this may or may not cross anyone's feed but i've been learning spanish since i was 12 and i'm now 18. the fear of saying things wrong caused me not to say them at all and no practice led to me forgetting everything. a little over 6 months ago i made a friend and he moved from Puerto Rico 5 years ago fluent in English and Spanish and it became obvious how much of a " Gringa " i was. most of the conversations he had on the phone i cant understand and not that id need to but it would be nice to connect with him where he feels safe and at home. and yesterday around 2 am i stumbled across "how to talk Spanish with a Puerto rican" and i decided its never to late or to long to pick it up again and in 24 hours words and phrases are coming back to me like i never stopped. and i hope to surprise him with it next time he comes over. i guess all this is to say don't give up and don't be afraid.

I have always wanted to be fluent en español but never put forth the effort to learn it. I just recently started a new job and the most precious Hispanic girl works in my department (she speaks English and Spanish very well) then another started in my department (she speaks very little English) then her sister started! (Also speaks very little English) all three of them are such sweet people so I am trying my damnest to learn Spanish! Everyday, piecing together their conversations get easier and easier! Plus it’s just a very good skill to have!

I've been doing my self study about Spanish language during this pandemic and I've found out that Tagalog/Filipino(language in the Philippines) has a lot in common with Spanish words. Likewise, it kinda easier for me to pronounce the words specially those with R. This can be a good sign that I'd be able to learn the language.

So does Ukrainian! Not in terms of the sounds / syllable combinations (radically different), but the actual literal translations for things like "what is your name?" being "how are you called?" and things like "how many" being different word combos than English using "how" more widespread (how many, how much, how are you). It's super cool since Ukrainian and Spanish are SUCH different languages. Zero similarity for sound combos and word flow, but tons of overlap with the grammar in literal translations. So in UKR, "how" is "Як" (masculine / neutral) or "Яка" (feminine) (aka "Yak" or "Yaka") , but "how many?" and "how much" are "скільки?" aka "skilky?", but "what is your name?" would be "Як вас звати?" ("Yak vas zvaty?") and "Як тебе звати?" ("Yak tebe zvaty?") which the literal translation of us the same as Spanish with "How are you called?" So "Що" ("shcho") = "what", but "Що вас звати?" would be completely wrong (although not so wrong people have no idea what you're asking haha)

@4:39 is something that I have always thought about and it's good to finally hear it validated. It's important to learn how other languages build their sentences, verses trying to relate everything back to what we know the English meanings to be. That would cause us to structure the sentences wrong. So cool to think about

Salute to you, Coach Rock. Best Spanish teacher on KZbin. This video was really helpful in reinforcing the essentials. 🙌🏽 Can you explain the difference between using Buenos and Buenas when expressing greetings?
@SpeakSpanishFaster4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man salute to you! Buenos is associated with Dias. Because Dias follows masculine patterns. El dia, Los dias. So when you say good morning it's buenos dias. On the contrary, tardes and noches follow feminine patterns. La tarde, la noche. Therefore Buenas is used with those words. Buenas tardes, buenas noches. I hope this helps!

Icelandic is my native language and Spanish and Icelandic are qyite similar in many aspects. In both languages almost every letter in the word is pronounced, it was easy for me to remeber that h is silent and j is pronounced like an h. We have a letter "þ" it sounds like "th" in English, in spanish the z is pronounced like that letter in Spanish spoken in Spain. I love Spanish, why it is not called the language of love is beonf me because it is such a beautiful language. I tried to learn Spanish last semester at college, I had a horrible teacher, she didn't help with anything and we had to translate the whole damn textbook ourselves. In Spansih the same words can mean diffrent things depending on the context of the sentences. This teacher didn't allow us to use anything to help us with, yet it is a remote learning class and she told me I was basically teaching myself because of that yet we couldn't use AI, translate or anything else to help us. I won't give up, there is a new teacher teaching this class now which leads me here. I will use everyrhing I can to master Spanish because I am going to learn it.

The kreeping unit, ¿qué estas haciendo? Means, What are you doing?. And ¿qué tu hace? Is a very informal way to say the same, but is better if you use that with friends and not with an strange. (Sorry for my english). And for example in my country we don't use it and use ¿qué haces vos? (We pronounce "vo" and not "vos" in this case, and is very very informal) and that expresion is use to say What are you doing? And How are you? But it is also very informal.

@@Agustina-jc6soyeah as a Spanish person, "¿Qué tu hace?" sounds like Dominican Spanish or something like that

Tbh, I’m here because I work at a grocery store. So many times now I’ve had an individual who speaks Spanish come needing help and using their phone to do so, I’d kinda like to make communication easier for them.

For anyone wondering, people in mexico and Guatemala who dont speak english LOVE people who put the effort in to learn their language. They will make fun of you. Its just their culture, very dry and sarcastic senses of humor. Great people. Learn the culture too. I find that even more interesting

This is super helpful, thank you! I notice there is a lot of similarities in the literal translation quite a few phrases in both Spanish and Ukrainian, which I thought was super cool! (ie. "what is your name" = "how are you called" ["Як вас звати?" / "Як тебе звати?" aka "Yak vas svaty?" / "Yak tebe svaty?"] I'm excited to see what other similarities there are! I didn't expect it since Slavic / Cyrillic language is exceptionally difficult for native English speakers due to how different the language is in its approach to grammar, so I'm wondering if my learning Ukrainian will make Spanish even easier to learn. Spanish isn't nearly as difficult to actually produce the sounds in a string (phrase / sentence) for me as Ukrainian is because the sound / syllable combinations seem to be much more compatable with a native English tongue, whereas with Ukrainian sounds / syllables are VERY difficult because they are an absolute departure from a sort of syllable or sound flow that the English tongue isn't physically used to. Like I basically have to practice what amounts to tongue-twister phrases not unlike what we used to do for vocal warm-ups on Choir to help train my diction and repeat sound combinations that are super difficult until my tongue becomes familiar with the transition between one syllable to the next. It's been really fun learning such a difficult language and I'm still very new to it, but I'm going to be in the Yucatan for fall / winter and have never been to Mexico before, so I wanted to try to learn some basics and I was worried that my brain would overload trying to learn two completely different languages at once. So far there's a surpsing number of similarities between the two, so it might be easier than I thought! Do you know of any vocal exercises that are good for English speakers to use to help with what might be some of the more difficult syllable combinations we might struggle with?

Muchas Gracias Amigo! Your comparison of learning our native language as a child was really good and it is helpful to use the 'child' method to learn new things. I will check out your course as well, thanks again!
