No, the Super Saiyan was a legend passed down from generation to generation. Like the Saiyan equivalent of Hercules or Thor. The last Super Saiyan before Goku lived a thousand years before the story of Dragon Ball began. Hell, for all the Saiyans knew a Super Saiyan was just a very powerful Saiyan and not necessarily a transformation.
