Speaker Quick Repair techniques - Easy - Strange Buzzing Sounds

So my 300 watt sub started making these strange buzzing sounds a while ago, and just got worse and worse. I was about to chuck it out, but I decided to have a quick look at it and see if there was anything I could do to try and fix it... I haven't had any problems with it ever since...

My Vintage 6 inch speaker is doing the same thing.Playing frequencies around 30hz is fine,until i go to 60-70 hz,its starts rattling.Can i use compress air for this?

How did dust get behind the dust cap? How do bugs get inside sealed light fittings ? Maybe there was a houdini bug buzzing around your speaker ? Every time i pull something apart not find a fault but it works after reassembled , it bugs me . Well done , helpful

It's not anything in the woofer but instead it is the coil itself. On older woofers or woofers which have been in the elements the coil will very slightly expand or warp and cause coil rub. If this happens you will need to reconnect and/or recoil the woofer or buy a replacement woofer.

Another reason can be the stamped steel basket is bent or the motor shifted on the frame from the speaker getting dropped and recentering the pole by tapping the top plate with a hammer has fixed this issue for me in the past.

I know this is old but could be the spider has partially separated from the cone and the speaker is no longer moving straight in and out causing the rub especially in certain orientations due to gravity. Check the spider where it meets the cone.

in speaker test, it doesn't make any strange sounds, but, if you listen to music, watch movies (some parts of the movie score) or do the THX test, on lower frequency sounds it makes crackling/buzzing sound.

I would say flip it over and play it, and if that doesn’t fix it, recenter it and replace the spider and possibly surround

I have a pair of 10 inch subs in my room, when I play low frequencies one speaker makes a clicking noise when I push down on the cone it makes a squeaking noise, it just started today.

I think I have the same problem with my z2300 satellite speaker as the high end frequencies I’m don’t really come through anymore as it is super old and there’s probably a bunch of dust and shit inside it, as the middle part is just a metal cone shaped piece and there isn’t anything protecting the voicecoil

Wd 14? If you think of using wd 40 i wouldn't recommend it since it can damage plastic and make a mess, maybe it can lubricate for a bit but i wouldn't recommend it. Better solutions are the ones in the video or use silicone based lubricant.

I've used white lithium grease it's non conductive so It lubes up the coil I'm not sure the long term effects but I've used it on car subwoofers to limp them around but none of them were mine 😂

Next time that noise starts up, you can just remove the driver, then turn it over and smack the magnet real hard with the biggest hammer you can find. The sudden shock combined with gravity will knock the debris out of the slot in the motor and free up the voice coil and allow it to center itself. Don't worry about harming the magnet, it's very durable. However there is no problem if the magnet shatters into pieces because like you said- It's a piece of shit driver anyway. Then you can buy a real loud $5.00 Pyle sub-woofer to replace it as an upgrade mod that will impress your friends.

the same happens to mine , its an M-Audio av40 it buzzes when there are low freq sounds buy it buzzes louder and the sound it makes it is at a higher pitch.. dont buy Av40 by M-Audio, they are shit. also overheats after like 30 mins

Check the spider. The fabric often looses its “bounce” . The ability of the spider to return the cone to zero from + - displacement has been reduced. I have rejuvenated many speakers by spraying the fabric spider and Cambriic surround with a flexible quick drying glue. Not too solvent based or you can unglue the speaker. Try Holts dampstart which is a spray for car HT leads. Go easy. Experiment on little speakers first. Good luck.
