When did hormel buy a walmart brand?
@amanitamuscaria4559
@amanitamuscaria4559 Жыл бұрын
@@duypham76 Walmart's Great Value line is just distribution, not manufacturing. A lot of generic brand foods are made at same manufacturing plants as bigger brands since they're well established and can already produce items in bulk. The quality may or may not be the same though since generic brands can specify cheaper ingredients to use and often need their own recipes since ones like SPAM's may be proprietary.

Spam lover here. If you have sodium issues, Spam offers a Low Sodium 25% less and a Spam Lite that is about 50% less. If price is an issue the Off brands are almost as good but nothing will taste as good as the real Spam to me. I fry Spam with my eggs in the morning and don't salt the eggs. Thanks for the video.

Simmer halved slices in boiling water five minutes, then turn down the heat and cover pot for another five to seven minutes. Transfer slices to a large colander and place colander onto a pot of cold water, and dunk colander up and down. Discard water, and refill pot with cold water and dunk colander with slices some more. Transfer slices to some paper towels to dry. This will remove a LOT of the salt that was used in making the processed meat. Then cook as you wish. One KZbinr does this then combines some low-sodium teriyaki sauce and brown sugar, and fries his "de-salted" Spam or Great Value processed meat with a little of this combo sauce smeared on each piece. Might be something to try.

Think I read somewhere if you slice and boil spam it will remove much of the salt .
@jfrphoto01
@jfrphoto01 Жыл бұрын
Boil for 5 minutes, remove from heat and cover, let stand for 5 more minutes. Place boiled spam in a colander (wire mesh basket type is best) and rinse under cool running water for a few minutes. Drain and let cool and you now have SPAM with most of the salt removed. Note: Don't do this with the Walmart version as it falls apart. This also works for smoked ham (don't slice, boil whole) to remove a lot of the salt used in the ham. Also corned beef can be salty, especially some of the cheaper cuts, and this works well to remove the excess salt, again, don't slice, boil whole.

They are all made by a name brand, though. So yeah some of them are real home runs and really good, others not so much. But I recommend you try them more because most of the time they are the same as name brand. The only thing they aren't really good for is meats and bread. But in this case their luncheon meat is pretty good. Another comment says it's made by Hormel, which is true because I worked at Walmart and can confirm that name brands make the Great Value stuff.

A long time ago I decided that I liked the Walmart brand much better. The price is a big factor but to me it tastes less salty. I usually eat it not cooked at all.. If I do cook that I cut it up in smaller pieces and put it in stir fry with a whole bunch of vegetables and things but I put it in last so as to not cook it a lot. Cooking takes out some of the moisture so it condenses the salty flavor which I don't like. I like your video very much by the way! Good job!

I could not eat either one due to how salty they are. Spam is salty and WM brand has 200mg more of salt. If you slice it and boil it for 5 minutes then it will remove enough salt to make it palatable.

I can't stand it any way, except added to baked beans. But everyone I know who also hates spam can eat it with baked beans as well, so that's my tip for both brands...keep some on hand, and baked beans.

Walmart slice was thicker. It also has more meat protein and less fat. SPAM is crispier because it is gad more fat and shrunk. Fat makes for crispier crust

I like WallyWorld luncheon meat best because it has more texture to it, and I could taste salt as much in the luncheon meat. But I am not a SPAM prude, love them both.

I slice the spam then put in boiling water for about 7 mins . Let sit covered 5 more. Then rinse well, slice in half and fry in pan with sauce of your choice. Takes ALOT of salt & nitrates out,

Try par boiling it at a low temperature or soaking it overnight to get some of the salt out of it.

Just saw another video showing spam slices being boiled for several minutes letting it cool then rinsing the spam and frying it. Removes much of the salt and retains majority of flavor.

@@carlosmontoya7021 I may try it. We are all salt "sensitive". I can barely eat chips. 😫 Salt is good "to taste". Too much is yuck! Lol

Spam cooks better and leaves a golden brown crust because of the potato starch.
