"...a pure vanity purchase!" ~ Yes, been there.., done that. Those Spartan blades are Works of Art. Especially if you're a Blade/Knife/Sword Lover like me! I'm looking at their Horkos blade ($330-ish) or the C. REEVE "Pacific" (same cost, about - $320 @ Blade HQ). Dude.., that's a TRULY SWEET BLADE ~ CONGRATS!!

Great life, congrats sir. Expensive but should hold up for a lifetime. They (Spartan) told me I should sharpen mine often with a diamond sharpener. Otherwise its tough to get an edge back because of how strong the metal is. My little Enyo seemed to get a tad dull after some moderate use.

The same argument about quality knives can be made about sunglasses. You buy $200 Oakley's that are very good quality or $10 walmart sunglasses. Do they both shade the sun?? Yes. But it's about the quality and longevity. I'm about to get an Ares soon!! Thanks for the honest opinion!

tehBar0n I can't wait to get my Ares from Spartan Blades! Very much worth the price in my opinion.

8 years later and the price is barely more. Only $445 direct from Spartan. Can be found a little cheaper from dealers, especially any that have something like a military discount. Other knives with similar materials and craftsmanship are around the same price now. There is a very similar one that is less, but there's a 6 year wait from the factory.

I just bought the Spartan ronin Shinto with Keydex I always do the kydex for Spartan 414.00 and I already own the Spartan Horkos. My next glade is going to be the Microtech Combat Troodon otf that knife is soooooo bad asss looking.

Dude, bro you have great taste in knives I want all those you just mentioned and my list of knife wants isn't terribly long.. But anyway which blade do you prefer between the Shinto and the Horkos if you don't mind me asking?

The steel that knife is made of is ridiculously good steel, hence the hefty price tag, you could try for days and not break that knife
@greekveteran27153 жыл бұрын
If S 35 VN is as "tough" steel, as you think it is, then I am Elvis Prisley son. Almost all super stainless steels, are very brittle and the least tough stees out there. Especially at that high hardness of near 60 this knife is. Only well know Super stainless that has some toughness, is the CPM 154. The others, are way far from tough. Tough are the Tool steels family of steels, and then the Carbon steels. Stainlese next and last and least tough, are the Superstainless steels. Even a Ka-Bar, beats this knife in terms of toughness. Also, he is lucky, he didn't lose that tip, with all that stupid stuff he did with that knife.
@anderseckstrand70333 жыл бұрын
@Greek Veteran....... You are correct sir. If you want to go for a steel with more toughness, I personally always gravitate towards S7 (literally referred to as “jackhammer” steel), or 80crv2. Both of those steels are often kept at lower Rockwell hardnesses, because it’s expected that the user will beat the living s*#! out of it, thus edge retention usually takes a backseat as far as metallurgical properties go. A2 and 3V are also pretty tough steels for what they are, but of course as with ALL steels, how well the heat and cryo treatments are applied can literally make or break the difference in a steels performance. 😉 I will say however that S35VN does a decent job of holding an edge (aka edge retention). Spartan Blades must have had a good reason for selecting this steel. They’re well known in the knife world. But unless you actually call them and ask why they went with S35VN, then we’re all just speculating here in the old KZbin comment section. 🤷♂️

@@greekveteran2715 nah, sure its not as soft and malleable as something like 1095 but s35vn is far from "brittle" especially with spartan blades heat treat. Blanket statements about "super steels" is bound to be incorrect and with proper heat treat are far more capable than softer steels. I'd bet money that a well done 3v blade would outperform any 1095 in every single category with ease. I've also carried and beat the hell out of an 20cv which is considered significantly more brittle than s35vn and I've never experienced chipping. Even when using the blade in non conforming ways. Its sheared through thin steel wire with ease and withstood lateral scratching of pvc on dozens of occasions without any kind of failure.

@@greekveteran2715 You literally have no idea what you are talking about.... Crucible Industries CPM S35VN was born in 2009 from a desire to make Crucible’s earlier super steel, CPM S30VN, even better. Crucible set out to increase the toughness and edge retention, while keeping corrosion resistance at a premium. They succeeded. S35VN is 15%20% tougher than S30VN without any loss of wear resistance. This is because they substituted niobium carbides for some of the vanadium carbides. All of this toughness nets a gain in chip resistance as well. The hardness of both the vanadium and the niobium carbides are harder and more effective than chromium carbides in providing wear resistance. The edge retention is also improved over conventional high chromium steels such as D2 and 440C. Because of Crucible’s CPM process, the resulting steel is very uniform and provides exceptional dimensional stability, grindability, and toughness over conventional melting processes. The industrial applications of CPM S35VN are specialty cutlery, feed screws, and dies. The longitudinal toughness is comparable to 420C and 154CM, however, the transverse toughness is five times higher. The resistance to chipping and breaking under side load stresses make this a perfect material for larger blades, such as machete’s and swords. The CATRA test measures wear resistance in relation to 440C, and CPM S35VN comes in at 145% better in that category. Read the last 2 sentences then realize how wrong you are, this steel was made for knives and long blades.....

JoeX would shatter this blade like glass in about a half hour. If he was able do that to the Becker BK2 and the ESEE 5, I’m guessing this wouldn’t hold up much longer.

I mean... you are asking a dude who paid $1800 to have a sword forged that hangs on the wall in my office... so not a good person to ask hahaha If you are just buying this to use as a knife, none of these luxury knives are worth it. You could buy a $60 knife that would do all the "knife" things that this does... beyond that, it is all vanity.

@@t3h8ar0n well whether the profile suggests it to be a "true" fighting blade or not, #1 it was created for an army and #2 the manufacturer spartan blades makes combat knives. And any knife priced over 100 dollars will only be used for its designed intention in my life. I simply won't bang my blade around for everyone to see how durable it is. But that's just me. My knives have a designed job and intent and that is all I will use them for. That's all
