You just reminded of when most clubs played The Last Dance by Donna Summer back around that same era. But it lasted for a lot longer than 5 years. It's a good song, but it was so cheesy after a while. It was great when techno and grunge moved in and kicked a lot of cheese music to the curb. We need another one of those right about now..

Any true music lover or even a novice should have no problem clicking around youtube looking for the original. Even the algorithm does it for you. It's right in front of you. Just click it. Actually, that's only for somebody sitting in front of a real computer and monitor. Now everyones got a little cellphone that is booby trapped with ads and downloadable apps with touch screens that doesn't even work all the time. You will rear-end the car in front of you before you can find what you want. Anyways, the "passive" music fan youths of today are only receiving good music through little samples + a rattlesnake snare beat performed by a face tattoo.

This song is an actual classic goat song, it was sampled by PM Dawn back in the 90`s and it actually does the original justice. And also the R and B singer Lloyd had a song with Lil wayne back in the mid 2000`s that I can remember sampled this song. I liked all the versions which says a lot about the original.

Trivia Time: The song "True" by the British band Spandau Ballet has been used in films and television shows (and by a lot of people at a lot of weddings) as a romantic love ballad. This is in spite of the fact that its not a love song at all. Or at least, not a traditional one. The song was actually written, in part, as a tribute to Marvin Gaye, who had been recently murdered when Gary Kemp began to write the song. According to Kemp, he wanted to write a song that Marvin Gaye could have written. He describes it as "a song about writing a love song." The band never expected "True" to be a hit, and none of the band members think it was the band's best song ever, as it didn't really fit into the band's typical sound, but the inspiration was there, and they produced it anyway. As of my writing this, "True" is the second-most played song on the radio world-wide, behind "Yesterday" by the Beatles. In the US alone, it has been played on the radio over 5 million times. Given that "True" is 5:17 long, this is the equivalent of playing it continuously for over 50 years.

The album "True" was released in early March of 1983, thirteen months BEFORE Marvin Gaye was murdered in early April of 1984, fifty weeks after the single "True" was released. The 40th anniversary approaches.

P.M. Dawn sampled this in Set Adrift on Memory Bliss. True was released in 1983. Last song on the album True. This song appeared in the movie Sixteen Candles starring Molly Ringwald. Released in 1986. 1982 through 1983. The Police were in The Bahamas. Sting + Stewart Copeland were constantly arguing + laying temper tantrums. The infighting was so bad that Andy Summers left the house to look for help. Luckily, the late George Martin, producer of The Beatles, was nearby. Andy talked to George. His advice was relayed to Andy. Then, Andy returned. Sting + Stew stopped their bickering for the meantime. Meanwhile, Spandau Ballet was working on their album True on another side of the island! SB was on the rise! 1 year later, Sting met Spandau Ballet at the Band Aid recording session, London, UK. 🇬🇧 Yet, The Police was slowly breaking up. Spandau Ballet broke up in the 1990s. They returned in the early 2000s. Then, they broke up in 2010s. True. Written by Gary Kemp. Keyboardist and guitarist. Gary looks and sounds like South African singer/songwriter Dave Matthews. Gary is older than brother Gary, bass guitar. Steve Norman on sax and percussion. John Keeble on drums. Tony Hadley was the lead singer. He quit a few years ago. The band broke up, again. Jess Bailey was on keyboards. He was only in the studio. True is also the name on the album. It is the last song on the album. In the USA and in Canada, True is the most popular SB song. In Europe, Gold is the most popular SB song. Suggested next song: Highly Strung.

Spandau Ballet were part of this underground club culture genre called "New Romantics", which was a mixture of new wave, glam rock, a little dash of punk, but then topped it all off with a lot of flamboyant fashion and style. A lot of acts who have a very particular unique sound came from the early new romantic scene, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, ABC, Eurythmics, Soft Cell, Bow Wow Wow, and a lot more. This is a new wave/new romantic classic. Often played at weddings, proms, school dances, etc during the '80s and '90s, even now to this day. Huge hit on the radio and MTV. Spandau Ballet were part of the New Romantics (offshoot of new wave), which was a softer, soulful, more romantic side of new wave/post-punk. Bands like them in that sub genre were Duran Duran, Howard Jones, Boy George Culture Club, ABC, Roxy Music, Human League, Joe Jackson, Tears for Fear, Soft Cell etc. Peaked in the '80s, waned off a little during the early '90s. This song has been sampled often over the years by many hip hop artists, PM Dawn (and '80s/'90s arty alternative hip hop group) had the most well know "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" which was also played often at dances, proms, weddings, etc. A huge hit on radio and MTV. New wave has been sampled a lot over the years. Spandau Ballet also had good videos for "To Cut a Long Story Short", "Gold", etc which were more upbeat. They were an '80s group. Lex really loves those saxophone solos. lol. Very typical in the late '70s, '80s and early '90s.

It was a No.1 US Billboard Hot 100 hit for PM Dawn in 1991 as "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" and a Top 10 single as "You" on the US Billboard Hot 100 for R&B artist Lloyd featuring Lil Wayne in 2006. It has also been covered by The Black Eyed Peas, Rui da Silva and Paul Anka and other artists.

Ahh the 80’s “new romantic” era of music. Led to the hair metal era. Both were great! I’m lucky, I got to live it as a teenager. It was a great time in music to be alive. Another song from this band that is worth your time is called “Gold”.

Spandau Ballet was a part of "the New Romantics" of the early-mid 1980s.If you want to explore more of that sound, I'd recommend you do a reaction video (or three) diving into late Roxy Music and/or 80s Bryan Ferry. Songs like "More than This," "Avalon " or really anything off of their "Manifesto," "Flesh and Blood," and "Avalon" albums. "Avalon" in particular is one of rock music's rare perfect albums (not a superfluous note, immaculate musicianship, brilliant engineering). After "Avalon," Roxy Music perfected their potential and broke up. Bryan Ferry's "Boys and Girls" album after "Avalon" was essentially a sequel to "Avalon" (again a near perfect album). Cheers!

This song was played at our school dances late '80 and '90s. Its the slower, romantic, soulful side of new wave music. 🎶 PM Dawn sampled this in the early '90s (also played at school dances), I forgot you are younger than most of us here. Lol. Figured you'd heard it before, still played often on classic hip hop and R&B stations. Also, PM Dawn song was a big hit and their other songs. Other rappers sampled it later on, too. Which you are more familiar with.

This song has such good progression. I didn't grow up listening to this song, but I learned to love it after working in the mall. There were a couple of older ladies in the back that would select the songs for our store and I guess they liked this song because it would play often. It kinda grew on me. Then sometime later I met with some former fellow employees from the store and started to tell them how there was one particular song that became my favourite, but before I could name it, they all exclaimed it was Spandu Ballet's True! I seem to remember us belting out, "I know this much is true!". The song also became special to them as well after hearing it in the mall store. It really is timeless. I bet if you play this around the younger generations they'll love it too. Wouldn't be surprised if it resurges again somehow.

The track is one of the all time classics - that greatness stems from the lead vocal, but most of all from the arrangement. Like so many classic tracks if you sat down with an acoustic guitar and just played it through in a simple fashion you'd have a fairly slight song. But the overall arrangement mitigates the repeat rate of the guitar and vocal riffs by varying them throughout and the emotion which Tony Hadley gets into his lead vocal really sells it and lifts it way up there - the very classy sax solo breaks it up and lifts it still further. Spandau Ballet did some other great songs and this one is so familiar to its generation that it's hard to say, but I tend to the opinion that this was their best.

"I wonder how many people had their first kiss to this song?" Great comment by Lex, and I can't answer that, but I CAN say that it got played at a LOT of weddings, including my cousin's. I probably knew 3 different couples who said this was "their song", and I don't exactly have a wide circle of friends. lol

For some reason this is the only song that people react to from Spandau Ballet, but they have so many great tracks ( that were hits in the UK ). Well worth looking through the comments as I am sure people will have listed quite a few. I would put forth "GOLD" as a suggestion -- another of their biggest from the UK charts/scene.
