I've been sleeping on Changi departure hall before, flying from Bangkok after a business meeting. But my night flight to Jakarta got cancelled, and the only flight available are on the morning at nine. I then choose to sleep on the departure hall, and the gentleman at the information are nice enough to lend me a blanket. It was a nice blanket, purple with "Changi Airport" written on it. Then in the morning I return the blanket to the information desk. But the guy there told me I can keep it if I want to. I still have the blanket until this day, six year have passed and it still provide me warmth... Thank you ❤️

I was waiting for my connecting flight in Changi for 6 hours at 2 AM and I was walking around looking at food and beverages’ prices. I had money but I was not hungry, I was just looking around after all. A Malaysian auntie who was in the stall gave me a cup of hot Milo and bread saying “I understand, it is expensive here in Singapore. Just take.” Strange but such a sweet lady.

Did notice too that baggage unloading is relatively faster @ Changi than the other airports I've been to, though 10min is quite a stretch (usually ~1/2h for me). Then again I remember my mother being incensed when one of our flights' baggage unloading was delayed by a thunderstorm ("How're so unprepared for this? Thunderstorms are common here"), but later realised it can be quite hard to prepare for (the delay is due to lightning risk preventing baggage unloaders from working). But the effect is still rather nasty - thunderstorms can last over an hour here in Singapore, & in the monsoon season (usu Nov-Feb, though it was present in June 2020 too) they can happen almost daily. Imagine the knock-on effect on aircrafts' timetables as a result. Maybe a solution can be devised e.g. portable shelters for baggage unloaders, or automating the process

I remember staying at Changi for a stopover to the Philippines a couple of years ago, I didn't think much staying at an airport...until I got there. Absolutely stunning! The butterfly house, the Koi ponds and gardens...I had more fun in Changi airport than I did on my actual trip because it was so unexpected to have an airport so beautiful! Can't wait to go back and see the waterfalls! Plus there were more Filipino accents in Singapore than I expected too, so it was a good precursor for when I arrived in Manila! Definitely the highlight of my trip, and the people are so friendly and accommodating! Going out of the airport to visit the Gardens by the Bay was a highlight too ❤ Singapore, can't wait to go back! 🇸🇬

There are cases where women from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc are sent to Singapore, Saudi Arabia, etc by giving false promises. They are then forced to become maids, their passport is held by their "owner". They are paid least and are not even allowed to use cell phones or talk to family, or go out for leisure, and other inhumane stuff. There are apps in these places where one can buy such maids.
@Dipdipsnow
@Dipdipsnow 4 жыл бұрын
Many maids remit all their salaries to their families,some spent away their salaries,some got cheated by friends, some insisted on going back to their country just after a month of working when they are still in debt to the maid agency etc... @@sunnydaytodayy I recognize its a shitty situation to be in. if she was scammed into coming into singapore, which by the way is a pretty good scam to fall for, lol. wouldn't she then want to leave such horrid working conditions and return to the safety of her home?? she skipped on an already paid flight and missed another. points to a very clear motive to stay in singapore for whatever reason it may be.

Best airport indeed, we got stuck in the airport cause the airlines didn't show up at the checkin, no staff what so ever, no emails or calls, and passengers within the same flight has started to pile up. Changi staff took notice and approached us to know what was happening. Immediately contacted the airlines, but no answer, after 3 hours of staying with us and nonstop trying to get a hold on the airline company, someone finally picked up the phone and said that the plane never left from the country of origin and the flight was cancelled, no other explanation was given by the airlines. After one more hour, changi staff still trying to work things out with the airlines and manage finally confirmed that we would be rebooked for a next day flight. They tried their best, while the airlines didn't give two shits about us, none of their staff were present, there's no text, no emails, no calls to inform the passengers that the flight was cancelled. Can definitely say they are the best airport, they even gave us blankets, water and food. While the airline company who should've arranged this, could've given us a place to spend 12 hours, something to eat and drink.

@johnchua5328
@johnchua5328 2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenhazeldene7719 Apparently you are not aware of the maid service employment act in Singapore. Every employer of a maid has to ensure the maid has a return trip air ticket to where she came from in the event of termination or end of contract. As to how much money this maid has is none of the employer's business. This maid purposely missed 2 flights and when the airport staff managed to convince her employer to pay for the difference of a new ticket for the maid and you think the employer is trying to keep her wages ? What logic you derived?
@stephenhazeldene7719
@stephenhazeldene7719 2 жыл бұрын
The employer having to provide a return air ticket is one thing, but her having no termination pay or monies owed is another. But you keep on standing up for the employer. Don't worry about the poor exploited woman

@@stephenhazeldene7719 What makes you so sure that she was not pay? Like I say you are not aware of Singapore's employment act that requires employer to fully clear any owing amount to employee that are dismissed. Singapore is not Europe or America where hispanics, mexicans, blacks or Asians are being exploited. In America the 1% rich controls 90% of the wealth in America. Whos being exploited?

Think there's also been some debate/controversy over whether lower-skilled/migrant foreign workers in Singapore have too little bargaining power. In 1 way Singapore's pretty open; with almost 40% of the population being non-citizens. On the other hand over half of that 40% are "work permit" holders (for lower-skilled/migrant foreign workers) who face relatively more onerous regulations e.g. permit to be renewed every 2 years till a max of 18 years, a tax of ~S$300/worker/month, need for health check-ups twice annually, their legal ability to stay in Singapore being dependent on their specific employment (i.e. they can't change jobs without returning to their home country & re-applying), which has been believed to discourage the workers from speaking out against egregious work conditions, for fear of termination which will then lead to their repatriation. I understand the Phillippines (& Indonesia as well, soon) has also asked for maids' placement fees to be paid by their employers instead of by their maids, to help relieve them of their debts, and also as that's been regarded to violate some international workers' rights' conventions (along with the not uncommon practice of employers retaining maids' passports). The reason for that though is that employers want to deter maids from absconding, which would cause financial penalties for the employers under Singapore's immigration laws (a deposit of a few thousand $ has to be put up by the employer to the immigration authorities). Maybe a compromise solution can be found? e.g. splitting the fee between both the maids & their employers
@Tamaki742
@Tamaki742 4 жыл бұрын
@@lzh4950 The splitting up part would have been fine if the workers from Indonesia went through the formal channels, backed from the government. Thing is there are cases where they just went with the dubious ones and that's harder to regulate.

While he was sitting there waiting and looking, a cleaner/janitor lady came up to him and offered him coffee and cake.
