In this video, we take a close look & listen to the Wharfedale Linton speakers.
Kurt has gone down the technical path of audio, sometimes chasing technical perfection. When listening to them over time, he was charmed by their vintage sound that hearkens to his past audio systems.
While listening to these speaker we did a number of comparisons. Listening with the grills both installed, removed, and single grills installed. (Just to hear if they made a difference).
-From our listening, we recommend listening with the grill installed!-
Before you give us a hard time... Our filming team member shot all our B-Roll shots with a single grill installed... HAHA

@@ThousandThrills The Lintons are rated at 6 ohms however will dip down below 4. If you are thinking of matching it with the C700 it is stable at 4. You may want to consider moving up to something that uses N-core which is stable at lower ohms. This can be found in the Cambridge evo series, NAD M33(quite a large step up in price) and the upcoming NAD C399 which I can't wait to get my hands on! I really do like what KLH is doing these days and hope to a vid on the 5s soon. Take your time no rush as you will usually end up happier!

I have just got a pair of Lintons. They are by far the best speaker I have ever had. I have a very wide taste in music, from classical to jazz to chill to modern(ish) rock, and they have revealed details in the sound I never heard before. And that bass is PUNCHY and TIGHT !!! When a timpany drum roll is heard, you can hear each strike of the drum. Never heard that before in a speaker.

Everybody's different. I went from not very expensive Klipsch Towers , to Tannoy Revolution xt6f , to the Linton's. 🔉😊 . When I first heard them and my smallish living room I knew I liked them. It was kind of like I'm home now .lol. some people mentioned the highs were a little grainy. I noticed it. But it sure isn't awful , and you have to be listening for it. I took Mike's advice from Germany on KZbin about replacing a couple capacitors and a couple resistors. Well I did it. Ordered the parts and they came to my house. I think all four pieces were about $14. A friend of mine that has a lot of knowledge with Electronics unsoldered the 4 old and out in the 4 new parts. Well wow ! I could tell her immediately it was more detailed. So it wasn't the speaker , it's the crossover. A speaker manufacturer cannot put the best parts in every speaker. No one would buy the more high-end models if they did. Why spend $4,000 but I can get one that sounds as good for $1499 . But if you can do a little tweak like this it will make it sounds a lot closer to the big boys. And there are other KZbin guys that show you crossover replacements for the Linton. Hell you might not want to ever buy another speaker ! Powering mine with a Primaluna Prologue Integrated w/ twin SVS sb 1000's . I'm only at about 45 watts or so , and yeah it can sound like you're in the club 🔉 . I say the Linton's pack a punch , sound ! Looks ! Build ! And dual exhaust ! Yeah baby !🎛

Not an audiophile, so not always understand the meaning (sorry for that) of all the specific words, just a guy who loves music and would enjoy to get the best out of his investment in this hobby. Unfortunately there are no options to buy the KLH model five in Chile, so I guess I’ll go try the Linton’s with my own C700. What would you think on positioning of the Linton’s? @@germansamuilov3837 if possible try to keep the speakers 10 inches from wall. The speakers have two rear ports so if you can go even further it will help! Since you have a large room it will help as that is a lot of space to fill.

I was talking to a friend of mine who was building two systems last year. He said he wanted something with more "grit" and something that was more "studio sounding" as he was also a pretty known musician. We had a really good chat on why he felt it was necessary to do two completely opposite sounding systems. At the end of the day it really becomes personal preference and can appreciate both sides.

A square room is always a little tough. The good news in a 10x10(9ft ceiling) room your main problematic frequencies is @ 170hz and 425hz. With the frequency response of these speakers, you should be ok with careful positioning. If your positioning is limited go with the Dentons as it will be more flexible. Also in a smaller room, the Dentons will be easier to place for soundstage if that is important to you.

Yup, we mentioned both in the video and in the description that the grills be left on. It reduces the amount of reflections from the front of the cabinet. We tried the speakers/tweeters in both positions. In our situation, it worked better on the outside as the soundstage was a tad bit larger and speakers disappeared more. In our situation it worked better as our first reflection points are treated and having the tweeters positioned inwards in most cases would work better for 90% rooms that are not...I have built many studios in the past and usually use PMC for example the two two and ib2s which the tweeters are offset. Depending on setup the engineers choose how to position the speakers tweeter offset....I do THANK YOU for bringing it up as I should have covered it as I may have sent the wrong message when people saw the setup.

It's not gona measure the best...well quite the opposite, check Erin's
@Hifyed
@Hifyed 2 жыл бұрын
It does measure quite well and is tuned(frequency-wise) similar to other speakers at the same price. It was one of our first videos and I think I may have been a little too critical, especially during that time I have finished up a few studios that were designed to be ultra-linear with as perfect phasing as possible. With that being said frequency response is not the only measurement(so many factors). One is distortion/harmonics which is present and purposeful in this speaker. That is what really stood out to me and is the same reason why people love it. It brings character and perception of warmth to the speaker.

@@Hifyed Check again Erin's measurements, distortion is very decent. Why not just admit that your ears are not perfect :-) That's why measurements exist
@Hifyed
@Hifyed 2 жыл бұрын
@@antoniomarsicola8608 I believe in measurements and the reason why we started doing so. I have worked for many hi-fi manufacturers and it is a must to include an objective approach when designing speakers. And looking at the measurements which I also found on alpha audio it stated "What does stand out - and maybe that’s where the ‘direct’ midrage originates from - is the 3rd harmonic around 1500 Hz. That one hits almost 1%. The warmth we experience is visible at 50 Hz where we see a dominant 2nd harmonic This is what gives the Lintons that sense of "warmth" and "magic" that draws people to these speakers. I DON"T claim to have perfect ears however it's pretty clear looking at it both subjectively and objectively their design intentions.

@antoniomarsicola8608 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hifyed so you want to tell me that you were not able to identify the tonality of the speaker (you thought it was not linear while data says it's very linear) but still you can hear the level of distortion, which is much more difficult according to psychoacoustics. Maybe you have superpowers... Now before replying again with other ingenuities, you should read the papers from Floyd Toole and Sean Olive, they will explain you that it is well proven distortion is much much less understandable by human perception than on-axis linearity and directivity. I suggest have a look at objective measurements before posting your next subjective review :-) Or start measuring, even a hundred buck microphone can tell you a lot of mid to high frequency linearity

😂This is what keeps audio interesting! Hopefully your not getting upset. As mentioned in my first response "It does measure well". It was my fault for putting my studio hat on as it was one of our first videos. In the studio world based on objective measurements would not fly. This does not mean that in the home audio world it is not considered good and I admit it was my mistake. I should have known better not to compare speakers that are for studio use. I'm glad you brought this up. Psychoacoustics and the polarization between subject vs objective have always been an interesting debate. I have many friends who are engineers in the industry and one of them worked with Floyd and Sean as he was one of the chief engineers at Harman. I also have the other side of friends that work in the industry and only believe that products should be designed subjectively. This would be an interesting roundtable!

You set up the speakers the wrong way round! These are left and right pairs and you had it mixed up. Tweeter on the inside! And you run a review channel? 😭

I'm just going to copy and paste from a previous comment. It seems like we have another audio police 😉 Yup, we mentioned both in the video and in the description that the grills be left on. Depending on setup the engineers choose how to position the speakers tweeter offset....I do THANK YOU for bringing it up as I should have covered it as I may have sent the wrong message when people see the setup.

Average speakers at best. By the KLH 5. Twice as good. I did a side by side. Don't listen to this BS.

As mentioned at the start of the review the Lintons are not my cup of tea. Working in the industry my whole working life both in hi-fi and building studios my ears have leaned towards the more technically accurate sound when it comes to phasing linearity etc. So the Lintons don't fit my bill but I understand why so many people like them. I'm currently listening to the KLH 5 and it suits my taste more but it's not just what I think. You think it's twice as good but I guarantee others won't. That's the problem with this industry it's so polarized on what they think sounds better,, subjective vs objective, brand A is so much better than brand B, neutral vs scooped etc. etc. Like yourself you just want to tell people otherwise.That's the real BS!!! If the products you choose make you listen to more music that's the goal.

If you just say a speaker is horrible, without giving any reasons, your statement is meaningless. There's nothing backing it up. Make your case.
