There are many other Filipino words that are only of Spanish in orgin. We have basura, kalye, bentana, silya, kusina, mesa, kutsilyo, to name but a few. Even the Filipino words for grandfather and grandmother are of Spanish deriviation: (Spanish) abuelo/abuela ==> (Tagalog) lolo/lola. So for Filipinos, it is not that difficult to learn Spanish, all one has to do is to remember the Filipino words.

Quick side note: all Spanish speaking countries in the Americas and outside of Spain speak Castilian Spanish. Castilian refers to the language spoken in the region of Castile, however there are other Spanish languages in Spain that are just not as “popular,” for example Aragonese and Asturian, and technically Ladino as well, though unlike the previous two this one is no longer spoken in the Iberian peninsula. All of these are Spanish dialects, Castilian is just another. A languages, after all, is just a dialect with a bigger “army.” On that note, the reason Castilian Spanish is referred to simply as Spanish is because during the reunification of Spain, the Kingdom of Castile became the more culturally dominant of the bunch, and so it’s language became a Lingua Franca for Spain. For that reason, when the conquests of the Americas occurred, that was the Spanish dialect that was brought over.

BUT when I say S, it sounds more like "sc/sce/ce" as in conSCIenCE, SCienCE or presenCE. It's more like gently whistling shh through your teeth, if that makes sense? My family is from Salamanca.

@bobcasas1
@bobcasas1 3 жыл бұрын
Great video on pronunciations, but it perpetuates the myth that Castilian and Spanish are two different languages. They are not. Castilian is the official language of all the Spanish speaking world, although there are other languages, like Basque, Catalan, etc., which are totally different than Castilian. The myth conflates Castilian pronunciation in Spain, and Castilian pronunciation in say, Latin America, as being "Castilian Spanish" in the former, and "Other Spanish" in the latter. This is incorrect. "Spanish" as we know it, and "Castilian" are synonymous. In fact, the word "Español" meant only a "Spaniard" in the official Royal Spanish Academy until around 1920. The language we know today as Spanish was only officially called Castilian (Castellano) before then, and it meant the language of all the Spanish speaking world. "Español" crept into the Castilian vocabulary because of the influence of Spanish Speaking citizens of Anglo countries, particularly the US. Also, the word "Español" became the standard in Puerto Rico, because of the US influence. Argentina and other Latin American countries still use the word "Castellano" when they name their official language. I know I will get a lot of push-back for this, because this myth is probably one of the most deeply rooted myths that exist about languages.

Pursuers try to get him to betray himself with a tongue twister, hoping he will lapse into that 'th' sound. I have created: Les gustan seis senores de Ponticiellas, siete senoritas de Cigales. Does that work? Les gustan SEis SEnores de PontiCIellas, SIete SEnoritas de CIgales. I have capitalized what I believe would be a ‘th’ sound.

What is a difference between Spanish and Castilian spanish
@bobcasas1
@bobcasas1 3 жыл бұрын
None - The names are synonyms of the same language. Those who say otherwise are perpetuating a noxious myth. There is a world of difference between say, Castilian and Catalan, or Castilian and Basque. But Castilian is spoken in both Spain and Latin America (and other countries, like the Canaries). The confusion exists because of Spaniards and other Spanish speaking countries have subtle different pronunciations of the same words. Also, there are several colloquialisms and slang words that differ. But there is only ONE official Spanish Common language, Castilian (or if you prefer, "Spanish"). Also, there is a difference between "Spanish" and "Languages of Spain". It would be incorrect to say that Aragonese, Basque, etc are the Spanish Language. They are languages of Spain. Ask a latin American if he/she speaks Castilian, and most of them will respond affirmatively. However, in Puerto Rico and other parts of latin america, because of the US influence, they will respond that they speak ""Español". Hispanic-American also strongly believe the myth.
