Spanish Accents in the United States Broken Down by a Latino. Miami, Nuyoricans and Chicanos

So today we are going to take a trip and listen to Spanish in the US. We are going to listen to different American Spanish accents. First we are going to explore the Miami accent, spoken mainly by Cuban Americans, the accent is characterized by a high rate of Spanglish and lots of tumbao (AKA rhythm). Then we are going to continue our trip of Spanish United States to hear the New York Accent in Spanish. Here we will hear mostly from Nuyoricans. We will explore the eternal dilemma Nuyorican vs. Puerto Rican. We will see that there is a clear influence of English in Spanish in the US. Last but not least we are going to move to the South West to hear the Spanish accent in California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. Mexican American or Chicanos also have a very particular way of speaking. Of course, I will have a special bonus where we will listen to Michigan Spanish. Alright everybody! a Fun fact! Which one do you think is the 2nd country with most Spanish speakers in the world?
Think about it for a second (look at phone)
Well, the correct answer is the United States…. Wait say whaaat?
Yes mind blowing isn’t it? Well today we are going to have a big challenge (laugh)
We are going to explore if you find yourself in different parts of the United States which accents would you hear? Most likely… Obviously there are many kinds of Spanish speakers in the US, but this is a general view. This is part of our series of Spanish accents broken down…

We are going to get started to the first place I visited in the US…. Miami. Bienvenido a Miami
Alright so the times I have been in Miami, I have gone all day without using a word of English, and I was fine. I met people from Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Spain…
But the great majority were from Cuba. Oh and I love it because their accent is cool and contagious. Even my Colombian family in Miami speak like Cubans. The Miami Cuban accent has many of the same characteristics of the Cuban accent… The tumbao (Yo tengo tumbao) , dropping a lot of the consonants (oye chico como esta), the use of weird slang (que bola asere), but Cubans in Miami have the special ability is switch back and forth between English and Spanish like 10 times on a sentence…
Oye Come here Mami. Ayudame a fill out estos taxes.
And a lot of the first generation Cuban Americans speak English perfectly but they sometimes sometimes like to say things in English the way Spanish speakers would say it… For example, instead Oye get out of the car… they would say Oye get down from the car… Because that's how we say it in Spanish… Anyways..
Now we are going north of the east coast to New York… If you can make there I’m gonna make it anywhere…
So New York is probably the most cosmopolitan place in the world. SO like in Miami you will find people from Salvador, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador…
But a lot of Spanish speaker in New York are Nuyorican.
So Before talking about Puerto Rico, I must apologize because in my most popular video posted a year ago (Spanish accents broken down by a Spanish speaker), I messed up because I am an idiot… I said the following Puelto Lico.
And I swear in the past 365 days I have had to reply to constant messages saying It is not Puelto LICO… SOOO sorry my friends :)
I have learned my lesson. Puerto Ricans and Nuyoricans sometimes make their R into L but not all the time… They would say Puelto Rico, but never Puelto Lico.
Nuyoricans also have a significant rate of Spaniglish… Notorious for their pero like...
This is my best Nuyorican accent.
Ay Nena, pero like etas hablado como una loca. Capicu
Spanish has also influenced their New York English…. Picture the mixture of people in New york who are often fighting with taxis… Hey Im walking here! And the confident and spicy accent from Puerto Rico… And what you get is people with sas who you don’t mess with? You don’t mess with Nuyoricans.
Now we are going to move to the South West of the US…. And here the biggest influence as you may expect is Mexican influence. It is important to point out that about 60% of Latinos in the US, not only in the South West, identify their origin as Mexican. So you will hear this accent all over the US….
The Mexican accent is characteristically clear, proud and with a musicality of it. It can sometimes be a little bit nasal. No mame guey.
Mexicans transform words in English to Spanish. It’s truly a master ability.
Donde esta la trucka. Vamos a chequear el Estop sign….
Last but not least, we are going to look at the accent from my state Michigan. Let’s listen to it right now……. Yeah there is nothing to listen because who besides me lives in Michigan. Nobody… Who would live in this cold place…

Capicu is when the winning domino can be played on either side. Ex: 2/3. If one side has a 5/2 with the two being open and the other other side has a 1/3 with the three being open, the 2/3 can be played on either side. But it can't happen on a double like 3/3. This is hard to do for beginners but some regular players do know how to manipulate and count the board to get it easy. It's gives you a bonus of points. My mom slams the domino on the domino table and yells it loud when she gets it! 😂

There are quite a few southwestern accents, for example my family in San Antonio sound totally different from me who grew up around Austin and we are only a two hr drive from each other.

The state of New Mexico has some interesting things going on. It often gets divided into a north-south division or sometimes referred to as a Santa Fe/Albuquerque divide. But the southern part of the state speaking the more Southwest accent you describe. But in the north, it's more influenced by the old Spanish spoken by the original Spanish settlers from the 1600s. (for the US, Santa Fe is a really old city) But they've kept some characteristics of how Spanish used to be spoken. Maybe not the best analogy but in English imagine an area with people speaking like William Shakespeare. And in a lot of instances they have different words for the same objects. (luminarias/farolitos) But maybe something that might be of interest for you.

My family are genizaro from nothern NM and souther Colorado. It definitely shows in culture and language the differences. The US is and always will be entwined with Latin America and Spanish speakers. White English speakers aren't the only people who made this country. Those who came before and after both contributed bad and good. America is a bridge symbolizing humanity over a river of self created division.

Nice! Something also typical of Pueltojjiqeños is pronouncing initial R- or RR in the throat, pretty much like how they do it in Portuguese, where "Rio" sounds like "jjiu", with a throaty hh sound. unfortunately Idk how to write this. 😅 Not all Pueltojjiqeños do this, but a lot of them do, and it's quite an easy way to recognize one. ☺️

God bless America 🇺🇸🙏 Hondurans are the newest group of Latinos in the United States, in comparison to other people who settled here like Mexicans, Cubans, Jamaicans, Italians, Irish, etc. Hondurans are one of the newest groups just like how the Haitians and Liberians are the newest groups as well and we even stay at the same regions with significant populations in New York, Florida, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Texas, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, Rhode Island, California, Maryland, Chicago, Seattle, and Georgia. ( Oh and to all of y'all who know about Liberians, remember Liberia was an American colony in west Africa that belonged to the American ACS Society from the United States rather than the federal government, their culture is similar to ours and they talk similar to us Americans because of the American settlers that came to Liberia, and now they are immigrating back to the US where a lot of their American ancestors came from hopefully Convospeak could do a video about this, even though his channel is mainly only about language things, but human cultures are beautiful ) Much love ❤💯

Some Ricans pronounce la Erre Arrastrá when pronouncing Rico (rojo, arroz). It sounds a bit like a J or a somewhat Frenchie R sound. The R sound comes from the back of the mouth, like when you're trying to clear up your throat.

We have a lot of diverse accent mixes, particularly with the Caribbean people here. My friends mum used to switch between Jamaican patois and English without a thought! His nan almost exclusively spoke with patois, very hard to understand but a lovely woman nonetheless!

And in terms of switching “R”and “L”; yes, never in the beginning of any words but in the middle or at the end of words and this is a trend or phenomena that also could be perceived in the entire Latin Caribbean region(DomRep, Cuba and PR)-and it comes from the south of Spain- you could hear it in “el canto jondo (hondo)”, la cultura flamenco, los canarios y andaluces among others Spaniards-Spanish people from the South of Spain.

I lived in NY and have Mexican friends and they sound nothing like some Mexican I met from California. The accent or some words they used. The combining both English and Spanish words is done by most Latinos not just Mexicans. We Puerto Rican use parquear for to park, el rufo for the roof, hangear for hang out and many more. Something good about Latinos of Spanish decent is that we will befriend each other wherever we meet.

Even if the Dominicans have surpassed the Puerto Ricans in numbers NYC. You cannot ignore the fact that the historical legacy of the Hispanic community past present and future in the City will always be based with the New York Puerto Rican community. Music in the city was strongly influenced by the Puerto Rican community ranging from salsa music even up to the seventies they had a role alongside the black community of influencing early modern hip Hop. It's almost a compliment in New York to be mistaken for being Puerto Rican if you're Hispanic. They moved out and spread all over the New York tri-state area. In Miami technically speaking the Colombian Americans surpassed the Cubans in numbers but does that mean that the Colombians now took over the image of City. Of course not everybody assumes you're from Cuba in Miami even the Don Cubans

I will admit that Puerto Ricans had a legacy in NYC in the past, because as a population in the 50's, 60's, and most of the 70's it almost seemed that they were the only latinos there. Since the 70's Dominicans have been quietly making their mark in NYC with a consistent population growth, and Hollywood is taking note of that. It's gotten to the point that most Hispanic owned businesses in the city of New York are owned by Dominicans, and it's been that way since the 90's. Hearing the Dominican accent in most of the cities streets have become extremely common. Legacy past, present, and future?..lol Past you may have an argument there, but certainly not present and future, especially with the large number of Hispanic communities currently present in the city of New York like the Mexicans, Colombians, Ecuadorians...etc You also speak of music... Yes I agree that Puerto Ricans had a small presence with the early stages of Hip Hop..., but let's not let your pride get in the way.. Hip Hop was, and is a creation of the African American community. Let's talk about Salsa... the early days of Salsa was not only Puerto Ricans, there was also Cubans, & Dominicans. Johnny Pacheco (a Dominican) created the Fania Allstarz, and Jerry Massucci was the financier. Salsa was a blend of many different Cuban rythms which is why the name Salsa was given to that genre by none other than "Johnny Pacheco".. the different singers that started with Fania were recruited by Johnny Pacheco. Most (but not all) were Puerto Rican, because that was the majority of latinos that were around him in NYC at the time. He was was also the orchestrater, and musical director of all the bands & singers in the Fania Allstarz. Most of the early salsa's was his handy work from behind the scenes. No, not a Puerto Rican, but a Dominican. You said, "It's almost a compliment in NY to be mistaken for a Puerto Rican." Bro, are you serious? This is where your narcissistic pride spreads it's wings, and gets in the way of your brain with delusional thinking. Nobody see's that as a compliment.. if you think that, you need to get out more, because in most cases it's quite the opposite. You won't see that however, because you are blinded in this prideful Puerto Rican bubble where you can't see anything else, but your own pride. Try visiting the South Bronx bro, because if you haven't, that may certainly knock you down from your high horse. Go to any methadone clinics in the city of NY, and they're mostly filled with Puerto Ricans. Get off your high horse man and open your eyes. You also said that Colombians outnumber Cubans in Miami... bro what are you smoking? There is only 370,000 Colombians in Miami, compared to 1.2 million Cubans.
