulated to cause undue fear. If you have the ability to look beyond and analyse stories sensibly then the your world experience can be more rewarding. There is a lot of bad things going on in the world but also a lot of wonderful and enlightening things as well. It is the old adage " bad news sells" that prevails in today's mainstream. "Pinches of salt" and "skewed information" revolves around this particular article. It has appeared regularly over the years in various guises.

This comment is a bit unrelated to the video but I would love to hear your thoughts Stu on the new cuotas for autónomos in Spain. The proposed changes are going to result in a hefty increase of social security payments for those of us who are earning more than minimum wage and no clear increase in benefits. I think this will be relevant to a decent chunk of the audience who work online for foreign companies but live and pay taxes in Spain as freelancers (myself included).
