In this vlog I travel to Cáceres in Extremadura to see if I can get a true Spain experience and I am not let down. This is one of my favourite places in Spain and well worth checking out should you be planning to live in Spain or visit Spain. Walking around its medieval streets is like taking a step back in time. No wonder Game of Thrones chose it as a place to film some of the series.

Talking that in Cáceres only ham and cheese is good is not true. There are many more dishes that exist and that if you do not like it, it is not a question of saying that they are bad. Each region and each city have specialties. Now, if you prefer to eat paella or gazpacho because foreigners like it more, don't comment that only ham and cheese are good in Cáceres.

En definitiva DESCUBRIRLA!!!

If you did not enjoy their gastronomy, you probbably didn't visit the right restaurants, as gastronomy from that region is much appreciated nationwide. There is a town even more magic next to Caceres, located about 50km away, is called Trujillo, it was home to conqueror Francisco Pizarro. It also has a castle from the moors. Recomended for their local gastronomy, arquitecture and history

I liked the video. As a fanatic for everything connected to history, geography, and language I appreciate the information on these aspects. I have seen so many videos (not yours) in which one learns very little about the place visited but you seem to be concerned with a bit of education too. About the urine I imagine that that is due to the young people doing their "botellón" at night and having no place to get rid of their excess liquid. Food seems to consist of a lot of pork but they do have good beef steaks since Extremadura has a lot of beef cattle. Extremadura is one of my favorite areas in Spain (perhaps only the Galician coast calls me back more often). Yes, it is the poorest region of Spain and also the most underpopulated. Having lived in the center of Brazil I can identify with those vast plains with cattle grazing.

Agreed. I visited Caceres Spain in 2016 where they hold the Spanish "Fleadh Ceoil" every year. It's an Irish music festival, the biggest in Spain. Interesting also is that in the Spanish civil war Caceres was a center for the nationalists and has an hotel to commemerate the king of Spain at the time, hotel Alphonso II to which the loyalists has pledged their loyalty. Irish nationalist supporter Gen.Eoin Duffy used the hotel as an office and HQ for his Irish brigade during that time.

Please there is not any relationship between the civil war and the name of that hotel with the name of a really antique king from the century VIII and IX. He wasn't even a king of Spain but king of Asturias. The last name of a king of Spain before the civil war was Alfonso XIII.

I recently witnessed a man, in Cordoba, rinsing the wall with a bottle of water after his dog pissed on it. I was gobsmacked. It seemed like a genuine act from a responsible dog owner. However, I also recently read that a number of cities have passed a law to fine people that don't do this. The civic street cleaning in Spain has to be the best in the world.

Great to see you in Caceres Stuart. Extremadura is well worth visiting but it is best done with a car. Driving in this part of Spain is pure pleasure. Some say, myself included, that the entire region could be a National Park such is the quality of the landscape and wildlife. The historic part of Caceres and Trujillo are great places to visit with plenty of Conquistador history and renaissance architecture but also fine, as you correctly point out, Moorish remains too. Once you get south of Madrid everything becomes very Spanish - lots of Spanish flags and love of country. Work is a problem of course but I would highly recommend visiting Caceres and Extremadura. Many major sights but a lot of hidden gems too. WT

I think the North is jsut as Spanish as the South. Actually, Asturias es España y el resto tierra conquistada. Plus, the most Spaniards are the Basques, double Spaniards, they say, with blood nobility due to their Spanishness. Nah, but seriously, Southern Spain is not any more Spanish than the North, not at all. It's just a bit different.
@welshtoro3256
@welshtoro3256 2 жыл бұрын
@@goodaimshield1115 I hear what you say. Actually, I'm very familiar with the north of Spain. My wife and I have family in Castile, Asturias, Cantabria and Pais Vasco. We were married in Bilbao and know the region extremely well. I also have a home in Andalusia. When I wrote the original comment it was with a general audience in mind. The issue of 'Spanishness' is a complicated affair, too much so to go into it now. Indeed, Spain, as a concept, is becoming more and more problematic to me these days. Certainly the popular international imagery of 'Spain' is far more visible in the South. All across Andalusia you see the national flag hanging from homes which you will never see in Pais Vasco. I don't think this north/south schism is unique to Spain. I see it in Italy as well. Every time I visit places like Getxo I'm aware that the clothing, housing and cultural atmosphere feel closer to northern Italy and Austria than the south of Spain. More mainstream European. In most of the south, especially Andalusia, the world view is encompassingly Spanish. My young adult aged niece and nephew come from Cantabria and are completely regional. A visit to a town or village in Andalusia would be like a foreign holiday for them. Nothing in common. The only thing they share is the language and Spaniards from the north laugh at the Andalusian accent.

the main reasons for not building a high speed rail network are: 1- In the whole of extremadura there are roughly 1 million people. Just the city of Madrid has 3.2 million (6.6 the whole region of madrid), seville 700 thousand, barcelona 1.6 million. so this would make this part of the train system the most expensive. 2- and maybe more important, a HS rail network in Extremadura would only make sense (talking inpassengers) if it connected Madrid with Lisbon, but none of governements want it. This reasons were given to me by a proffesor in university. he's a specialist in rail systems

Portugal pulled out of the Lisbon-Madrid high speed train when the crisis hit. Originally costs would have been shared by Portugal, Spain, and the EU, but without Portugal, it's no longer an EU project either. Spain couldn't afford it on their own. They're still working on connecting Badajoz to Madrid, but it won't be an AVE. Also, keep in mind there's still no AVE connecting Barcelona and Valencia. If it's coming from Spain's pockets, the latter should likely take precedence.
