The ASM is to prevent you from doing a submarine type move. If you don't rotate in an accident with a 4 point your only direction to go is down. Since your hips and back are supporting you up those will be what takes the impact potentially breaking your back. Since 5 and 6 points don't allow that downward movement they dont require asm technology.
@DarkMat90
@DarkMat90 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and it's not a requirement for strange rules, rather because submarining kills you. In fact racing harnesses are moving to 5 and 6 point even in lower categories now.
@gordowg1wg145
@gordowg1wg145 5 жыл бұрын
Not so much protecting the back*, but, as you two pointed out, physically slidine under the lap belt - this can also happen with lap/shoulder belts when incorrectly fitted or worn. NOTE, for overweight people who have it on their belly, you are making this even worse. The lap belt should be across the hips and correctly fitted this is usually easy to do with a 3/ point with shoulder harness BUT I have seen many, many videos where pweople who have no idea how to wear a harness will keep tightening the shoulder harness and as a result pulling the lap belt further and further up the torso, away from the strong hips and across the soft belly area - both increasing the chance of slipping under the belt and internal injuries. The further the seat is relined the more likely the driver (and co-driver) are to 'submarine' and be injured. Correctly fitted, the groin strap(s) will hold the lap belt DOWN, across the hips, and also add some restraint against the body. I've never used a single strap, don't like the thought of a single strap crushing my dangly bits, and two straps can be relatively comfortable. Furthermore, submarining can significantly reduce the effectiveness of HANS type devices, which many Motorsport bodies now require, as they work with the upper belts. *back injuries have been uinder investigation for some years, with significant improvements made, in F1, WEC and other sports where the drivers have been more inclined as the seat shape, curved lower back and the more 'vertical' loading on the lower spine has been causing spinal fractures - some of you may like to check up on that.
@ilyafr86
@ilyafr86 5 жыл бұрын
the breakaway removes the need for a hans with a 4-6pt harness. without the breakaway you either submarine as said above or your head goes straight forward and breaks your neck. most crashes above 40mph iirc involving harnesses without a hans/breakaway/asm are fatal because of this!
@gordowg1wg145
@gordowg1wg145 5 жыл бұрын
@@ilyafr86 You mean a basal (AKA basilar, IIRC) skull fracture* - the force on the head physically breaks the base of the skull as it bpulls on the top of the spinal column - sometimes it is called an internal de-capitation. People have survived some very high speed crashes without it, but why take chances - however, it is rather impractical for road use, so the ASM option is a good compromise. From what I understand, the principle behind ASM is that by allowing more movement of the upper torso the body is kept more vertical and so less likely to slide under the lap belt. Some guff here - www.schrothracing.com/products/rallye-belts and here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp_WmJKwmpJ2fZo *Perhaps one of the most notorious fatal crashes was that of Dale Earnhardt - he was VERY vocal against the introduction of HANS in NASCAR and refused to use one, yet was killed by the very type of injury the HANS was being introduced to prevent (or at least minimise)!

10:47 The E36 uses a newer design window switch to the E30. It's actually a common mod for E30 guys to install E36 switches. Fun fact: The McLaren F1 uses E36 power window switches.

I used to remove the rear seats, and strip the trunk when I went drifting for weight reduction, but it actually felt worse with less weight in the rear! Although I imply you guys did it for aesthetics; but until you corner weigh without the seats, I highly recommend keeping them there. a full tank also helps ^_^.

That handbrake will not work very well for drifting. The stock drum brake style handbrake isn't powerful enough to lock rear tires on asphalt at higher speeds. Even after correct adjustment.

The ASM thing is so that you don't slip down and out of your seat in a frontal collision. Otherwise you'll end up crumpling your legs real bad. As you said, due to the breakaway being only on one side, it will behave like a three point belt in regular road legal cars. It lets your upper body go a bit forward and basically "wraps" you around the lower part of the belt. If it wouldn't, your butt would be sliding forward.

That is a lot of messing around - should just have had someone hold the release button in while you drilled it for an "R" type clip - stick it in when competing and take it out for normal use. A bit more complicated is modifying the pawl arrangement to a fly-off button - with this, the button is pushed in to lock and is normally 'free' in that the ratched/pawl doesn't engage.

The stiffness is a byproduct of having non-foldable seats, not directly rendered by them. There is sheet of metal behind the non-foldable seats (since there is no need for trunk passage in that case), and THAT part is what adds rigidity, not the cushions.
