You should have used a gasket. It's not that big of a deal but since the diff bolts to the housing (instead of the diff being bolted IN the housing then theres just a cover that bolts on) that gasket provides a bit of spacing to locate the diff perfectly inline with the axel shafts. It'll be a little cockeyed, but you won't really notice it, the wheel bearings will just wear a little faster.

In this episode Moose stuffs Dave's rear end with two shafts. Then he makes sure it's sealed tight with his caulk before pumping it full of "magic" fluid.
@mrmidnight326 жыл бұрын
Just a FYI boys, I know it's said and done. But for future reference you don't flatten and spread RTV with your finger like moose did. It's a common mistake, Even per their instructions it tells your with liquid RTV gaskets is to lay a nice even bead around the surface. Apply the parts and screw to hand tight for 2-6 hours. Then tighten to spec and leave for 24hr to fully cure. When you flatten with your finger it may be spread more in one area than another. And your finger actually collects a LOT of the rtv. When you allow the parts surface to flatten it slightly before curing. Then allowing the cure to be put to spec it evenly spreads the rtv across most of the surfaces. Any voids or pits get filled in with the rtv which may be missed by letting your finger flatten and spread the rtv. That said, keep on keeping on boys!! 👍

Time to ding you on the rear housing seal job. :-D 1. You should ideally be using anaerobic sealant - that way you don't have to worry about it setting up too quickly, but it will set really quickly once it's actually bolted up. 2. Don't forget that the sealant should be around the inside edge, between the opening and the studs/holes. If you only seal around the edges (running the bead around the outside of the studs), the oil can still get to those studs and weep up to the surface. I realise what you did isn't necessarily going to fail...but personally, I'd rather not take the chance on having to do it over - it really doesn't cost you a whole bunch more or take a huge amount of extra time, so worth the effort in my book. Looking forward to seeing Connie moving under her own power - soon! :-)
@TheZohanLohan6 жыл бұрын
Was just gonna say this. I can already see it leaking from around the studs
@aussiebloke6096 жыл бұрын
The other lovely thing about anaerobic sealant is that if any squeezes out, it stays liquid, so cleanup on the outside is easy - and there's no chunks of sealant whirring around with the gears on the inside. :-)
@speedacademydave6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. We'll see if she leaks!
@aussiebloke6096 жыл бұрын
No worries, mate - I want to see Connie finished (as much as any project is finished, anyway) almost as much as you. Btw, anaerobic sealant is also _really_ good for the oil pan - no worries about bits of cured sealant gumming up the oil pickup, which is always a relief. Now hurry up and get the old girl finished! :-D
@speedacademydave6 жыл бұрын
hah, we'll have to try the anaerobic sealant next time we install an S2000 oil pan :D

Quick question, how do the axles stay in the housing? From my understanding you need some type of c clip in the diff to keep the axles from shooting out the sides of the car. How do the axles stay in when there isn't a diff cover to remove to access these c clips?
@maxperez78756 жыл бұрын
Cameron Lancaster no c clips on the ae86 rear end. Four bolts hold the axle in place.
