Speak No Evil hits theaters this weekend - but should you watch the new version or the original film from Denmark. I break them both down and give you my recommendation.

American's cannot handle the original with its bleakness. The remake is great on its own but it sure is sugar coated with its "happy" parts to it. Watched the original and it still bothers me! This new one should not have been made by Universal/Blumhouse making us feel good about dumbing down the second half.

What is ironic is the remake's director directed a movie with a very depressing ending - Eden Lake. So depressing and nihilistic I actually kind of hated it. I had a similar reaction to The Strangers. You can't make me despise the villains that much and then make them win, unless you are doing it in a way that is tongue-in-cheek like Funny Games.
@VigilanteVegan

They did the same with “The Vanishing.” The remake with Kiefer Sutherland was horrible! In the original, the end was the protagonist finding out what happened to his wife. In the remake, it’s only the beginning of the climax.

I kind of disagree. There are lots of American horror movies, particularly of the indie variety, which just end in bleakness. Oculus comes to mind, as does The Mist. But I was frankly refreshed to see a movie with a relatively happy ending for once. Sometimes I want to be thrilled and then let everything end mostly okay. We used to get more movies like that. It's also nice to have two different versions of the same basic premise now.

Same thing happened with The Descent. They changed the ending for the US audience bc it was too much. But after watching the original ending, I don't see why it is necessary. Also Get Out. The original ending was different but the audience Jordan Peele showed it too didn't react well to it so he changed it.

I know some do, a lot of horror ends with some kind of sour note, but that movie just made me feel so uncomfortable during the whole thing. Watching horror my whole life, you don’t come across that much as you get older … it was enough that I only watched it once. 😂 I was going to see this just to see what McAvoy does with it, but I have heard people who’ve seen both say they prefer this remake. One thing that's not often talked about in regards to the original is how Danish filmmakers have a tradition of provoking the audience. People like Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg (even the classic Carl Theodor Dreyer) sometimes operate with a "fuck off" attitude that can be off-putting, and SNE can be seen as a continuation of that. I guess the remake will stand as the most popular of the two films since the original's got no catharsis to speak of, only despair.

The third act of the remake reminded me heavily of "Straw Dogs" (both the original UK version and the US remake), and since much of that film is about the male fragility of its protagonist(s), making Ben more callow in the remake fit for me. The original’s ending was so sinister and wild. Spoiler alert: Also - Hollywood has this golden rule : a child can never be hurt in the movie - they always survive and will not be mimed at all. GOOD. Some films are not supposed to help you sleep easy in your bed. (not aimed at you per se, just in general) .... Morden audiences want to be "satisfied" they're far too hung up on it. It's a film makers RIGHT to make the film they want to make. And if they don't want to make you satisfied, it's because that was the film MAKER's intention.

I love them both as a double feature, watching the original first. In fact, for me it really works to think of the Blumhouse one as a sequel in which Patrick/Paddy and Karin/Ciara are literally the same characters using new aliases (or at least Patrick/Paddy). It even makes sense that their characters might look and be perceived so differently that being played by different actors works. I find this read beautifully effective with that opening sequence, too. For me, the two films work together to really deepen everything I love about this story, its characters, and its themes. I love both films more for how they complement each other. I think the Blumhouse is elevated and deepened by seeing the original first, letting it set the tone, atmosphere, and themes. However, I really appreciate the catharsis of the new version, particularly in contrast with the incredible (but extremely difficult) third act of the original. It kind of even makes it easier to recommend a double feature watch to friends who might fundamentally reject films like the 2022 original. I’m American, and though I love the impact of the original, I find this ending no less impactful. I wouldn’t describe it as “dumbed down” or even really “softened”, just different. I found it satisfying, but again, particularly in contrast and conversation with the original. I would never recommend only seeing the new one or seeing it first. Reading this as a sequel in fact intensified my experience of the central conceit about what is actually happening in this story. It almost made me want a SPEAK NO EVIL franchise or anthology series; or at least one more, with a Black couple and a kid with a rabbit doll, directed by Jordan Peele. If you’ve seen both films and read this far, you hopefully know what I’m talking about.

I watched the original just before I went to see the remake. While the remake family make their own fair share of unwise choices, they look like tactical geniuses compared to the utterly useless family in the original. I do think they're both solid movies, with the original being the more sinister and disturbing of the two. I understand the complaints of the remake "sanitizing" the disturbing ending of the original to make it more palatable for Americans, but the ending of the original also hinges in the parents being so unbelievably useless and not even attempting to defend themselves or their daughter. It honestly takes me out of it and leaves me more frustrated than anything else. And again, I understand the original is meant as "cultural commentary" specific to Denmark. For other people who come from more assertive cultures though, it's hard for that ending not to be more ridiculous than thought provoking. I'm actually just fine with the remake serving as a sort of what if scenario for how things could have played out if the family from the original had actually made an attempt to fight back. And if you desperately need your movies to be bleak and nihilistic above all else, the original is still there for you to watch.

This movie highlights how some humans on earth are just not fighters. In modern times we have a new idea of toughness compared to how it was in the past. For example, the toughest guy I know one day told me he has never been in a fight his whole life. he said he never had a reason to as he intimidated everyone into his role. Modern day tough guys who never even fought a fist fight is how I look at this movie. Myself, I have been in many fights, some close to death though I am no soldier. But man did this movie destroy my fight mechanism. I was yelling at the screen and felt sick afterwards!

When the director of the original film was asked his motivation for making it, he replied that his goal was for people to react to the film, that he didn't care so much about anything else. That he wanted to be remembered, that was his motivation. Excuse me but that reminds me of Serbian film. Why make a provocative film? There are two decisions that I cannot forgive the original movie. *Spoilers: The first is the rabbit, the second is that after having an unpleasant encounter with the antagonist, a bad dinner and a violation of her privacy in the bathroom, the woman decides to have sexual relations with her husband. A WOMAN COULD NEVER DO OR WANT THAT. The final scene is unnecessary from the daughter to the stones. Personally, I am very excited about the remake. I'm a fan of Mcavoy and Eden lake

Both movies have the same rating on Letterboxd. I'm intrigued. I have seen the original and saw absolutely no need for telling this same story again. But the positive reception of the remake definitely intrigues me

Ok, here’s my question - which do I watch FIRST? Which order would yield the most additive thrills/emotion? It sounds like the remake should be experienced first, because the original would then layer on more depth and disturbing detail. I’m the kind of person who likes watching the movie first, then reading the book because it’s invariably deeper. The reverse order just makes the second thing a more shallow experience.

I'd actually recommend the original first - it's a slower build and the first two acts are very similar. Then the remake for a kind of 'alternate version.'

Watched them both this week. I liked the original though I wish it "said" a bit more. Still, a very well executed and chilling movie. I can't say I have anything good to say about the remake. The first hour lacked the black comedy that made the first one work for the first hour, and while I accept that a lot of changes would be made, I hated the third act of the new one and how clean it was on every front. But I'm glad the remake got me to finally watch the original.

Good thing I avoided the trailers as much as I possibly could. Even watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last week and didn't have the trailer played before watching the movie as I knew that horror movies from Blumhouse these days haven't been really that good in making trailers for some reason

Thank you for this review and comparison. I'm usually annoyed when international movies are remade by the Hollywood machine because they typically do nothing with the plot or have it be transformative in any way. It comes off like a lazy ripoff for a quick buck. I'd rather just watch the original since subtitles don't bother me. It is nice to hear that the remake exists because the original is too disturbing for most mainstream audiences. I'll probably give both a shot, just not back-to-back

The remake is so bad, so watered down, they copy the whole movie literally the whole movie then don’t have the balls to execute the jaw dropping and absolutely disturbing ending.

The problem with this remake is that it was absolutely not needed and only spoiled the original through it absolutely AWFUL trailer. I do believe the cast is talented, the director very capable but it's simply a lesser version of the orignal that came out 2 years ago... One criticism I often see for the original is how 'stupid' the family was and how unbelievable that made the movie which I think is so unfortunate - People (american audience ? don't know) projected their experience as a viewer on the movie's character. You as an audience member knew from the get go this would get ugly, you were on the edge of your seat anticipating the big crescendo, the clichéd torture porn scenes etc.. that basically 'almost' never came. The characters in the movie aren't experiencing their journey from that perspective at all and that's a major difference. They are undergoing a series of awkward unpleasant moments that, in a vacuum, mean very little! Plus they are already depicted as passive and willing to endure for the sake of being polite as a very Danish cultural trait heavily put forward by the Danish director (that was the whole 'point' of the movie). Needing a remake where the family meets a happier vengeful ending totally discredits the experience from my point of view.

I’m American, and I totally got that from the original … maybe because I’m a people pleaser, so I could understand where they were coming from in wanting to remain polite. 😆 Knowing they changed the ending on this remake was such a bummer because I think it made it stand out from a lot of other movies that always have a “final girl” or happier ending. That’s the reason I only watched it once a year ago and didn’t revisit because it was that disturbing. 🥴

@@KrystleLovesHorror Yeah, I realise my 'American' comment may be misunderstood as a jab towards a whole nation, not intended that way, probably should have said 'Hollywood' instead hehe. I saw the original as a movie fest in a sold out room (have been attending that fest for 25 years) and I have never seen such an impact on the crowd - dead silent coming out of the room, nobody talked, everybody was just shocked. It was awesome to experience it in a large group setting :)

I don't get any of the hate. I saw it in a theater full of people that saw it as an amazing dark comedy. The audience was laughing in stitches and clapped and cheered when it was done. My friends and I plan to see it again ASAP. I guess it came down to expectations - we didn't want a strictly dark and serious thriller, we wanted to laugh at the idiot nature of one character in particular, and McAvoy's both verbal and non-verbal rage.

This is interesting because I really enjoyed the first two acts of the original and did not enjoy the disturbing ending… As much as I hate the idea of remaking foreign films, maybe I would prefer this… Although I mostly enjoyed it for the comedy which you haven’t spoken much about here. Would you say the new film delivers the awkward comedy that the original does?

Both good. The original is super bleak; but it has a great shock twist at the ending which really sucker punches you. And the new version doesn't have that great ending. But it's more entertaining overall. And James McAvoy is a highlight of the new version.

I thought it was fun that the remake follows the same story beats but is basically the polar opposite. So if you want a more depression experience, watch the original. If you want something slightly more uplifting and entertaining, watch the remake. Personally, I prefer the original but my friends liked having the family live so they preferred the remake. I wish the couple was a little nicer in the remake. They were such assholes I was rooting for them to die so when they didn't, I was pretty sad.

Turn it in. If a person has seen the original, liked it and had been affected by it, the remake is a totally inferior film. They've missed out so much of the brooding build. Pissing in the bathroom, brushing teeth in the bathroom, Patrick looking through the window while they're having sex .... The latter is what gives the ultimate power to Agnes sleeping in the bed. The deeper exposition people are clinging to of the remake is laid on too thick (Child dies/brought up in a care home ... it's cheap) And the the ending is a sub par Straw Dogs rip that has none of the stone cold HORROR of the original. If i'd have never seen the original, the remake might be good.
