I think yall deeply misread quintus. Quintus warned maximus to be smart, and maximus ignored him. Commodus was the new emperor, if you wanted to supplant him you had to be tactful, feign loyalty like the sister did. When Quintus saw that Maximus' plan was to put on his armor and accuse the new emperor of murder with no evidence , he chose the "smart" decision to remain loyal to the new emperor and follow his orders, as soldiers do. But maximus was still his friend, and he still had no love for Commodus. So in the final fight, when he sees that maximus has the opportunity to kill Commodus, he makes sure Commodus doesn't receive any outside and unfair help. Quintus reminds me a little of varys with ned stark, varys tried his best to help ned, but when he realized ned was determined to make all the wrong choices, he chose not to die alongside him and live to fight another day. I dont think quintus or Varys are "snakes" for that

I don’t think I’ve actually ever heard anyone compare this movie and 300. I think because they’re so cinematically vastly different it’s never even occurred to me. The only obvious comparison I can see is both use a very loose historical basis and very large portions of creative license in crafting a narrative. But 300 isn’t even an original work. It’s quite a faithful adaptation of Millers graphic novel. I like the source material but unlike Sin City I didn’t really think the screen version brought much more to the table. After Commodus took power, sure. But he was clearly part of the army at the start of the movie and was not the Praetorian Prefect. which presumably was his position later in the movie. He may have believed Commodus' version of events, and thus didn't see himself as betraying anyone. Or, he may have been given an ultimatum, like Maximus. Whatever happened, Quintus obviously felt guilt. This is shown in the scene from the extended version of the movie, just before Commodus stabs Maximus. "I'm a soldier. I obey," Quintus told Maximus.

He didnt sell anyone out really. He followed orders and kept to the rules of arm to arm combat in the Gladiator arena. @@887levi probably not, but couldn't he actually be the Praetorian Prefect in the beggining also? Considering the person he's protecting, Marcus Aurelius, is also on the battlefield. During Domitian's time for instance, Fuscus initiated a campaign against Decebalus, which ended in disaster, with the destruction of the Fifth Legion. They had to follow all the same rules of combat, the difference is that IRL they had armor and better weapons (often their opponent had lesser weapons and dull blades) from the start so always had the upper hand. So it's valid to assume he had to abide by the same rules in the movie adaptation as well, one on one combat could not be assisted once it started. A lot of people miss that Quintus was the commander of the Praetorian Guard, who are the Caesar's personal bodyguards, so he wasn't betraying Maximus at the start of the movie. He was merely doing his job following his boss's orders now that Marcus Aurelius had died and Commodus was the new emperor. At the end of the movie when he refuses to help Commodus when he's fighting Maximus at the Colisseum and he orders the Praetorian Guard to not give him a sword, now that's when he actually betrayed his duty, but he did it for the greater good after what he did to Maximus and his family had weighted on him for a while. There's a deleted scene from the Director's Cut where he's shown being conflicted about Commodus and disapproving of his behavior as emperor about two thirds into the movie. Maximus always talks to Quintus with respect, even after ordering his execution and at the end of the movie when he instructs him to release the soldiers and fulfill Marcus Aurelius' wishes, because Maximus understands what the Praetorian Guard is as well as who Quintus is and why he did what he did, and he also understands the importance of seeing Quintus order the guard to not help Commodus at the very end.

Gladiator is a true classic and populated by some top tier legends - the notorious, irrepressible OG bad boy Oliver Reed (who died during the making of the film), Derek Jacobi (who rose to fame in the BBC drama I, Claudius) and of course that other legendary bad boy brit - none other than Dumbledore himself - Richard Harris (disappointed you missed that one!). From the bits and pieces I've seen of 300, it appears to be heavily stylized & action orientated (with no shortage of that trademark Snyder slow-mo). Gladiator - whilst possessing its fair share of action - is first and foremost a drama. Sharing a historical setting doesn't necessarily make them comparable when they're not the same type of movie. A bit like comparing - say - Star Wars with Interstellar.

So…. You love “warrior movies” and you’d never seen The Last Samurai or Gladiator until recently? Both are more famous and higher rated than 300. Gladiator is almost universally considered far, far better than the other two. I also don’t understand Spartan’s issue with “CGI”. There is barely any and it looks much better than modern special effects to me.

@@--------K1NG--------00 Outlaw King is the better and more accurate version of Braveheart. The outfits and armor are very accurate; in the 14th century, Scots wore armor and mail just like the English did, as opposed to wearing kilts and face paint, which was just wrong. As iconic and good as it was as a film, it was painfully inaccurate especially since Braveheart was the name given to King Robert the Bruce, not William Wallace.

in 1999, Oliver Reed who played the character Proximo, died while filming GLADIATOR. Quintus was never actually a bad guy. He was just following the orders he had. Back then if you were killed as a traitor your family died too. Quintus was a general like Maximus, so he was following orders from Caesar and was probably told Maximus was siding with the senators. He had no reason to question the death of the emperor. This is one of my favorites. Very different from the 300 but I consider this the better movie.

No, Quintus didn't betray Maximus. Quintus is part of the Praetorians, whose job is mainly protect the high herarchies. The moment his father died, Commodus took his place and Quintus was forced to follow his orders. He didn't plan anything, it was Commodus. It's rpetty straightforward tbh, don't get how you got to the conclusion that Quintus betrayed Maximus and staged his death and the assasination of his family.

He constantly patronizes Pudgey for her suggestions (even when she's right), then with his full chest, confidently declare facts that are completely incorrect. It's painful to watch their reactions to these historical epics when the guy severely needs to open a book. It's fine to have a differing opinion on tastes, but they make their career on these monetized videos and the guy is an absolute moron. Society is really tanking. Not quite. Taken altogether Millers graphic novel probably has a similar amount of historical basis as the narrative of Gladiator - ie some but very little. There was a Battle of Thermopylae fought in 480 BC between the Persian Empire under Xerxes I and an alliance of Greek city-states led by Sparta under Leonidas. Granted some of the look and feel of Rome, it’s army, city, politics, gladiators etc is a fairly reasonable portrayal, and while Marcus Aurelius was indeed an emperor, apparently stoic in rule in comparison to his son and successor a corrupt Commodus, not his death nor any other events from the movie have any basis in history.

This thing that modern audiences often overlook about battles from a much older time, is that they tended to begin, and end on the same day, because there's no artificial light for ANY of the fighters. It's VERY hands on. There's no pulling of a trigger, then a tiny figure in the distance drops. It's up close and very personal. It's chaos, with everyone around you trying to stay alive. It's a big group of men, gathering to brawl until one of the sides flees the field. Most of the warriors are regular people, farmers, merchants etc pressed into service. Some cultures had professional warriors, whose JOB it is, to fight. It's a vast difference between that, and modern wars, where it's mass remote killing technology, and sides dug in for YEARS.
