For the prop it doesnt matter, air flows still the same way over it.
@4DCResinSmokerАй бұрын
@@TheOneAndOnlySatan Its not the prop but the airflow leading into / out of it. Inverting the motors ensures that the flow from the props providing the lift isn't being blocked by parts of the Quads frame. Furthermore, the motors use centrifugal force to pull air over the stator to self cool. Unfortunately for may Quads, this flow is opposite of the propellers. Inverting the motors, makes sure that the cooling flow is matching the propellers flow. Thus increasing efficiency a small amount, while also improving cooling. Granted for small Quads, ,the effect is negligible, but for a long range flights every little bit counts!

Everyone at the club had questions after. I had to hand the control off to my brother many times. We took turns the entire 90 minutes. I can say flying rc for that length of time is grueling. A Drone may be easier because you can just let it hover in place, but actually flying that long at the controls RC is definitely harder than flying in an airplane. Very cool project. I hope they are successful in their business.

I think the pod-with-battery design is a good place for thought experiments about endurance. Think about having 8 pods instead of 4 pods, and realize that if all pods are equals, endurance should remain the same, 2 hours. But think again that 8 pods only need one set of FPV/action camera, Fc/navigation, LIDA/sensors, and radio, and 8 pods will fly longer by spreading thin the basic life support load. So, size does matter, and there is a hard limit to how long 250-gram drones can fly. Top (edit) consumer drones are at that limit by competition.
@johncgibson472025 күн бұрын
And think about having 2 pods (with an actuator to make vector angle) and 1 pod, and helicopter endurance will not be so mythical. It will be just a continuum.

So it's really just more efficient because it has bigger props (and at this point ZERO load). It's mass to prop size ratio is crazy high as it's just a skeleton with zero durability, and it's overall power probably couldn't handle more than a light wind. It's not like people aren't building their own quads all the time. All in all, it's just a tech demo, with advantages that will fade quickly once it actually has to carry a payload and accomplish anything useful.

Why use geared motors? Aren't you introducing inefficiency, complexity, weight, and more parts to break or wear out? Why not direct-drive BLDC motors? They can be custom-configured to your torque, speed, and power requirements with more efficiency, less weight, and fewer parts. Not to mention quieter!
@EinzigfreierNameАй бұрын
I was thinking the same but a direct drive would need motors with a bigger diameter and they would probably end up heavier than the combination of smaller motors + gear. Question is though how significant this weight advantage is and if it's worth the extra complexity.
@ernie5229Ай бұрын
@@EinzigfreierName That's not how gearboxes work. They don't make the motor output more power, they just trade speed for torque. You ADD weight by using a gearbox. The only possible time when a gearbox is better is when an inrunner motor + gearbox efficiency is higher than an outrunner motor alone. That has not been the case for a while. Or if you can't find an outrunner configured the way your requirements demand. But, again, the market is flooded with almost every possible size/configuration of outrunners.
@EinzigfreierNameАй бұрын
@@ernie5229 I know how gearboxes work. Of course they don't increase power but to drive a big propeller you need high torque and that is normally produced by relatively big (pan-shaped) outrunners which tend to be heavier than a smaller motor with the same power but high RPM. In theory a direct drive should always be more efficient if you look at the drive efficency alone. But if a smaller motor + gear box ends up being lighter, this could be an advantage. For me it's hard to believe this is worth the extra complexity but I guess these guys did there homework on this.
@ernie5229Ай бұрын
@@EinzigfreierName Or they didn't and would benefit from the correct motor as both you and I have pointed out!
@bearospaceinsider5250Ай бұрын
The answer is not to do with the motor but rather with the propeller efficiency. Gearing allows you to swing a larger diameter propeller and the increased disk area results in decreased disk loading which is aerodynamically much more efficient. Same concept as ultra high bypass turbofans. Which also uses gears.
