To all the commenters who said this, we didn’t miss the point. We got the point. We just didn’t like the film. It is possible to get the film and dislike it. I say what the point was and how I didn’t care at the end. Guess people didn’t make it that far in before they commented telling me I don’t get it. But if you go to 9:40 you’ll see me say this very thing. So funny how upset people get when they disagree with you on anything nowadays.

It's pretty believable, Bjorn tried doing something during the car soon but got put in his place and just became broken. I've seen it happen on kidnapped victims who become mentally broken to the point where they don't even try to escape anymore. Some people are just that weak mentally and physically.

The movie started to really go downhill when the 'good' parents saw the 'bad' husband verbally abusing his young son (and in front of their own daughter). The normally spineless father even stood up and objected to it and the mother got so upset that she bolted from the house, yet the couple still stayed at the home for the night as if nothing had happened. This was after they had tried to leave a day earlier after the 'bad' couple had displayed rude behavior that was much less abhorrent. And then the final ten minutes of the movie were just ridiculously idiotic.

No. I hate it because it basically is some sick power fantasy for psychopaths. The ending was not in anyway realistic. People do not just let those things happen. Especially, a family. And when someone tells me, "that's the point." If I wanted to watch something that warned against passivity, I can watch a 22 minute episode from a children's cartoon. The movies killers are just Evil versions of the Mary Sue. Doing whatever they want because the plot demands it. At the cost of realism.

I have met people like this. Having worked emergency security in the past for over a decade I have been in most "horror movie settings" (closed hotel, cabin in the middle of the forest were you need to read a map when the road stops, mansions with creepy horror art etc) and met both criminals (silent alarm) and victims. I would argue most people talk like they are tough guys, but in reality most are cowards. A few punches to the face or a setting were fear has gripped them and people become rather sheepish. People often think they would be brave in settings until they actually happen. Now, I am not a small guy, but the fear I have seen in the face of burglars when I step out of the shadow and ask them what they are doing. I always act "friendly" in such settings because that is the opposite of what people expect, which is unsettling. Anyway, allot of these burglars look like your average "Oh I would just beat up bla bla" characters, but when "Anton Chigurh" steps out in a security uniform and asks them if they need help to open that door. They suddenly become more sheepish for some reason. LoL, anyway, the point I am trying to make is that when the father gets beaten in the car. That could have been enough for some people. Secondly, I would argue since this movie is Danish. The dressing them naked at the end before the stoning has some fascist like implications because the Nazis did the same to their victims. People there also walked naked to their death in shooting pits or similar. You think all of them would be like "Yeah, I would just allow myself to get shot" before they via several settings and over time ended up in such a setting? Talk is cheap, action is hard, but maybe because of how most people feel, rather than how they would actually act in threatening settings, are different. Maybe the script for a movie should have been a bit more clear via using a bit more subjugating violence. That said, the whole movie is unrealistic. There is no way kids wouldnt attempt to flee. There is no way the serial killers would be able to operate there for long. Too many lose ends and other people knowing they went with friends they met at this place and so on... Decent movie, but I think there is a middle ground in context of the reaction pattern to the victims.

💯 Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. People definitely think they are the hero of their own lives and have complete control. It’s easy to say what people would do looking at it from the outside, but when it’s actually happening to them personally, people react entirely differently.

I agree with her , In America this is so hard to believe because it’s a common thing to speak up even in the slightest thing. This movie perhaps goes beyond into exaggeration but I like it because I think it tells people to identify the danger in kindness and naiveness to ignore body language/ gut feelings. Another person that reviewed the movie said that Bjorn was omitting crucial information to wife and daughter as some sort off shield instead of preparing them for danger. I think that’s important. -(other places don’t think like Americans do )

i highly disagree. It was one of the most believeable films to and that made it that disturbing. Im a 43 year old guy, if been in fosterhomes, grew up in childs care, went to youth prison, ive seen a lot. many people are exactly like this. Children that grew up being a punchingball and being stomped on by everybody, they never learn how to stand up for themselves and cant get out of this role their entire life. they freeze in the moment of terror. Your believe that people will fight for their life isnt based on reality. Not everybody will. Everybody knew a kid that was always beat down, never fought back and all it kept saying was "why are you hitting me, i didnt do anything", yes thats why you get terrorized, not because you didnt do anything but because you allow it. They dont magically grow out of that behaviour, just because theyre adults. Youve seen to many movies. Youre naive. Theres nothing in world taking more courage for a man than standing up to another male you know is much stronger than you. The only thing about the film making me sceptical was the stoning in the end. Ive been expecting them to shoot them.
@actionjackson8573
@actionjackson8573 2 жыл бұрын
This film was the opposite of being believable. Every single sign the parents got that they were in danger, they just shrugged it off. Even early on in the movie, the villian gave the father a creepy smile while he was having sex with his wife. Don’t get me started on him being naked WITH the little girl in the same bed. After all of that the couple still decided to stay. And in the ending the couple just accepted everything that happened to them. Real human beings have fight or flight. You don’t necessarily decide to make a decision, when you’re in danger you go off of instinct, and neither parent showed natural human instincts which isn’t believable whatsoever.

I disagree when I say that it’s “entirely unbelievable” when you talk about the characters reactions. If you look at serial killer history and stories of crazy tragedies you can see in many cases that many people don’t fight to live and they allow other evil people to do what they want to them. So I don’t think it’s unbelievable. American cinema is especially adept to creating a fantasy that if people are put into a hard situation they’ll just suddenly turn into a soldier and be able to fight off any attacker. But like I’ve said previously, many murders and show that many people give in in fear or hope that the attacker will let them live. There’s been so many cases of mothers or parents in general watching a murderer rape and torture their kid before strangling them or shooting them and they did nothing. So many people let themselves and their kids get tied up and beaten/stabbed/shot to death with no physical fight. So it’s unpleasant and aggravating and hard to watch but it’s NOT unrealistic.

And not to mention the film is a commentary on how political correctness and the pressure to be kind and give people the benefit of a doubt can be detrimental if it goes too far. When does society and PC become too civilized and too PC to where we lose our primal instincts and ability to protect and defend ourselves against evil when it presents ourself to it.
@mkh123
@mkh123 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. If anything, this movie was extremely realistic in depicting how many, if not most, people would react in such predicament. American movies usually paint a completely fantastical picture where everyone is ready to fight, when in reality, when faced with death, people usually just become passive and hope to be preserved. The ones who take action are far and few between.

I respect your opinion on the movie and I will admit I found it extremely frustrating as well with the lack of self defense from the parents and can see how that is just an instant turn off for you as horror fans. I will say though, despite feeling extremely nauseated and angry during it, it never once felt like the movie was not self-aware about how ridiculous the parents were being, it's definitely a pitch black satire on the culture of being yes-men and pushovers in situations that are uncomfortable, sort of an absurdist version of going with the flow even when it hurts you. The scene where the dad is ranting to the sociopath about how he feels like he has to keep his real feelings inside all the time and wear a mask perfectly foreshadows the ending where he doesn't fight back at all. But again, this is just an interpretation and hating the movie for doing this at all is completely reasonable, sorry you didn't enjoy it, and I can't really say I did on an emotional level but I do respect it as effective horror.

Glad to find a review that’s not adulating this film. Although the ending is shocking and effective, it’s not earned, and the reason, as you both mention, is that the heroes have no agency whatsoever, and the villains don’t seem particularly good at what they do, despite their body count. Moreover, our “heroic” couple told another couple where they were going. Plus they had cell phones, the location of which could be easily traced. Plus credit card receipts for gas and such. Not only that, the couple would’ve been best served by flying to the location, not driving. In any case, an electronic/paper trail follows them. Wouldn’t that have been the case for the other victims as well? The person who wrote this screenplay-I have no idea if the director was involved-gave absolutely no thought to small details that, when added together, sprinkle a breadcrumb trail right to the villains. And on a more fundamental level, why did the villains wait to dispose of the couple? Why not do it immediately? Oh, because the film needs some level of drama. This is a textbook example of a film that takes one illogical turn after another for its own sake.

Beyond that though, this couple was really naive, stupid, and lacked courage. The ending though, just got under my skin. But in my opinion that is a good thing. For a movie to just shake you to your core. I like it. One big flaw, or piece of advice, never go back for a stupid ass rabbit. I thought your reactions to the film were very interesting. If you really hated it, that's fine, but that reaction was, I think, precisely what the director was going for. Of course, reactions will differ depending on ones attitude going into the film. For you, that level of passivity is insufferable. For others, they're more tolerant and ready to avoid conflict and so they empathise more with the Danish couple. However, I believe the film intentionally presents an extremely passive couple to point out that the danger of inaction when facing an existential threat is fatal, and not just in everyday social interaction (this is not a film about social faux pas) but on the larger societal level where more tolerant values - let's say the values of liberal democracy - allow extreme and dangerous ideas to flourish. This is exactly what Haneke was suggesting in part in Funny Games. Your reaction is exactly the reaction of people who recognise the danger and would not be slow to respond. Unfortunately, not everyone is that reactive. Just look at the growth of right wing politics in Europe and you'll see that liberal democracy is 'too polite' to prevent these people from speaking, from running for parliament, from taking over the government...then what? I really liked the film. Like you, I found myself willing the couple to act, but the darkly comic nature of the situations made it a fun watch until the moment of no return and its true agenda became obvious.

You are correct these characters are not humans, they accepted everything without fighting back even a bit, but there is also another issue with the script: what the hell was the point of the whole scene of the husband speech on his life and then shouting on the cliff of the mountain? A totally useless scene who didn't have ang consequences or reason to exist since the husband kept behaving like a weak dog waiting to receive the punch from the other guy. WHY, I mean WHY? It is sad cause it could be a good film, the directing was not bad at all, but the script is ridiculous. I mean the man was not even able to punch the other guy or try save his daughter??? Unlike we, the audience, the protagonists don’t know that they’re in a horror film. Like anyone, they’re susceptible to normalcy bias, conformation bias, the sunk cost fallacy, social norms and pressures, shame around sexuality, wishful thinking, etc.. consequently they make allowances and excuses for the obviously egregious behavior displayed by their hosts assuming that they’re dealing with equally noble people (like so many people would). They can’t see the obvious danger until long after the audience has, leading to unease and frustration for many audience members. Terrifyingly though, this film’s protagonists were all too believable for those reasons. We’re all susceptible to flattery and unearned kindness. We all want to be civil, trusting, and accommodating of difference. We all let our own personal shames make us feel unworthy of speaking out. it’s easy to see that the protagonist’s decency blinded them to what we as horror viewers could see almost instantly. The end brutality reminds us that there are cruel people out there preying upon decent people because our decency makes us easy prey. Bjorn tries to fight back only after all hope for a peaceful resolution is finally gone in his eyes. But it’s too little and too late. The cold, almost matter of fact, unglamorous horror in those last sequences in the car and quarry really bring home the terror of this movie: these protagonists aren’t special. They’re just average people; Just like Abel and his family were, or the countless families before them were, or like any audience member likely would be if they were unlucky enough to meet such monsters. They’re not going to rise to the occasion to provide us with easy catharsis, they’re not going to make every decision perfectly because no one could. The world doesn’t work like that 99.9% of the time; neither does this film.

@@jesusnieves9221 the father wasn’t “neutralized” in the car. As his daughter was getting her tongue cut off, he did nothing other than get punched in the face a few times. I’m not a dad yet but I’m pretty sure a normal guy isn’t gonna stop me from protecting my daughter with a couple punches. It’s not like he got hit by Mike Tyson, what’s so frustrating about the film is the main “villian” is just a regular dude. He had no weapons, no background in fighting or specialized training, he wasn’t a genius or was so much smarter that he tricked everyone, he was well, just a guy. Not saying I’m a badass and I would’ve saved the day, but I sure as hell wouldn’t let such an average old guy do anything he wanted to me. What’s unrealistic is the father didn’t even fight back, he just accepted the entire situation and he let his wife, and more importantly his daughter down. And for that he is a bad person, has nothing to do with victim blaming.

I almost entirely agree. The scene in the car, where the evil couple takes the polite couple’s daughter literally over their laps, and they’re just sitting there screaming? That is the moment I decided I didn’t like it, for exactly what you said: this is no longer politeness? It makes no sense? It stretched the premise til that moment, but I was willing to accept it until THEY accepted everything. Ridiculous.

I just heard about this movie and decided to watch reviews over it before trying to rent it. I don't think that I can watch it because it will just piss me off. In all honesty, the premise is horrifying to me because I had to live through similar shit. This movie would hit waaaaay too close to home for me because I grew up in a household where I was taught to to be nice, to not fight for myself or stand up because if I did, then my nmom's friends/drug connections wouldn't want anything to do with her. She allowed people to treat me anyway they wanted to, their kids to do whatever (which lead to my infertility,) they (both the adults and the children) would bully me as a child in front of my nmom and step dad, but since it wasn't their youngest, it was okay. They (again adults and kids) would call me numbers of names, the kids would chase me with the plastic car tracks whipping me, one of them would even hit me in front of the adults, to which one of the druggie relatives would yell back "Hit her harder, with a closed fist!" When I would be the one to turn around and punch the kid in the face, well, I got my ass beat because he was a year younger than me and I should have known better. That wouldn't have been the only family that they let treat me like shit. Constantly growing up, her friends would hit on me or check me out, didn't matter if I was underage, but she would still be friends with them. She would only stop being friends if they made her look bad towards our then neighbors, like by asking them if they had pot. I'm no contact with my family due to what she put me through and who she allowed around me to do whatever.

That’s terrible. Sucks you had to go through it. Seems like you made it through it and aren’t them now which is what is important. There is definitely a level of cultural satire that some people will not be able to grasp. Probably because Its a Danish film and we are Americans. You can be upset all you want but the film made it very clear that the father in this film was not someone who deals with confrontation well. And after witnessing your child mutilated like that, if were truly helpless to do anything, would leave you soulless and defeated as well. I thought it was brutal and brilliant.

Yes. It is a horror movie and doesn't present itself as a work of non-fiction or based on real events. How many times do we lament what the characters in horror movies should have done to save themselves?? But then there'd be no movie, right? Nothing to propel the plot. So while I did find Speak No Evil to be disturbing and EXTREMELY! frustrating because of the couple's disregard for self-preservation, I don't think that fact alone constitutes it being a bad movie. I HATED their lack of action when it came down to life or death, but that doesn't equate to me hating the movie. Definitely memorable and unsettling, even without the typical terror elements and blood-soaked gore expected from the genre. I think maybe a lot of the people who disliked/hated the movie are associating that to how uncomfortable it made them feel.

I hated this movie and I don't understand how so many people liked it. Just because something is indie, doesn't mean it's good. Just because it makes you uncomfortable, doesn't mean they are doing something revolutionary. The main couple makes not only bad decisions (bad decisions can be used responsibly), they just make non-human decisions that actually go against their character. Have to disagree with you. The protagonists are living a good life in a nordic welfare state, with likely nothing bad ever having happened to them. They have likely never encountered even the threat of violence. They are not taught how to fight, they don't carry weapons, they are in a completely unfamiliar situation, that they are not equipped to deal with. Absolutely there are thousands of people who would act like them. And thousands who wouldn't. Most people want to avoid conflict and violence, and getting punched in the face will take the fight out of such people instantly. Aren't there dozens of such cases with real life serial killers too, even in the US, where the victims more or less just resigned to their fates?

What separates this from other disturbies is that once the films over you forget about the whole thing almost immediately. I only watched it like a month ago and all I can remember is it had nice cinematography and bits and pieces of the ending. Also recall the ‘villains’ being repugnant from the beginning. Like they wear their ASPD on their sleeve… ranting now but why tf would someone steal another parents kid and pretend to be the parents? They don’t have jobs? Are they traffickers? Why would they target upper middle class people? Missing child? That sh*t would make international headlines in no time. Funny Games already exist but kudos to the filmmaker for his efforts.

I think the constant ineffectiveness of the parents is the director using stereotypes we find in Denmark, Sweden and Norway in a satirical (and brutal) way. It’s not necessarily a criticism of it, but SNE shows how our overdone politeness, the inability to say “no” and general PC culture can be devastatingly useless given the right situation. No, I don't see the film as having anything to do with societal and cultural emasculation - that’s too obvious, and if it were, it’s too heavy-handed, it’s not a gendered argument. Much like Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, I read the film as a critique of the inadequacy of liberal democracy to deal with the existential threats posed by right wing / fascistic movements, especially in modern Europe. This seems obvious to me from the deliberate choice of nationalities for the protagonists/antagonists, to the symbolism of rendering children speechless - the inability of future generations to protest. I’m not suggesting that the Dutch are Nazis and the Danes are peace-loving liberals, but rather, as a Dane, Tafdrup sees Danes as passive observers and the Dutch as vocal and proactive. Whether he’s accurate about that or not is incidental - it’s merely the premise for a more global truth. Clearly there’s more going on here than simply pointing out how funny it is some people are more tolerant/intolerant to social faux pas than others. Of course, I also see the film as nothing more than a couple of hours of entertainment in a genre I enjoy, but if it’s going to be criticized, I think it’s also worth defending as it clearly has more to say than some audiences are acknowledging.

@@bobbydazzler8684 gendered? Come on bro. That's my bad for using a word that has multiple definitions. Funny Games is about the sensationalism of violence because that's what the audience wants. The director made that clear in several interviews. But now I know where you are coming from. Cool.

Sounds similar to Coming Home in the Dark...but that was way better and realistic. I'm pretty sure you said you enjoyed that one? The killers in that were more realistic and the family put up a pretty good fight against them.

It’s why I didn’t enjoy the film. I never said the film sucked. I said the characters made unreal decisions to me. I actually said it’s well made but because I didn’t like the characters I hated the film. You’ve never disliked characters so much you hated the film? We all have.

This movie has to be a satire about over civilised dummies.. at the end i almost laughed out loud and i was rooting for the evil couple.. it has to be intentional on the directors part right?!?

I didn’t understand why they didn’t put up a fight at the end? I woulda been swinging and clawing!! If you’re gonna die anyways why not go out swinging?? I even went back to double check if the weird family had a gun? No gun. Didn’t make sense to me

Yes it was totally frustrating watching that couple do nothing. If you can’t suspend disbelief for it consider that documentary “abducted in plain sight” and what those people allowed. To each their own but this was a really good movie.

Your perspectives are different as Americans, in general you people are much louder and brash. Western Europeans are far more timid, and will go to unimaginable lengths to avoid making a scene. The film portrays this kind of person perfectly.

Looks great & excellent score, but the consistently unbelievable decisions made this film terribly tedious trash. Hope remake improves on the execution of an interesting premise.

I should agree on your assessment. We got the point of the movie. You can dumb down the message of this movie as a punishment for a non-confrontational character. The movie simply just artistically shows an extreme damage that a social politeness could do to a character. They literally got invited in the first place because of this. With that being said, I just can't understand the characters at all. I've seen and love a lot of movies with the same genre (e.g. Eden Lake, Funny Games, The Stranger) that capitalize on the uneasiness, dread, and frustrating conclusion. However, the lack of survival instinct just simply makes this movie become drastically insufferable. Self-preservation is a hardwired human behavior. People that said it was the main point of how non-confrontational people could be just don't understand how bad writing this is. By seeing many praises came from this movie, I fully acknowledge that this movie is simply just not for me. However, I really hope that the trend of producing beautifully shot horror movie with a morally ambiguous message and borderline unrealistic situation, came to an end. I lost count on how many foreign horror movies in the past year that follows this trend.
