G'day Lance, The marks on the flywheel are used for your timing light mate. You can remove the starter motor and hand crank the engine to start it, then set your timing with a timing light. bloody ingenious.

Injoy everything u do.....I need to put new rings on.....do u have video of going through the oil pan....an what I need to do....first time.....I dont have a motor stand or a garage it's sitting beside my building....just had head job...but getting oil in the pistons....coming out the plug holes....what would the back yard mechanic do to a 1951 to30

The pistons need to come out the top but almost all of it is covered in the TEA20 playlist.

The vernier increments on the flywheel will allow you to check valve timing but also initial ignition timing should be a few degrees before top dead center. I set mine up on 5 degrees BTDC. I have never come across an engine where the initial ignition timing is 0 degrees TDC. The other holes in the flywheel may be for checking valve timing or to set the tappets up for being adjusted.

I have never set one to TDC either but if you read the owners manual that is what they suggest. All I can think on is on start up the distributor weights advance it. Another reason could be so it doesnt want to backfire when hand cranking. Thats all I could think of for the TDC.

My TED has four holes in the flywheel all at TDC so the only way I could get TDC on number one without major surgery was to remove the fuel tank and the rocker cover and the spark plugs. Using a probe through number one plug hole I turned the engine in a clockwise direction and waited for the piston to lift the probe, at the probes highest point I checked the valves on number one if the exhaust valve is open then I'm obviously not on compression so I continued to turn the engine until the probe begins to rise again when it reached the top of its lift I again checked the valves on number one and the two valves are rocking, therefore I'm on compression and I'm on TDC number one cylinder.

Another way is to look where the distributor is pointing or turn with your finger on the spark plug hole and feel for when its coming up to compression.

Help I have a te20 and the steering gear box leaks from both sides but I'm uncertain on how to disassemble and what seals I need to fix. The arms coming out of the gearbox do not have the nuts to remove the pitman arms. I'm assuming its all one unit wish you had a video one this style cause I've learned so much from you! Thank you for the videos

I had the same problem. Rather than using oil, I switched to steering box grease which doesn't leak out (www.penriteoil.com.au/assets/pis_pdfs/STEERING%20BOX%20LUBE.pdf). Disassembly looked complicated and you had to machine up your own brass seals.

I'm surprised how accurate top dead center is between the flywheel and the piston. I thought there would be a couple thou deviance either way but them ole boys were deadly accurate with their non CNC machines. I don't know if the flywheel on my TO 20 has those pin positions on it. I'll have to look. I did have to change my flywheel because mine was an early one with the ring gear going on from the clutch side. the book says to scrap it and put on the later one because the ring gear goes on from the engine side. Whats the difference? When the ring gear pops off on the clutch side it makes a lot of shrapnel , looks like somebody took an ax to everything while it was running. If the ring gear pops off on the engine side it will stay between the engine and flywheel and just clang and not hack up everything. As per my email, skin grafts are working well!

The throw of the starter was the difference as far as I know.
