Great build! I have been doing inlays similar to yours for around 20 years. Here is what has worked for ME. First, apply a liberal amount of CA glue into the cavity you want to fill. Let it soak in for a few seconds, then apply your first sprinkling of the material of your choice. Starting out with straight Superglue serves both to stabilize the cavity/crack from future expansion, and also guards against the likelihood of the inlays of ever popping out. Adding a pre-mix of the substrate and glue to the hole provides uneven adhesion and little penetration for a good bond, in my experience. Believe it or not, besides crushed stone, what has worked best for me is colored sand, available at craft stores and even Dollar Tree! I just drip in CA glue as mentioned earlier, wait a few seconds, then add enough colored sand to fill it about 1/2 way. Then, wet the sand again with CA, and fill the rest of the way with sand. Let it rest for a few minutes, then add another layer of glue on top until saturated. This will give an effect similar to what you see in crushed stone turquoise rings, where the individual grains are easily discernible floating in a clear matrix of Superglue. If you want to go for a more solid looking effect, after adding the second coat of sand to the hole, add sand dust (crushed in a mortar and pestle) or chalk dust to fill in the spaces between the grains. Then, lightly press the dust into the mix with your finger. Apply the final coat of CA, let dry fully, and sand as usual. This technique also works with glitter, and metal shavings. A hardware store, or even the Wal-Mart Automotive department, will gladly give you the brass shavings from the key machine if you bring a bag. Have fun, love the channel. 😉

Nice build! Great idea with the chalk but I think I would use 5 minute epoxy instead of the super glue to give myself a bit more pot time.

how many layers of super glue do you apply?
@sturmslingshotsandshenanigans20 күн бұрын
Usually one heavy one. This one got two because I messed up and had to sand most of the first one off.
