He is on the beach, but we *usually* say he is at the beach.

Yaaaa see? This is so confusing! Thanks!!
@RIanCold3 жыл бұрын
@@spanishafterhours "on" as a preposition of place usually refers to something that has 2 dimensions not 3. You sunbathe "on" the beach, the boat is "on" the sea (the surface), the fish are "in" the sea. If you say "at" the beach you are referring to the general area of the beach but you could be tomando una cerveza en una terraza
@RIanCold3 жыл бұрын
@@johnremargayla5131 I was referring to Laura's example: esta en la playa and she said it would be "She is *in* the beach" which is incorrect. I only wanted to show the difference between "in" and "on", in the same way we sit *on* a chair not *in* or *at* a chair. My American friends agree that if we want to specify where a person is we would say *on* the beach/chair and if we say *at* the beach we mean NOT in the park or the mountains. La gracia de aprender idiomas és que hay tantas variaciones de expresiones y maneras de ver la vida. Entonces por una está *en la playa*, otra *a la playa* Pero bueno, lo más important és que podamos mejorar nuestro nivel de español mientras disfrutamos de la encantadora Laura @Spanish After Hours

Some people I know say, im in the train, I tell them its on the train, they come back with, but we're inside, maybe...but even if there wasn't a roof, you're still riding ON it. No doubt im going to be making the same mistakes learning Spanish.
@STF75373 жыл бұрын
In English 'the beach' means the sand itself. So if you say someone is 'on the beach' it means they are standing on the sand. If you say they're 'at the beach' it means they're in the general area of the sand and may be on the sand, or on the boardwalk, or even in the parking lot. If you say they are 'in the beach' it means under the sand. To us, 'in the beach' means 'within the sand.' In this instance 'in' has a similar meaning to 'surrounded by.' Hope that helps.
@azuriu2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a native English speaker but if you can replace "in" with "inside", it's "in", if not, it's "on". So "she's in the hotel" or "she's on the hotel's roof" :) In any case, these are great videos!😊
@derekschultz78072 жыл бұрын
"In the beach" really just sounds like nonsense to me. I wouldn't assume someone was under the sand if you said that, I'd definitely be asking for clarification. "On the beach" sounds less weird, but I can't really imagine using that either.

Hi. I've only just discovered your channel so I'm slowly working my way through each episode. Fantastic. I love your approach......informative and fun. Learning a new language can be quite tedious but you make it pleasurable !!! The boy is ON the beach but the book is IN the sand.

@rogerdavies27963 жыл бұрын
@@spanishafterhours I can understand how difficult it is to differentiate between "in" and "on" and it can be quite confusing as there are always exceptions to any "rule". Because the book is partially buried i would suggest it is "in" not "on". "In" is perhaps similar to "dentro" in that it is "inside". "On" is similar to "sobre" For example....in the house, in the car, on the roof, on the seat etc But as mentioned earlier....there are exceptions. English is a much harder language to learn (apart from verb conjugations...lol) as there are no rules...unlike Spanish. My favourite example......tomb, bomb, comb are pronounced differently even though the only difference is the first letter . Very bizarre ! Your English is fantastic anyway...as is your personality. You are doing a fantastic job and you make it so much easier for a 68 year-old like me who finds it difficult to learn new things....or as we say in England.....it's difficult to teach an old dog new tricks. I moved to Valencia a few years ago and absolutely love the culture, food, the weather (obviously !!!)....basically everything. Cuidate.
@spanishafterhours3 жыл бұрын
Nice!! I see! Because I usually just translate on/in to 'en', but with sobre and dentro I guess it's kind of easier to understand! Thanks for your kind words!! I'm glad I'm able to teach someone with way more life experience than me something new!! :)) I definitely still have to learn a lot of tricks about life!!

@@spanishafterhours the book could be on the sand too, depends on which context you are saying, like if I was stood a far distance away I might say, there’s a book on the sand over there. But if I moved closer then I might say there is a book in the sand

Thank you so much for this video and all your other ones 💜 you are so helpful! "On the beach" is the correct choice, but it is a weird phrase in English (why must English have so many exceptions to its rules 😭). It is unusual because usually, a person's location within a generic/unspecific area is "in" or "at". In fact, "at the beach" is used more often than "on the beach". Hope this helps!

it's usually "at" the beach, to indicate a general location. but saying he is on the beach, it is to say a more specific area of the beach. so it would be something like "he is on crystal beach". the 'on' is for a specific beach. "at" could mean he's doing ANYTHING at any beach. it requires less details

in the sand at the beach , on the sand at the beach , on the beach , at the beach , but I think that "in the beach" would be rare and maybe literary or scientific usage--Languages get pretty iffy at the outliers. In French there is a book called "Le Bon Usage" , which kind of blows you away at the many unusual ways you can bend French Grammar Rules

He is on the beach sitting in the sand. Creo que en este caso, “la playa”, como ejemplo, es la excepción donde decimos, “on”, en vez de, “in”. Por ejemplo si un hombre fue a las montañas, diríamos que, “he is in the mountains”. No decimos, “on”, como en el caso de la playa. Pero si estamos hablando de la arena específicamente, pues, entonces, “in”. Por ejemplo, el hombre está sentado, “in”, la arena. Me encanto tu boca. Es muy animada. Imagino para un estudiante de español, te puede seguir fácilmente porque tu boca misma parece forma de entendimiento…si esto tuviera sentido. No sé. Pero te entiendo mejor por causa de tu boca.

The correct one is at the beach if you say, for example, we are at the beach. You can say in town, in the country, in the city, but at the beach. To make it really confusing, and that's English, you could say I saw him on the beach. One thing that is clear is that you would never say in the beach. In the water, in the ocean, but on the beach (the surface) while at the beach (the location).
