My nine year old son wants to start learning Ukrainian with me. He is really struggling with the rolled "R's". I asked my wife how she learned to roll "R's". To my surprise, she can't either. I've been a Spanish speaker since I was nine years old, and I guess I just took the skill for granted. I have since come to learn that many native English speakers struggle with it. I told my son that I like to bunch my tongue up in the back of my mouth and just touch the edge of the concave roof of my mouth with the edge of my tongue while cupping it too. Then it is just a matter of figuring out how to balance the pressure from your exhale vs. the resistance you offer with your tongue. He's getting it. He also struggled with learning what sound "И" makes. He knows how to pronounce and spell words like "visit" and "benefit". I asked him if the first and second syllables of each sound the same. Nope! the letter "И" is what that is about because the Cyrillic alphabet is phonetic. Once he understood that each letter only makes one sound, it made sense to him! He says he likes the Ukrainian alphabet more than the one we use in English because it makes more sense. Me too!!!

This was fun to watch you, Inna, it reminded me of my childhood. When I was a child, my Dad told me to gently place the tip of my tongue loosely behind my top teeth first, with my mouth slightly open like a small smile shape, and with it in position there, try to make it vibrate by breathing air quickly past it; over the top of it... Then add the vocal sound after I'd mastered the vibrating tongue part. It worked really well and I was the coolest child in my village! My Dad always struggled with 2 English words. As a child it made me laugh. 'Bath' and 'Bus' because Ukrainian doesn't have the th sound... it took me ages to figure out if he was going out somewhere, or going for a wash)) The tongue twisters caught me out because I got distracted, wondering what they translate into.

I'm from western Sweden. Our R is pretty strong, except if it stands in front of certain other consonants, like d, s and t, in which case it "melts" together with them. I don't know much about Slavic languages, but I see that 'rs' in Czech is pronounced in principle like in most Swedish dialects. It's a bit harder for Germans to pronounce R like in most Slavic or Roman languages, since they don't use the tip of the tongue except in some dialects. But the hardest among people with a Germanic native tongue seems to be for people speaking English as their first language.

Can you do the letter Ґ i can't seem to understand it cause it sounds like a G but there's also a Г which is also a G like in Russians
@robertjenkins61322 жыл бұрын
I can produce the [r] sound out of context, but it sometimes doesn't sound that good. It's like hitting a dart board: sometimes it hits dead center and sounds nice, sometimes it's "off," like I misfire and produce some other rhotic consonant [ɾ, ɹ, ʀ(too far back)]. But I very often get it right even with the occasional misfires. However, when I try to do flowing speech (instead of just out-of-context [r] practice), my L1 phonetics assert themselves and I often pronounce either single-tap [ɾ] or English [ɹ], instead of trilled [r]. I wonder if it even matters all that much. If a Ukrainian speaking English pronounces a trilled [r] instead of English [ɹ], I might perceive them as having a slight accent, but I can still understand them OK. I think it's impossible for me to have zero accent. Mainly, I want to be understood.

Your lectures are excellent, Inna. You are going to seduce me to learn a language I was not even aware of some months ago. My mother tongue is German, so I don´t have problems with pronouncing "R". I had French at school. I was good at it, but that´s 20 years ago and I don´t know any French people. At least, I can read it. I have sympathy for your and Ukrainian issues, that´s why I found your channel. At the moment, the future is disguised, but at first I have to become fit (I told you about the health camp I was admitted to) and then I will take a course at your online school into consideration. Stay strong, Inna. I hope that you will be reunited with your husband soon. NATO has a lot of possibilities to defeat Russia, but for some reason, they are afraid of using their own doctrine. Low yield nukes with nearly no fallout would be ideal to attack Russian command posts and GRAD launchers. The advantage over new generation nukes compared to just delivering conventional weapons consists of no masses of unexploded bombs (or ammo), less loss of Ukrainian soldiers and a quick victory. I´m not afraid of WW3, I will die anyway. Regarding my belief, the world ends individually for each human, when he finally encounters Jesus. We just have this biological experience for a reason I can´t fathom. But at least I try to make the best out of it. Thank you for your videos and stay safe, Inna ! If you know a woman or a widow about your age, with or without children, please tell me because I´m 42 and I´m still not married. In this case, I would have no other choice than to learn Ukrainian. My country sucks, I want to leave anyway. I want a country I believe in. So I end my contribution with "Slava Ukraini", hoping to become a member of the club. Kind regards and sorry for writing too much, Mathew from Austria
