I use to run a speed shop. Shut it down yrs ago to do private repairs. A guy off street outlaws brought his car to me to get his axle rebuilt. According to him, it was the quickest axle repair he had ever seen and also the quietest his rear end has ever been. Told me he was def coming back. He called me a few weeks later, told me he was sorry, but his sponsors didn't want a no name private shop fixing anything on the car. We both laughed, haven't seen him sense. Funny though, a good friend of mine that builds transmissions can tell someone about me, and all the sudden my phone is blowing up from multiple people wanting good, honest work done. Keep up the good work, and honest doings.

Take the old pinion bearing and slightly grind the I/D so it slips on / off the pinion gear easily. Use that to set up the shim thickness and once you have the correct shim then press the new bearing on and do final install.

That’s assuming the new bearings are exactly the same. You’re better off getting two of the bearings you plan to use on final install and doing that to one of them for setting the pinion depth. Swap it out for the new one press fir, and you’re good to go.

Nice work Pete and Dave. You guys sure made life hard for your self-doing all that work under the car instead of just pulling the axle out from under the car and working on a bench.. Since you have all new suspension components.. Pro tip time! If your ever in a rear diff again.. and it’s a shim style pinion gear ( like you have) and not a crush sleeve, take the old pinion bearing your pressed off take the die grinder to the inside of it and take off some material, just enough so it slides back on the shaft… (yes the shaft) of the pinion then it becomes a test bearing and you can slide it off easy so you can get the right back lash and proper amount of shims and it not be a royal pain of pressing bearings once you get the shims right you can press on the new bearing . Keep doing what you guys do! And I’ll see you guys at gridlife 2017 back here in MI. -Jake

I worked with a guy at ford who had a electric small size deep fryer but he kept transmission fluid in it and he would take and drop his pinion bearing into that and let it heat up to 250* then install it on the pinion without having to press it

Hey guys. Really don't understand how you guys aren't more popular then you already are. Would you consider further upgrading the exhaust by having a dual exit valve controlled system? Side exits without cats or mufflers and rear exit with. It would a cool power comparison and the side exits would be so fantastically obnoxious.

Hey guys when cleaning a gasket surface don't use a sanding disk you a wire wheels. I have seen people use sanding disk and then the cars come back with a leak cause you took too much metal off one side causing an uneven mating surface therefore you do not get a proper seal.
@speedacademy
@speedacademy 8 жыл бұрын
That is not a sanding disk but an aluminum scuff disk that takes the silicone off and doesn't harm the metal.

I got a 13gt that makes a constant noise from the rear axel. The noise sounds like when you first drive your car after its been siting for a long time and the rotors have gotten a bit rusty so as soon as you drive you hear them scraping of the rust. This is the noise it makes constantly. I have taken it to many ford dealerships and have had their top guys look at it with stethoscopes and whatnot. They say the noise comes from the right side of the axel but they don't know why its doing it. When they opened op the rear dif to check the fluid they said the fluid is clean no shavings of metal at all. The car is still covered under powertrain warranty. The car also has a lot of suspension mods so the dealer said this might be a noise that's always there but you are noticing it now due to the stiff links and bushings. Did some research online and a lot of ppl are reporting this noise. Any thoughts?
@riskyricky22

Why take shortcuts on the diff install guys?? Make some test bearings that dont need to be pressed on/off to get shims dialed in. Suspension will not matter if you can't get the power down.

The only real worry is noise. They might whine/whur. Have a buddy who didn't get it quite right but kind of sounded like blower so we put up on a lift just check how off the pattern was. decided to leave it 25k later still holding up fine. It's a manual car running drag radials. not a monster but 13.0s all day long. Jimmy real likes that almost blower sound,even coming from the back.

compared to the Panhard setup the Watts setup makes the rear of the car feel and behave the SAME in L and R corners. with the Panhard setup L and R corners feel different when the car is driven on the limit of grip.

next time with the pinion shimming try making a 'dummy bearing' by slightly enlarging the old bearing so it can just slide on and off of the pinion. that way you can recheck the mesh without pressing the bearing on and off.

also the backlash measurement was done at the wrong place. It needs to be done at the outside of the ring. where you measured it's going to seem tighter than it actually is.

I need help from you two! I have a 2006 GT that two mechanics have worked on to solve a whining differential. The first had the car two weeks, charged over $300 in time and did nothing. The second has also had the car two weeks, put in all new gears, and the thing still whines under load. He said they set it up dozens of times and can't seem to find the issue. I believe he is honest and I want to help him. Is there any way I could get you on the phone with him? I've invested almost $1,200 and I'm at my wits end, and I know he is too. Is it normal for a GT rear end to whine? I'm not talking about a subtle whine. It is loud.
