The 'premium connectivity' (internet connection) that was included in the price of my Model 3 Long Range runs out in September this year. Cost to continue will be £10 per month, so that's another £120 per year to be factored in. Even so, I totally agree with you that the car is way cheaper to run than any car I've ever owned before. And way more fun. What's more, I won't miss arguing with car dealership service departments over extortionate bills for clutch / brake pads / hoses / cam belts and other components all suspiciously worn out well before time. And about time too. Thank you for a great presentation Chris.

The further you drive in an EV the more money you save compared to petrol. Avg driving of 20-30km per day wont say any money per year due to the increase cost of insurance of EV vs petrol unless the depreciation of an EV is a lot less than a petrol car.

This vid got me thinking about all the maintenance I had to pay for on my past ICE cars: Oil changes, brake jobs (pads and discs), fuel filter, transmission oil and filter, oil pan gasket, timing belt, water pump, tune ups, O2 sensor, muffler, emissions tests, spark plugs, thermostat, alternator, starter, serpentine belt, hoses, fuel injectors,..... Just on brake jobs, I'll probably save US$2,000 for the life of the Model 3. Front pads 4 times, front rotors 2 times, rear pads twice. I would like to think all mechanics are honest, but it wouldn't surprise me if I got screwed by shady mechanics over the years. Don't even want to think about it. lol

Thanks. I got a quote for a performance model yesterday and it came to £710 with ncb protected. and it pains me to just "waste" money like that. However having now done the maths... My golf R just renewed at £470. I then have to pay about £200 for the road tax. About £200 for an oil change and from time to time haldex service £110, DSG service £220, rear brake pads cost me £160 last year and the pads themselves are not cheap from tps etc etc. If I stop at just the oil change its already cheaper for the tesla and my main gripe these days is taking the car to the main dealer or an independent where for the most part they just want to upsell you stuff or try to flog you another car hence why have have to do all these tasks for my kids and mrs car as they could easily fall trap of this (thats 4 vehicles altogether and an feel like a full time job on its own!)....Rant over.....Thanks again and hope you continue enjoying your car :)

Hi great review of model3 running costs are well below ice cars only problem is need to be cheaper to purchase
@gjilanijoe6 ай бұрын
For the potential owner/ driver this is crushingly inaccurate, the elephant in the room is depreciation. I did a very fair comparison thinking as I was thinking of changing my 14 year old 38 mpg petrol estate car with meteoric mileage on it. Given it was £4.5 k 7 years ago and is probably now worth about £1.7 K I did the maths over what 4 years would have looked like . A Tesla would cost approx £550.00 per month to run at 10,000 miles per annum. ( £400 pcm is depreciation !) Look at the value of a 4 year old Tesla with 40k on the clock) I included insurance which when I looked for an average UK cost is now £800 PA for a Tesla. My venerable but incredibly reliable 220k Japanese estate costs exactly £243.00 pcm to run- everything- all in - tyre wear , servicing, insurance MOT the lot. Even a £300 allowance Per annum for brakes etc - the usual things. Over 3 years I worked out the Tesla would cost approximately £26.4 K ( all in ) Running my vehicle depreciating at £33 per month has cost me £11.6 K on exactly the same mileage. Yes there is massive difference in fuel costs but this is disproportionately being focused by car reviewers. Given the major part of the carbon footprint of a vehicle is the building and construction we should focus on lighter vehicles and using our feet. I am off to re-sole my shoes.
@gjilanijoe6 ай бұрын
Sorry, calculation on the £26.4 K tesla cost and existing vehicle £11.6 k is over 4 years.

Ok, random question; you mention the regenerative braking, which sounds awesome btw. My question is, as you're not using the brakes the majority of the time, do the brake lights come on when you lift off the accelerator?
@SpawnPoiint3 жыл бұрын
It's a good question, and one I did demonstrate in one of my earlier videos (I can't remember which one). Yes, the lights do come on. But only at a certain point, ie when the car feels like it's starting to 'brake' using regen, the lights come on. Also, the little car icon on the screen (next to the speedo), shows you a live feed of your brake lights, so when they light up, you know your brake lights are showing too.

The fuel cost formula is a bit skewed for us in the U.S. Our gasoline costs are significantly less and if you have an efficient gas car the cost of fueling in gasoline can actually be cheaper than the cost of electricity. Where I live my my electricity rate is $0.14/kWh all the time, no preferential rates for time of day. Regular gasoline in the U.S. currently is at $1.99/gal. With that said, you still are going to make up most of that cost differential in the reduced maintenance. For me I replaced a VW GTI with a Chevy Bolt. The GTI required premium gasoline which meant my gasoline cost per gallon the last 5 years averaged around $2.75/gal and at that price the cost to charge at home is cheaper than gasoline. I save about $800 per year in fueling costs. And on top of that I save roughly $200/year on oil changes. However, where I live I do have to pay an annual $75 EV registration fee above and beyond the regular vehicle registration cost to make up for lost fuel taxes.

I had an i3 until September when I switched to Model 3. Had a similar experience with the tyres, in one month I had 3 punctures on 2 occasions. BMW recovered the car both times and took 3 days to replace them as they were hard to get hold of. I am hoping the more 'normal' size of the Model 3 will be easier to get and perhaps more robust!

@@NickJones-sf3zj I have to agree, I had 4 BMWs over the last 10 years or so and have never been able to fault their service or quality so it took a lot to turn my head to Tesla. Sure the quality and finish is not quite up there with BMW but it is good enough for most except the fussiest of people. And this video is of course for private buyers. For those who have one as a company car, there is zero benefit in kind tax for this year, then 1% next and 2% the year after, and if you happen to buy as a limited company, you can offset the whole price against your corporation tax, which is currently 19%. Its a bit like when solar panels first came out, the government were too generous and changed the allowances quite quickly, suspect that the amazing tax advantages won't last long!

I checked with UK wholesale electricity at about £71 per megawatt hour previously in the year. When I was forced to shift to Octopus the on the day price was 28 pence ( £280/MWh ). 5p/KWh is a big loss to the supplier. About a year ago I was paying 11p then 16 p. When the new nuclear reactor in Somerset was said to be just under 12p/kHWh it was said to be a dreadful price. Now it looks OK. If you take gas at 3p/kWh and a best possible conversion rate is 7p/kWh of gas generated electricity. Even that is a 2p loss. Gas I think is about 9 pence/kWh right now implying about 20p for gas produeces electricity. 28 p gives them a profit. Wind I believe can give 6p/kWh if the wind blows.

Been binge watching your videos as seriously considering switching to a model 3. Currently I run a BMW X1 which I lease. Plan would also be to lease a Model 3. Although the monthly cost would be higher I’m thinking the savings of not having to buy diesel, no road tax and all the other savings you mentioned in the video would more than offset the additional lease cost. As I’m retired now I only cover around 10K miles per year which is mostly local, so I’m thinking standard range + would be all I’d really need. Appreciate you posted the video a while ago but based on more experience now you’ve had the car longer would you say my thinking would be correct ? @@SpawnPoiint Well, there's quite a discussion going on at the moment on the TMC forum teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/curb-rash.197518/ regarding kerbed rims but interestingly, it seems the 245 Goodyear Eagles have a slight lip which protrudes further than the rim and helps protect from kerbing. Which tyres on your car Chris ? The tyres on my current Lexus RX bulge out much further than the rim and tbh I don't think you could kerb the Lexus rims if you tried.

Another UK saving is that if you can pursuade your employer to do salary sacrifice leasing then your lease payment is tax rate free. There is zero BIK on electric cars this year, 1% next year. So in my case my monthly payment is just £290 for model 3 long range. That cost includes all servicing and tyres.
@SpawnPoiint4 жыл бұрын
That’s an awesome price for a lease !
@tomooo26374 жыл бұрын
@@SpawnPoiint there is a anomaly in the UK tax rate which is effectively 60% for a narrow range of pay, so my lease cost to me is 40% of total.

On the insurance, I have been quoted £1.5k - 6 years no claims... that was from Churchill. I can only assume it’s based on age?
@SpawnPoiint4 жыл бұрын
There are so many factors. Age, location, parking, annual mileage, I've even read it takes into account previous cars. I'm early 30s in Yorkshire.
@duncanbaza4 жыл бұрын
@@SpawnPoiint There’s no escaping the insurers. Thanks for your thoughts, I’m late 20’s so might be mostly due to age and not having as many years No Claims Discounts. Such a pain!

Still much higher that what I pay for my car. Even with monthly car repayment

I think NCD usually caps around 5 years and after that doesn't make a difference. That's according to my brother who works at Admiral anyway. Insurers on their end also start your NCD at -2, so when you have 2 years NCD you actually have 0. Again, came from my brother so maybe take with a pinch of salt 😂
@SpawnPoiint3 жыл бұрын
haha, that could be true. When ever I get my yearly NCD letter, it shows 9 years, but I have 13. I always ask them to add a note that I have more.

You say the regenerative braking covers 100% of your braking needs. But, what if you're going down a hill? Is the regenerative braking strong enough to overcome gravity?
@SpawnPoiint4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the hill I guess. My drive has a decline and the regen stops the car from rolling, I have to use power to move it down. The regen is very strong though, it's as good as using 50% normal brake power I'd say.

Our Tesla model 3 charging costs is usually at least 50% lower than it should be because several locations that we go to offer free charging of electric vehicles as a complimentary service for shopping, eating at restaurants, or other purchases. On an annual basis, we currently spend less than 100 US dollars on electrical charging costs and that does not calculate in the free services we haven't used yet on credits to use with Tesla. Little to no inspections, smog tests, and other vehicle maintenance that usually adds somewhere between 500 and 2,000 dollars to automobile costs on an annual basis give great incentive to never go back to buying ice cars in the future. And yes, we still have some ice vehicles, but they'll become obsolete soon enough.

Amazingly informative and easily the best video I've seen around EV running costs. You mentioned that you can offset the monthly rental cost against the running cost but I just wanted to ask how you do this? Is it through a business only or personal use as well? Thank you!
@jameshaestier71504 жыл бұрын
You’ve missed depreciation! By far the biggest annual cost of owning a new car. Currently Tesla’s hold their value better than almost any other car.
@SpawnPoiint4 жыл бұрын
True, if you’re going to buy/sell it it’s definitely a factor, but if you’re leasing/PCH/PCP it’s irrelevant. Whereas the running costs remain the same regardless of the purchase method.

Because a dollar is worth less than a pound primarily. Plus different taxes and costs for the manufacturer in different territories
