Mate, this looks amazing. Just starting my E30 316i 1991 restoration and the hand break is completely stuck as it misses the button on the lever, inside the car. What is the black paint that you used for rust, under the car, please?
@SPANNERRASH8 ай бұрын
Hope the vid helps you in sorting the handbrake out. Which black paint do you mean, the stuff I used to do the subframe and heat shields etc? It's a 2k black paint done with a spray gun. I'd recommend something like POR15 if you haven't got access to that stuff.

had a go at this one today, my god is it a ballache with everything behind the hub! Glad you put your brake shoes on the same was as I did - as the E30zone wiki says to do the other way, but it might be a typo as this way with the large gap at the top on the adjuster looks to be less likely to fall out of place!
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Ahh yes I vaguely remember being puzzled by the guide before throwing it out the window and figuring it out myself. I might shoot them a message and see if they'll correct it. Hand brake is super fiddly even with the right instructions, hope you got it all sorted in the end. 😃

@@SPANNERRASH I had to give up due to lack of light (and lack of outside temperature). but I'll crack back on with it when I get a spare day - speaking of BMW handbrakes, just picked up a E46 330d touring, and it's handbrake is also garbage :P

Hi. I'm working on a Z3- same handbrake. With handbrake on, and holding well, I can roll/drive the car backward and forward by a foot or so. Say if I put the handbrake on at an up-hill junction the car will roll back a touch 'til the brake takes effect. It's as though the shoes grip the drum but the whole shoe assembly can rotate a little. I've been told 'they all do that' but it seems a wrong-'un to me. I've just got it apart to investigate tomorrow. Did yours, with lovely new parts adjusted well, do this too?
@SPANNERRASH7 ай бұрын
Interesting! Honestly, not much at all, no more than in any other car with this type of hand brake. I wouldn't say a foot, but a few inches maybe for the handbrake to really grip. It's possible that the locating twist screws that go into the shield aren't held properly on yours. In my vid I used Lockheed Washers to improve this to make the handbrake less sloppy. Hope that helps!

When you replace the rear backing plates, you have to remove that little bracket that the handbrake cable goes through. I took the bolts out, but it doesn't seem to want to budge. Do I just hammer it off? Pull it?
@SPANNERRASH11 ай бұрын
If I recall, it's like a dowel into the rear arm. I would recommend getting some WD40 to soak into it and maybe using something to heat it up. Then a couple of back and forth taps with a hammer should get it moving.
@ExileElf11 ай бұрын
@@SPANNERRASH Great. Got it off, appreciate that. It was a short sleeve so yeh just wiggling and tapping it gently got it out after some time. Soaked in vinegar overnight and it was good as new.

My rear right wheel is getting hot when driving. Its definitely the shoes rubbing on the drum. The cable seens to get slightly stuck where it enters the hub any ideas??
@SPANNERRASH7 ай бұрын
Not uncommon for the friction material to come away from the drum brake shoes and end up rubbing inside the drum so I would investigate that possibility. I think it will become obvious to you when you remove the disc for a look. Otherwise, you might just need to adjust it through one of the hub holes like I showed. Sounds more likely to be the former though. Hope it's nothing major!
@Spider897646 ай бұрын
😢Could you make a video on how to adjust the handbrake. please
@SPANNERRASH6 ай бұрын
Hi mate, it should be covered in this vid dial the winder inside the drum and then adjust at the handle. Worked a treat, although apparently the brake shoe spring should be the other way around to how I did it, so it helps lock the winder. Adjusting it might be harder that way though.

tips on filming if you are using a phone touch once then hold to focus lock so it wouldn't do these random out of foucs shots and if its a camera use manual foucs
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Cheers for the pointers on that, we're using a Sony camera for most of the shots, and most of the time we can leave it on autofocus and it generally does a good job. But sometimes it gets it wrong and we fail to notice at the time. Of course, it was way too late to reshoot it by the time we spotted it this time, so please forgive that, we're learning as we go. 😅

The angled spring may be in the wrong position. I had to place mine on top so it would catch the teeth in the manual adjuster. This kept is from coming loose after using it long term.

so what was the problem that car wasn`t start???
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
I'd had the fuel tank off and the whole fuel system dry previously so it took some cranking to get the car to fire up. I thought the pump wasn't working because I couldn't hear it when I switched the ignition on but it turns out the E30 fuel pump goes on the crank so it doesn't prime on the key like newer cars do. No big deal in the end 😁

I know it’s been months but none of my abs sensors fit properly when I did my five lug swap anyone got any ideas I hear pre facelift e36 sensors work just fine
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Hmmm that's a conundrum, I guess I was lucky that my E30 has no ABS so its simplified. Your E30 sensors should still be in place for the rear though, right? For the fronts, using E36 sensors that fit in the new front knuckle sounds like it would work, but maybe someone who has experience with making the ABS work will chime in and share their experience. 🤞
