In December 2022, a team of archaeologists from the SC State Park Service, SCDNR-Heritage Trust, and the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) conducted excavations at the location of Spanish Mount Point shell mound on Edisto Beach State Park. The purpose of the work was to mitigate the effects of storm damage and ongoing erosion to the site. One of the project goals sought to better understand the formation processes and use of the mound through systematic investigations in the area surrounding the mound. This video was produced as part of the project and highlights some of the new findings.
The work was funded through the Emergency Supplemental Preservation Fund, administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior and the SC Department of Archives and History.
