I'm surprised you didn't talk about la Nueve in more depth. That company was made up of Spanish communists, anarchists and republicans who were refugees in Algeria. They joined the 2nd Armoured Division under Leclerc and took part in Operation Torch and later in the Normandy campaign. They were also the first allied unit to enter Paris in 1944, and when the city was secured they entered the Spanish embassy and changed the Francoist flag with the tricolor Republican.
@AnEnemy1003 жыл бұрын
Yes this. La Nueve liberated the Paris Hotel de Ville and then steamed off to Hitler’s Eagles Nest hoping to settle some scores. An opportunity was also missed to mention that many Spanish Republicans were sent specifically to Mauthausen and Ravensbruck while Franco also had a concentration camp system were those sent back to Spain found themselves if not immediately executed. Spanish Republicans also formed the backbone of the “French”resistance in much of the south of France up until liberation.

It would be amazing if we could get a special on La Nueve. It's a great story. They were even armed with american equipment and spearheaded the liberation of France. They opened the parade after the liberation of Paris, with half-tracks named after Spanish civil war battles - working around The French not allowing them to display anarchist and communist names. A sad story, as they believed the allies would help liberate Spain from fascism after the war.

Never, never, never, whatever happens."
@nicholasconder47034 жыл бұрын
Hitler would probably not have turned on Italy per se. He was, however, starting to get really annoyed by Mussolini and the Italian military. We get loads of awesome questions each day, and if you want to post yours please do it at: community.timeghost.tv/c/Out-of-the-Foxholes-Qs. That way it’s easier for us to keep track of all the questions! Cheers, Rune RULES OF CONDUCT STAY CIVIL AND POLITE we will delete any comments with personal insults, or attacks. AVOID PARTISAN POLITICS AS FAR AS YOU CAN we reserve the right to cut off vitriolic debates. HATE SPEECH IN ANY DIRECTION will lead to a ban. RACISM, XENOPHOBIA, OR SLAMMING OF MINORITIES will lead to an immediate ban. PARTISAN REVISIONISM, ESPECIALLY HOLOCAUST AND HOLODOMOR DENIAL will lead to an immediate ban. THE PROMOTION OF EXTREME, VIOLENT IDEOLOGIES IS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN This includes the justification, or promotion of ideologies, regimes, and systems that have historically or are inherently contrary to the principles of democracy and human rights. To be clear some of these ideologies are Naziism, Fascism, Colonialism, Imperialism, Leninism, Stalinism, Revolutionary Socialism, Integral Nationalism and any other ideology that promotes authoritarianism, and a disregard for inalienable individual rights as outlined in the UDHR. Regimes that fall under this rule are for example: Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, the British Empire, Colonial France, pre-emancipation USA, Imperial Japan, Communist China, the USSR and any similar systems and regimes. While an academic discussion of these ideologies and regimes is permitted, even desired, any value statements or comparative posts to extoll their positive sides will be deleted, and may lead to a ban. . Here’s why: It is objectively true that the authoritarian regimes we cover in our series, be they far-left or far-right, were willing to use systematic oppression, violence, and murder to create or maintain their preferred system of governance. From the perspective of human rights, democracy, and plain decency, this is clearly unacceptable. Now, that is, of course, a morally absolute statement based on 21st-century morals and ethics. Therefore, in our content, we refrain from any such judgement and just tell the story as it is. We’re concerned only with the past. We don’t take sides, and we don’t decide which side deserves more blame than the other. Our comment section, however, is not taking place in the past. Our comments are made in the present-day, and political comments such as the ones we don’t allow are promoting a present-day agenda by whitewashing, diminishing, or even justifying the crimes of a past regime. We will not allow for such rhetoric in the same way most democratic European countries (where we create this content) won’t allow for such rhetoric. As historians, our very work depends on this so that we can continue interrogating the past free from political influence.

Most likely Europe would have been divided into two circles of interest (or whatever) between Nazi-Germany and Fascist-Italy with line going somewhere in Alps. Mediterranean Europe (including Balkans) heading towards Africa would be Italian turf and Northern Europe heading towards USSR would be German turf. France would still belong to German turf despite having Mediterranean coast and that area would cause constant bickering between those two. There would also be differences with ideology as well and Mussolini strangely enough being more pragmatic in his politics regarding minorities. Hardline-nazis would of course be very angry about it.

@tombarroso76544 жыл бұрын
@Rafael Resende- Rafael, My father never spoke of their political affiliation, but not all Republicans were Communists. They were probably Europeans with liberal leanings and probably anti-Catholic. I would think they definitely had more left of center leanings. The reason I do not think they were hard line Communists, first, because the Red Scare was in full bloom and they were all employees of the US military. This may have caused some discomfort to American service command. The Spanish Civil War has always fascinated me and I think it was more politically complicated. I remember a Spaniard extolling the virtues of Franco's dictatorship by telling me in his day you could leave your wallet on the street and no one would take it. I always thought that was BS, because the Guardia Civil would have stolen it and living though a brutal regime is not a good way to keep your wallet safe on the street.
@igorokinamujika20734 жыл бұрын
@@tombarroso7654 I would say that portraying the republicans as communist, is an oversimplification greatly supported by the francoist regime for propaganda purposes. The Popular Front wasn't an actual party but a left wing coalition. As such, most of its members weren't communist. in fact, during the war, despite the effect the USSR aid had on pro communist sentiments, the government stood firmly in the hands of PSOE, a moderate left wing party which still exist and is the current ruling party in Spain. In the Basque Country (or at least the republican side of it), the "all republicans are communist" thing is even less grounded, as there, the ruling party was actually the right wing-catholic EAJ (which, like the PSOE, still exists and is currently the leading party of the basque autonomous government).

When Italy entered the war on Germany's side, Churchill commented "That's only fair. We had to have them on our side last time". He proved to be right - in both world wars Italy ended up more a burden than help for their allies.

Very funny. except that Italian army in WW1 was the only army that actually ended the war on the enemy lands; whereas the Germans where still firmly in control of France and Belgian territories. The allied help in WW1 .. muhahahaha

I read that the Nazis even planned a section of the Ordnungspolizei (Nazi German police force) called the Kolonialpolizei (Colonial Police), based off of the Italian Africa Police, which was intended for use in a future Nazi German Colony, the force was formed from volunteers from other Ordnungspolizei units (mostly the Schutzepolizei and the Gendarmerie), and these were trained for colonial policing.The project was abandoned in 1943.

Make a video about 'New Swabia' or 'Neuschwabenland'. I bet most of your followers have absolutely no idea about this. Plus, they don't teach it in schools... So, no chance of learning about this. And it is a really interesting topic.

There's a mediocre Netflix movie about Francesc Boix, a imprisoned Catalan republican who photographed the atrocities of Mauthausen and managed to smuggle them out. I think he deserves a bio by you guys! Your 10min bio videos are better than Netflix' 1h30 garbage😉

It's interesting to consider how much effect Mussolini's view of Hitler probably had on the German-Italian relations. One wonders if the two nations would have cooperated to a much higher degree in a similar vein to the allies.

In regards to Africa, I wonder if Goering had any had any specific involvement in those plans. His dad was responsible for the genocide in SW Africa, to include use of camps based on the British model for the Boers earlier.

Regarding how Hitler would deal with Italy after a potential victory we cannot say for certain but according to Hitler's Beneficaries by Götz Aly the allied nations were treated almost as bad as the nations conqoured.

An unknown chapter in the plight of Spanish Republicans in France was played by the Mexican Consul to Vichy France, Gilberto Bosques Saldívar, who took the initiative to rescue tens of thousands of Jews and Spanish Republicans by providing them with Visas to Mexico and getting them out of Europe. Many ended up settling in Mexico.
