This video was tremendously helpful as I was able to identify the correct replacement part and replace the valve stem in my shower. I saved hundreds of dollars because I didn't have to call the plumber. Although the video said to slide in the new valve stem, it did not sit flush in the notches. I had to push it in with a little bit of force to get the valve stem seated on the side notches. Also, you have to adjust the knob on front counterclockwise for a hotter temperature. The video says to adjust clockwise for hotter.

You said use a 3/32 Allen wrench. I ended up needing a 1/8 size, 3/32 was too small. Also had a heckuva time getting the handle off after loosening the screw. Also had a hard time getting the old valve out. But after that everything went smooth and so far, no more leaking. So hopefully I did it right. Thanks for the aid of your video Sparky Channel.

@Sparky Channel. Thanks Bill for another good repair video. While I remember to apply plumber's grease to the o-rings on replacement cartridges, I didn't think to apply the grease to other parts to keep the water and minerals out. I'll have to remember that. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

Good Video. I have a new shower that after rough in, sat for several months. When I went to put cartridge in, there was a lot of resistance. After getting it in, the shower leaked. Pulled it out and noticed both small o-rings were nicked on the 9/oc and 3/oc position. Cleaned inside out multiple times, and don't see any build up, but still a bear to seat. Still nicking o-rings. Puzzled.

In most cases, replacing the cartridge isn’t necessary, if the faucet is dripping, simply replace the washers inside the cartridge for a few bucks. An original Delta cartridge costs anywhere from about $45-$65, the washers cost $4.50. !

Thanks for the informative video! This may be a dumb question, but I have lived in apartments all of my life and never had to do my own work. ha. So my leak is from the shower head. It drips ,most of the time, but not always. The problem would be at the faucet correct? I just don't want to change the faucet if there is a washer or something at the shower head that may do the trick. The entire bathroom is only a couple of years old. I'll take advice from anyone who knows. Thanks again!

Good info! But mine is the Delta Windmere.....instead of the side hex scrrew, it has a handle screw, that screws right into the cartridge end.....at 1st, the screw was frozen, got it loose with an impact screwdriver, but it only backs out about 1/4", and just keeps spinning.....I can see the cartridge between the handle & spacer.....might try to just Sawzall through the cartridge....but I cannot loosen get the handle off

I don't suppose you have another video on what to do if the handle doesn't come off after unscrewing it. It might be calcium build up because it's been there for over a decade. But my handle looks different than the one in the video and it feels like it's going to break something if I pull too hard or twist it too much.

Hello, great video... my problem... (one of them)... leaky delta, same as in the video... bought an RP19804 because mine is white, not grey... followed the instructions.... replaced the cartridge... installed all parts up to the handle... turned handle to the off position, turned on main water, water flows unrestricted to tub. handle does not turn water off... removed new cartridge, reinstalled old cartridge... water is off but still leaks... do I have a bad replacement or the wrong cartridge?

Is there any gasket in the rough in, my plumber made new placement with new cartridge, it is still leaking, he dig black rubber debris from rough in, we can’t find proper gaskets. The plumber used old white part to be put on the new cartridge, and grey part is new, and then it is not leaking now, just a very little drop at turning off the water, and then no water leaking again.

Do you know why the pipe still leaking if there is not cartridge?

So I have an interesting issue with my delta valve. It seemed to be dripping so I replaced it. The process of getting it out was a bear but I eventually got it out and replaced. The new one seemed to work just fine but this morning there were a few drips of water in the bottom of the shower. It is almost like it will intermittently let some water by. It will be dry all day long and then a few drips come out and then it stops again. Any idea what may cause that? Could it be water hammer from another valve in the house that causes a little water to sneak by?
@SparkyChannel

My guess is that it's just some water left in your shower head.

Yes, I really like PB Blaster. I spray it in there, tap on the metal, spray it again, tap again and then I have a nice set of "T" allen wrenches. Use the correct size or it will strip. Good luck! And use plumber's grease when you screw it in.

Had a plumbing company come out and tell me I needed the whole faucet replaced. Luckily when the actual plumber doing the work came out to do the repair said, "you only need a new cartridge... Not a new faucet." I'm glad the actual laborer was honest. Saved me a lot of money. I wish I saw this video about 2 years ago. Looks easy enough to do myself. @SparkyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren! If you go to 3:20 you can see clearly which way it needs to be turned for colder and which way for hotter. I should have used clockwise as we are looking at the unit rather than clockwise for the actual limiter but if we just look at the colder-hotter arrows everything becomes clear. Thanks!

Excellent video. The original cartridge was so firmly seated that it broke off while attempting to remove it. We tried wiggling the pulling straight out as you demonstrated. Eventually it broke at the middle. I wonder if someone glued it in when they installed it. Is that possible? What tool to try and remove it?
@Ethan.s..

The cartridge can be separated around the middle. It separates when you turn it counterclockwise. You can put it back together by pushing it in and turning it clockwise. If you physically broke the plastic you will need to replace it.

Sparky's video was very helpful, gave me confidence, especially using the 3/32" allen wrench T-handle. I did shut off the water at the beginning of the house, put should have turned off water at the meter. I drained water from shower, pressure from sink cold and hot water. I was inpatient waiting on all water to completely drain from shower, try to install, still had little water psi, but after a few more minutes, tried again, inserted cartridge, little extra push into slots, held in place, patiently hand tightened fine thread nut, cleaned up, turn outside water on, cracked open bathroom fawcets and shower. While getting air out of fawcets. I took apart the cartridge to replace seats and springs RP 4993 received from factory, lubricated the face with vaseline, inserted, pushed turned right to lock back in. Back In Business ! ! ! ! Thank You Mr. Sparky

I installed a new cartridge, but the bathtub faucet drip got worse. I did not use plumber's grease. Could that be the issue? Or does that just make it easier to slide in and out (lubrication)?
@SparkyChannel
@SparkyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Angela, did you clean out the part that the cartridge goes into first? A piece of debris or corrosion can cause a leak. The plumber's grease is more for the next guy who works on the cartridge because it will come out more easily but it can help it slip into place more easily as well.

@@SparkyChannel I didn't do a very good job, apparently. I just took apart and cleaned out the calcium deposits, and I think that may have done the trick! Thank you so much for your video and answer to my question!

is lithium grease not a good option, instead of silicone?
@SparkyChannel
@SparkyChannel 10 ай бұрын
No, because lithium grease is toxic when heated. Stick with the plumber's grease.

I’ve already installed my RP 9804 cartridge because the old one was leaking. I was able to get the old one off and replace the new one and it’s working great. Problem is I forgot to use plumbers grease on the O-rings. Even though it’s working just fine should I Pull everything out and put plumbers grease on it and reinstall or just leave it alone?

Most of the time I’ve had to cut the ring off. You need to make a mark on top before you try to start twisting with channel locks I seen many of these cartridges twisted 30° or more. They’re attached with small copper pipes and I’ve seen some twisted so bad that they restrict the water flow or worse Twisted all the way off. And usually you don’t have to change the cartridge just to cups and springs inside.

Can I put a different cartridge in that pulls out for water pressure and goes left/ right for temp. It runs full power and sometimes its nice to turn down the water pressure to use less.

I've got a brand new Delta valve and cartridge installed (RP46074) but there was a slow leak coming from my shower head. I opened up the valve and cartridge to see if there was any obstructions and found none so I put it all back together and now the leak is worse! Any idea what the issue could be? I believe something inside the cartridge housing such as the piston or the seats/springs got loose. Thoughts?

you may have put it back together wrong. try putting the springs fat side in, then the little cup things cup side out, then put it all back together. also, get plumbers grease, it helps the seal on the o rings. not a plumber, just been wrestling with my shower for a week and ive contacted delta several times for help. hope i can fix someones shower
