Good job. Will order the plugs and get it done. Whilst I do have records of past services, I have no evidence that the plugs have been changed. Your video helps enormously.

A couple of interesting spark plug videos, Paul. What's also interesting is how, over decades, we tend to come to different views about such things. Firstly, I love it when I start work on a car and the plugs are under-tightened, providing that they are tight enough not to lose compression, as yours were. Any car built in the last 20 years would soon tell you through its engine management system if the plugs were too loose. Most cars I work on have been to a heavily-muscled garage mechanic previously, or perhaps a poor DIYer, and the plugs are so tight that getting them out is a real pain. I was checking the plugs on a 2017 Jeep at the weekend and, after having to use a breaker bar on the first plug to get it out, I decided to just check a few of the 16 plugs rather than struggle with every one. Give me too loose rather than too tight every time! Secondly, I always use a dab of aluminium anti-seize on the plug threads. Of course, this means that I can't use the factory spec torques but, after all these decades, I don't use a torque wrench for this job anyway. I've worked on too many older cars where the plugs are tight to begin with but then continue to be really tight for the whole of their thread length and the dab of anti-seize stops this. Thirdly, I always use a proper spark plug socket as this holds the plug securely when removing or installing so you don't need to faff out with magnets or fingers as, in both cases, there is a danger or dropping the plug down the tube as you say. And steer clear of socket universal joints if you can for this job. I've seen too many cracked ceramics due to side loading. A proper plug socket guards against this but I find wobble bars are safer than U/Js if a bit of an angle is needed. Keep up the good work. 👍 Richard

Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the videos. Completely agree, its always a relief when they come out! I'm a bit like you, I don't normally use a torque wrench on plugs, I've fitted thousands and I know the "Feel" of the correct tightness. However I thought I'd show the torque wrench in use for the video. I still can't believe they were not leaking compression.

I get a long silicon straw and pop the head of the spark plug in to lower it in and start the threads as well as to grab it out when there is no rubber or magnet on my spark plug socket.

Thanks paul, ordered mine. Have got the service kit coming tomorrow for the pcv valve. The car drove really well today, starts up and idles perfectly. Sport is much more responsive also. I am also thinking of taking the egr off and giving that a clean also, more than likely needs it! thanks for the video update.

Hi Paul from Paul in RSA. Any idea how many kilometers a set of factory original plugs will last? My 09 XKR has only done 38000 klms from new. I have been told that they should be good for about 60,000 ? I use a plug socket with a rubber insert which holds the plug when refitting and helps prevent porcelain breakage. Love the detail you use in your vids. 👏
@life_on_cars
@life_on_cars Жыл бұрын
Yes 60,000 is about as long as you would leave the original ones in 👍

fun little hack that I use with spark plugs is to attach a 10-ish inch (20cm) piece of rubber tubing as a plug holder to drop them into the spark plug hole.

I would never even attempt a plug change before watching your video. Thanks Paul.👍🏻 Last plug change I did was on my 1969 Z-28 when plugs were still visible on a V-8 and cost 1 dollar each year in the states. I did see a similar coin trick like that with a nickel standing upright on the engine case of 900cc Kawasaki in 1974 at the dealer. ???? Do you know what brand of plug came from the factory in my 2007 XK? And are your 20” wheels 2 piece? Thanks again, Jay
@life_on_cars
@life_on_cars Жыл бұрын
Hi Buddy. The wheels are one piece however the bolts are real and can be removed for refurbishment. I believe the Jaguar branded plugs were also made by NGK.

Leaf blowers are good for getting rid of water after washing the car. Stops water spots and means you limit the amount of contact with the paint. Doesn't stop them from being bloody annoying, though! I don't have one by the way!
