Wasn't aware there was a 78 Roadrunner. I used to think those orange and yellow graphics that found their way into a lot of things from the 70s were cheesy and tacky, but now I appreciate them for being a unique signature from a much different time.

Yep Ford went crazy in 78-79 with those orange and yellow stickers. They put them on Bronkos, Econolines and Pinto wagons. Jeeps had them. Z-28s and Trans Ams had them. AMC even joined in with their Concord/Spirit AMX's

This 1978 Plymouth Road Runner really looks amazing with that black paint and those nice four-tone stripes that run all over the body! The lower front and rear spoilers give it that even more aggressive and sporty look, not to mention the nice addition of the removable split roof. I was surprised to see that the doors and interior seats also had that striking four-tone stripe, perfectly matching the cream and black of the upholstery and console. Lastly, it was a great idea to take a ride with this nice family on those beautiful roads... Congratulations to Angie for sharing her interesting story, including anecdotes, of how she came to own this unique Road Runner from her aunt! Best regards, Lou!

I've lived in PA for all of my 68 years. I live on what we call the North Coast of the US on the lake in Erie. We have everything except a desert. Camping, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing. Yep, we can do that. The forests are so dense in some areas that a deer can be standing in brush a few feet away and you won't see it til it freaks out and runs away. If you ever get up this way I'll be happy to show you around.

The rust problem you're referring to is with the front fenders. To cut costs, Chrysler did not build the '76 and '77's with inner front fender wells. The front fenders rusted off as soon as you put a bag of salted peanuts in the glove box. There was an enormous, costly recall to replace the fenders and add the inner fender wells. The problem was corrected by 1978.
@edb59565 ай бұрын

I remember a local Fireman in town had the twin to this, new in the late '70s, and he was always working on it when he had some free time. It was fitted with Glasspacks, and even had a manual transmission, so he would blip the throttle when he'd leave the firehouse, then ease-off, and as it slowed-down, it sounded like fireworks popping... seems like yesterday!

Yes, 1978 model year with the VIN for the win: H for Plymouth Volare, L for low price class, 29 for two door special coupe, K for 360 CID V8 with four barrel, 8 for 1978 model year, B for Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Hamtramck MI plant was also called "Dodge Main" or "Factory Zero" and today's GM Hamtramck Assembly or "D-Ham" partially sits on the old site. Hard to make it out, but it looks like it was assembled on Wednesday April 26, 1978. Exterior paint is code TX9 Formal Black. Yes, it's missing the "Electronic Spark Control" decal. Those units were pesky and troublesome. It would have been nice to have shown the fender tag.

Doesn't. matter what badge they have. Everyone has their baby. I had a 76 Volare with the duce and a quarter in it. Fun car to cruise on the cheap. They did actually ride very well and they could take turns fairly well.

@loucostabile I'm a subscriber Lou. When I get my TH400 pitch switch completed and installed I might have a 65 GS you'd look at. It's been 28 years of finding the exact parts to bring her back up to the build sheet. But worth every minute. Love your channel, it shows all of car nuts we're not crazy for holding onto our Detroit artwork.

If I couldn't get a 70 Dart 340 or a 1970-74 Cuda or Challenger, I want and Aspen/Volare Road Runner or Super Coupe with the 360. So unique!

So Lou you know I dont comment on the GM and dodge videos as , yes , I am an out spoken hater . I also even disown my own brand of the smog era cars . But Ho Leee , hell...... This one is a Gem of a gem . The car , the story , the familly girl that didnt just see dollar signs... Bravo to the Aunt for taking such good care of the old girl because its an amazing car that you honestly just dont see ANY of out here in the world. By 78 they had made some advancements in many areas that we cannot deny making this car a real joy to drive I bet... I hope it stays in the familly for many generations to come... Thinking that one day that baby there might be prowling around in it makes me happy. Beep Beep.......

I was 18 in 1978, and I remember when those late "Road Runners" came out. Most of the buyers were dyed-in-the-wool Mopar enthusiasts who wouldn't be seen dead in anything but their preferred brand, but let's face it: none of the other manufacturers had much to offer either (definitely not Ford's Mustang II that I ended up with). Gm did have the Firebird Trans Am that you could get with the HO Pontiac 400 with a 4-speed (they had "T/A 6.6" on the shaker scoop, unlike the Oldsmobile sourced "6.6 Litre" decal), and the Camaro could still be had with a 350; both were a shadow of the horsepower that had been available just a few years before, but the big sway bars, 15x8" rims and quick-ratio steering still made for a fun ride that obviously had been R&D'd by an engineering team (unlike the others). Even with all the Mustang II's faults, the front suspension and rack and pinion steering gave a far superior driving experience than much of the competition, even if the 5.0 liter HO was a few more years down the road. I think where Mopar dropped the ball on this was their lack of putting any of the police package goodies that were at least in the pipeline such as "Firm Feel" steering and the wider rims, stiffer torsion bars, hd cooling and the like. At this time though, Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy, and they weren't putting any R&D funding into the Volare/Aspen platform. These weren't bad cars, but what the dealers were wanting to charge price-wise for essentially a tape stripe package turned off a lot of buyers; the Dodge "Little Red Express" trucks sold much better, and they weren't required to have catalytic converters from the factory. . .but now, almost 50 years on, I'm glad someone bucked the trend so we can enjoy this piece of history.

In the mid '80's, down the street from me there was a mint condition Aspen R/T body (same car as this, but a Dodge) mounted on a Blazer frame. The guy never finished it, and I think it all went to the scrapyard. What a waste. Always good to see a survivor.
