I am a native English speaker and I live in USA. We all answer “I’m fine” when someone asks how are you, and depending on the person they will in return ask how you are. Saying “I’m fine” usually indicates that you feel neutral, not too happy not too sad, or aren’t feeling that great and just don’t want to worry the person.

As an American and a business English trainer, I also answer with "fine" and I recommend that response to my clients as well. It's neutral and easier for beginning non-natives to remember.

I can't speak for the people this guy knows but I was born and raised in England. I've spent an awful lot of time in English speaking countries, including Australia, New Zealand and the USA, and still travel widely within the UK. It is EXTREMELY COMMON for native English speakers to answer "I'm fine" to the first question!

The idea is to use more colorful language, which is something I always try to encourage my students to do. “I’m fine” is totally correct, but it can be boring sometimes. Great video for ESL/EFL learners. I have never ever heard of hunky dory. I do not recommend anyone use that.

My English teacher told me that if we want to sound like a native we should start learning the "usage" which is the way normal people talked among themselves. She said they know we are not native speakers even with the correct pronunciation and accent if our usage was different. If it sound very British or formal of course everybody will understand us but will sound foreign. It is like any other language. If a latin person goes to Spain she must learn some words and phrases that we never use in our country.

I'm a native speaker in Chicago in the US. Hearing "Fine" or "I'm Fine" as answers to "How are you?" or "How are you doing" sounds perfectly normal to me. "Fine, thanks" is another answer I've heard a lot. "Fine" is just fine.

'I'm fine' or 'Fine, thanks, how are you' are probably the most common answers to 'how are you' in the USA and the UK. It's also not all that important as long as your response is polite, brief, and appropriate to the situation. The latter is perhaps the most important as you would only give an 'honest' answer to close friends and family. People don't really want to know how you are doing. It's a phatic or formulaic greeting that demands an equally formulaic response, like 'fine, thanks, and you' even if you are not doing well.

Agreed... Your comment brought back an old memory... one time (long ago) I was a Graduate teaching assistant at a University, and I ran into one of my undergraduate students on campus. This was an amiable student who I liked superficially, but we had not talked outside of class. He asked how I was, and I was in fact having a really bad day, and a bad week. Instead of the usual (but untrue) response, "I'm fine, what's up with you?" I simply said honestly and bluntly "I'm doing terrible." I was feeling too sad to pretend to be happy. This triggered an immediate conversation - we sat down on the lawn, he seemed to appreciate my honesty, and we talked for a good while. We became friends from that time onward, sharing much more (including many good and fun things) which we never would have shared if I had not been honest, and if he had not responded to that honesty. This was sort of in version of what you said in your comment... Most people don't really want to know how you are doing... but if a person really does want to know, they may well become a good friend.

I´ve been a native for 56 years and I always say I´m fine and so does everyone else. It´s a formality, part of a greeting that´s all. No one really wants to know how you actually are (except people close to us), we just greet each other like this.

Greeting seems simple but it is pretty darn difficult! “i'm fine, thank you“! is existing only in Britain and countries which introducing British English as a second language! I had to have long difficult time until I finally got rid of this term, as people here in the US never say it! I sounded weird whenever I had said it! Thank you soooo much for this helpful lesson

My British and American friends say 'I'm fine' or 'fine' if the question is how are you? If the question is 'How are you doing?' the response is I am doing well (British) or I am doing good for American. I know I am doing good is incorrect (grammar mistake but American doesn't care)

I'm American, a native English speaker, and I have heard the response "so so", and have used it myself. Of course, it is a little bit negative, and generally people prefer to say something more positive as a response. So although it is not as common a response as some, it is not all that uncommon either, in my opinion.

Here in England it's completely OK and commonplace to say "I'm fine". I think this is more of a cultural difference between the UK and the US as Americans tend to exaggerate more when asked how they are, how an experience was, etc. by using words like "good", "great", "awesome", whereas Brits tend be a bit more low key I suppose and describe things as "fine", "alright", "OK".

I wouldn't listen to this person as many native speakers in England use 'I'm fine' and it seems like alot of people in the USA as well. Using 'I'm fine thank you ' is the polite way of answering the question. This person's video is completely wrong.

I wonder if you need to visit more of Canada! Where I'm from, 'I'm fine...' is a relatively common response for native English speakers, however it does tend to have many nuances underneath the meaning. For me and for many people I know, it's more of, 'I'm not totally fine but I don't have the time or desire to get into it right now with you.' However, I also hear it often as a legitimate response to the question. Overall, I consider it a dry response regardless of the undertone which intuitively (for both me and other native English speakers I know) means that the person is not open to go into further detail whereas, 'I'm great!' is often an open invite to continue the conversation. As far as so-so goes, I wonder if it's heard more often in Eastern Canada because we're also used to hearing the French translation, 'comme ci comme ça'... although, I will admit that so-so isn't as common as it once used to be. Personally I tend to say, 'Meh, I'm okay but...' in place of so-so, but even my 23 year old daughter who is 4th generation Canadian will say, 'So-so...' when I ask how she is doing. Overall I think it's good that we have many choices to choose from. I think one of the most challenging aspects for those learning English as a second language is that we have a habit of not being literal all of the time. Perfect example is your use of 'pretty'. It shouldn't make sense in the context you're using it in but we insist on using the word as an informal adverb - how confusing!

Greets! I was born and raised in London, Ontario and I have spent a decade of my life in Edmonton, Alberta. In my experience, Ontario English speakers tend to ramble more and be rather abstract and in Alberta, many people I spoke to were more literal and direct. I guess I started watching your videos because I like learning how we are uniquely Canadian (the first video I watched was the Canadian Pronunciation one) but that was before I realized your channel was directed towards teaching (Canadian) English to prospective immigrants. Then you started going political and that's been interesting so far. I enjoy hearing other perspectives even though I'm really conflicted on the subject myself. I also like learning. Grammar is not really a strong point for me. You're easy on the ears, lol! Meaning, you're very articulate and you have a smooth, moderate rhythm and your voice pitch is a good frequency for me. You might think that's an odd observation, but I'm profoundly deaf in one ear and my other is not too far behind. So I appreciate that I can actually listen and understand every word even if I'm not directly watching you. It's refreshing to have a channel that I don't need subtitles to! I just overall enjoy your channel however I acknowledge that I've been a little critical, especially with the usage of absolutes and being over-simplified at times. I appreciate that you take your time to respond to comments and it's nice to converse with someone who is genuinely nice and who has some cool ideals for Canada.

Those were the exact phrases we got brainwashed with at school here in Thailand LOL. The most common words to use when you want to begin a conversation. Later, and much later in my life, I've been told that " I'm fine" is rather irrelevant and even misconduct to use in some contexts.

I was asked : "How are you ?" at church in Australia by an elderly Christian lady. As usual, I replied: " I am fine, thanks." She said: " Only God is good." A few seconds later, she asked me the same question again. I gave her the same answer without thinking about what she just said. Obviously she thought that I was not a good learner and she was very disappointed. Nowadays I still give the same answer after more than 20 years after.

If I were greeted 'How are you?' I might respond "Yeah, I'm not bad' because I heard it from native speakers in London (England, not Ontario). The response 'So-so' is probably the direct translation from Italian 'così così' (as an answer to 'Come va?' meaning 'How's it going?'). If things are not going great, the Italians I know (as well as we in Poland) hardly ever respond in the strongly positive way.

The part you forgot... when some asks, "How are you?" "How's it going?" We don't actually want an answer, we are just being polite and offering a quick greeting. So, when a person replies they shouldn't give an in-depth answer. Because 90% of the time we don't actually care. As for so-so or I'm fine... I hear those all the time, from native speakers... And yes I was born and raised as a native American English speaker.

I'm native English. Occasionally, I say, "I'm fine", if I don't want to get in to how I really feel. I have also been known to say, "So so"

I noticed this when I was younger and made a conscious decision to either answer Good or Bad and be honest about it. "I'm fine" puts you in an emotional grey zone.

The right way is to say: "I thought you'd never asked." Then start talking about your day, problems, etc. That way NO ONE will ever ask you that question again. Or say: "I am FINE!" with an attitude. 😎

Edgard Argueta. You can certainly say you're South American or North America or Central American but if you say simply American it means from The United States of AMERICA! It's part of the name of the country. For the sake of brevity and because the alternatives are too awkward we.have and will continue to call ourselves Americans. Get used to it.

Hunky dory mean its done , its fine , its ok . I use it ocasionaly in explanations , eg that way everthing will be hunky dory . David Bowie released an album late 70s titled hunky dory

I´m a native english speaker from England and we do say "I´m fine". We also say "I´m ok thanks" and sometimes we say "So so". meaning we´re ok but could be better. "How`re you doing ?" is normally answered by "Not bad", "Ok thanks" etc.
