A fire in an attic on a Hillside Avenue home sent one firefighter to the hospital after a ceiling caved in on him.
The fire, which was called in around 11 a.m. caused heavy smoke which was visible from the bottom of Central Street, but it was extinguished within 20 minutes.
As firefighters were working in the home, a bedroom ceiling of the affected half of the duplex collapsed on 2 firefighters, burying them in sheetrock and other materials, according to Deputy Fire Chief Mark Nelson. Firefighters who were inside the house when the ceiling collapsed called a mayday and rescued the 2 firefighters from beneath the rubble.
The injured firefighter was helped out by other firefighters while favoring his left side. He was put on a stretcher and taken to Milford Regional Medical Center, Nelson said.
An HVAC company, CPS Heating and Cooling of Marlborough, was working in the attic at the time of the fire, according to a worker who had no further comment.
Nelson could not confirm whether the HVAC work was connected to the fire, saying only that there was "work going on in the attic."

steve b should they not sleep or eat when they work 24-48 hour shifts? Would you rather they not staff the station and add that 4-8 extra minutes to a response? Do you think your tax dollars are wasted on Fire/EMS?

Well Technik Meister. People don’t just become Firefighters for money. People become firefighters because they want to risk their very own lives to save the lives of others. Maybe even yours someday.

@Megabyte A greenstick fracture is more common in children and not a healthy grown man. At the end he kind of grabs his shoulder so I'd guess a dislocated shoulder or possibly a fractured clavicle. The shoulder is the weakest joint in the body.

From my years as an X-ray tech I would say either a dislocated shoulder (most likely) or a broken humurus.

It does not matter if the HVAC did it intentionally, they should have been more careful working in a tight spaces, because they were not a fireman was injured and someone lost there house.

The job is to save life and property. You can hit it from the yard, we’ll go inside whenever possible though.

We not only protect people but property too. No fire fighter is ever going to show up on scene and just sit there and watch someone's home and the totality of their property go up in smoke when we could have done something to stop the fire. There does, however, come a time where we pull out if the danger becomes too great.

"A PASS device (Personal Alert Safety System) also known as a distress signal unit (DSU) or ADSU (Automatic Distress Signal Unit), is a personal safety device used primarily by firefighters entering a hazardous (IDLH) environment such as a burning building. The PASS device sounds a loud (95 decibel)[1] audible alert to notify others in the area that the firefighter is in distress." They automatically activate after not detecting motion for 30 seconds
