I laughed a lot watching this; not sure if it was the excessive amount of potatoes or something else. Spanish fare is almost always straight ahead. And I love dodgy-looking places. I've had some of my best meals in Spain in establishments like this. PS: Yes, too expensive, but you ordered for 2 people, really. So then not so expensive.

I think it’s commendable that you took the owner’s recommendation and ordered the potato dish, but just not with the other heavy choices. Since no one would order three raciones for one person for lunch, it’s hard to judge- but the final price was very high for lunch.

Agreed. I'm guessing they didn't offer a Menu del Dia or Stu would've ordered that. For weekday lunches, Menu del Dia is the way to go. For nights out, raciones are the way to go. I've lived in Madrid for nearly 20 years and would never order raciones for weekday lunch.

I'm from a town in Jaén, incredible stews have been cooked there all my life, but in practically no restaurant there have they been offered on the menu (I suppose for the reason "I'm not going to order something there that I eat every day." at home") and it's a real shame because these are incredible "old-fashioned" recipes.

No, una ración es lo que se considera apropiado para UNA persona. Si el camarero ve que dos personas piden una sola ración sacará dos cubiertos, si pides dos raciones diferentes con toda seguridad preguntará si son para compartir.

I always check to see if there are a significant of local Spanish people in a resturant. Empty, I skip it. Full of tourists, I skip it. Really long lines of locals, well I have to judge if worth the wait. This criteria works worldwide.

hola amigo. si, too many patatas in this meal. My favorite bull's tail dish in Madrid is the "regalitos de torito" at El Anciano Rey de los Vinos. It's a historic restaurant across the street from the Catedral de la Almudena. If you go on the first Wednesday of the month, you can also watch the changing of the guard at the Palacio del Real. 😎

Stuart, I find the price exorbitant for a menu for just one person. Moreover, they didn't even include dessert or finish with coffee, which is customary in those places or that country. Also, avoid "ajillo" potatoes wherever you see them; they're quite indigestible. In Almeria, for half the price, you get free calamari and dessert included, although the food in southern Spain tends to be lighter than in the north. Regards!

I've been to Chinchón a few times. I love Hostal Chinchón in the town centre. I'm not sure about the being-near-the-tourist-centre indicator for quality. I've had a plate of the worst ham ever & glass of the worst wine ever at a restaurant near the centre of Chinchón, so 🤷🏼‍♂️

You tend to share those plates, the plate goes in the centre of the table and you then have a small empty plate for each person. In our small village in Spain the pensioners share three plates (tomatoes, main course and bread) between 8 of them. But I agree that is expensive, bread is normally free and I would expect a large plate to be 14 euro and the smaller plates 3-4 euros

Jajajs ningun español come este menú. 😊 Primero un plato de lentejas, verduras o sopa o pasta. Segundo depende del primer plato . Con la verdura o ensalada , carne,pescado o huevos. Con la pasta, depende si son con carne abundante o no . Con sopa, carne, pescado o huevos acompañados con ensalada, patatas o vegetales como alcachofas, berenjenas, pimientos . Y postre dulce o frutas . Stuart , ha roto el plato de patatas fritas , con huevos rotos. Jajaja 😂 no se mezcla ni revuelve , eso es un puré.😂😂😂 Un Abrazo . Pero...no es tipical Spanish.

That is a shocking rip off! Here in Portugal you would get far more with a Prato de dia from 6.50 to 10 euros, including wine, dessert and bigger plates. Not quite as much as a crime against ingredients as your eggs Benedict which had no muffins or ham and we doubt the sauce would have been up to scratch but that is more expensive than London and Paris for undercooked potatoes, old croquettes and eggs, ham and chips. We are going to the best restaurant in Covilha tomorrow - 3 courses with wine and coffee 13 euros each and it is better than one on the Michelin guide. Is Madrid always that expensive?

No, these aren't typical Madrid prices. Those huevos rotos should cost half of what was charged here. The croquetas are also cheaper if you know the spots and stay away from the tourist traps. This meal should've been half the price, i.e. about 15 EUR.
