I can't (or rather CAN) believe the 80s overlooked them themselves. While it was the best decade for music, it was always the shitty dahlings of the music press and puerile shit that got the attention (even over the best 80s people), so naturally this happened with the Sparkies.

This was a big hit in Paris, Autumn 1980. i heard it in all the nightclubs. I came home to New York at Christmas time and nobody had ever heard it. I had to put in a special order for the 45 at a hip Greenwich Village record shop. What is the appropriate Biblical line: "A hero is without honor in his own country"?

Swing. "Looks, looks, looks" and I think "Get in the swing" partly is swing, it's a sort of hybrid. Jazzy anyway. Then we have the songs "Gone with the wind", "Here comes Bob" and "It ain't 1918". I'm not sure if Profile can be in that group of "silent movie music", though the others are ragtime (I think..., but played around 1915- -30, I'm not young, but not that old 😂). Yes, they varie their music! 😁 🤩💖

@@pbattis1 that's how it should be. Too many people are so narrow minded, they'll listen to one or two different genres only. Almost any music genre has their gems, they just have to be found. Apart from loving The Sparks and DK, I also enjoy listening to John Coltrane, The Dubliners, Edith Piaf, Beethoven, John Cale, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Johnny Cash, Caberet Voltaire, Public Enemy, The Kinks, Astor Piazzolla etc. If more people would open up to different ideas, cultures and aspects of life, maybe this planet would be a less violent place.

"I never feel like garbage when I'm with you I almost feel normal when I'm with you, with you, with you" There is ALWAYS something little extra, something to awakening our half sleepy brains in Sparks' songs. If you can't find listen again, look up the lyrics. Something pointing at funny or odd things in the world, of being a human. Sometimes you never thought about that little detail before Sparks put words on it. "That's why I wanna spend my life with..." SPARKS! They simply make life so much better! 💖💖💖💖

There were two art rock bands I absolutely adored in this era - Split Enz and Sparks - and as far as I know there were mooted double bills of the two bands playing together but I don't know if it ever happened.

Well, Mister David, I have something to tell you. About eight years ago, my friend introduced me to the Split Enz LP "True Colours' and I instantly responded to "Double Happy" and "Shark Attack" and have since become a huge Split Enz fan. Now zoom to the present... Two days ago, a different friend of mine introduced me to the Sparks' song "Amateur Hour", which I have to say upon first time listen rocked my world like no other song ever has. Zoomed right to the top of favorite songs for me. So I was super excited to talk to my first friend and ask if he was familiar with the group Sparks/song "Amateur Hour" (I'd never heard of this group before.) Not only had my friend heard of them, but turns out that Sparks is his favorite group of all time!!! All these cool instances of being in sync! Woah!! And then I proceeded to tell him the only other song I could think of that came close to equalling the off-the-charts high energy of "Amateur Hour" was the wild off-the-charts high energy of "Shark Attack"!! Reading your post just now put a real big smile on my face and I had to share my recent story and that YOU have greatly contributed to the synchronicity!!! So, so cool!! Thank you!!!

Despite their offbeat appearance, Split Enz were quite conventional music wise. I remember reading that the Enz and The Birthday Party were recording in the same Melbourne studio and when the Enz members heard The Birthday Parties music they commented to the effect of "what are you doing, you'll never be successful sounding like that". Success didn't seem to be foremost in The Birthday Parties mind, and they returned to London after recording to forge their uncompromising careers, firstly with that band and then as Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Oh.... thank heaven for Todd Rundgren![Always the visionary] Discovered and produced the Mael Bros in 69-70. [then known as HALFNELS0N] Since then, a half a century of fantastically fun, cerebrally silly, preciously pure pop-rock music!! Ahead of their time....50 years later !!
