Get high quality smaller bolt cutters, then get two pieces of steel tubing that will fit over the handles of the bolt cutters. If you want to do it up deluxe, drill holes in the handles and tubes so you can put a nail or other item in the holes to secure the pipe in position on the handle. You want the higher quality bolt cutter because it will have better cutting surfaces. The pipes will extend the handles to twice their length and give you a lot more leverage. If you try the extra leverage with cheap bolt cutters, you will quickly damage the cutting surfaces of the jaws, making them useless.
@Spacenoidx Жыл бұрын
You need the cutting subject to fit in the jaws though -- too small, and they won't.
@SnackPack9132 жыл бұрын
In one of my engineering courses we looked at the mechanical force amplification from a bolt cutter mechanism and vice grips. If it wasn’t for the tolerances causing imperfections from having to actually build it in real life, theoretically you can amplify your input force infinitely (but not in real life obviously). You can take over the world with those damn things

so what kinda mechanical advantage did they end up saying it gave you? like what kind of force do they provide, relative to something else? just curious if there was anything else cool that you learned about em in that course. cheers : )
@SnackPack9132 жыл бұрын
@@dylanzrim3635 if you boil it down yeah. But for the vice grips which is the simplest case it’s a four bar linkage that you lock out into a truss, a triangle, and the effective lever goes off to infinity as that crank angle to coupler approaches 180. The bolt cutters or the jaws of life is a more complicated linkage with more links that also take in input power and amplify it in impressive ways. The jaws of life are insane, they use a hydraulic actuator as an input force of thousands of pounds and amplify it in a similar manner through the mechanism (which get more complicated than a super basic lever and fulcrum)

Israel's like your silly dad ready with endless puns while Cameron's the cool uncle/your dad's cool bro. Also, Cam mentioned something that I didn't really expect from the military. It's how simple the mindset is. Like if the mechanical breaching doesn't work, it doesn't work, get to the next level right away. I learned some few stuff from both Cameron and Israel the realism of military games and it allows me to differentiate the game elements from the realism elements much better. Appreciating the game logic part with its limitations and at the same time having some idea of how it would be realistically.

back during my conscription days, there was this locker we found in the bunks which was used by some guy who left the army years ago, and the lock on the door was this big ass master lock of the same type that we used for the armskote. we had to get the locker open in a hurry that day because of an audit, so we brought over the bolt cutters from the storeroom. i was pretty fit back then so i was doing that thing where you pull the cutters towards your body, and i managed to bend the arms of the cutter and the blades became concave, but there wasnt a damn mark on the lock.

In my experience a pair of rigid bolt cutters is the way to go. Length depends application, but if you’re going to need to use them a lot go bigger. In the military you have to carry them around so length becomes a consideration as they get a little heavy and cumbersome. I work with a lot of sealed trailers and shipping containers in my job and my coworkers have to cut bolts daily. We lost one of our cutters so the maintenance manager ran down to lowes and bought a cobalt brand pair. They looked very nice but they totally sucked, metal was weak and the jaws deformed immediately. Funny thing is we found the old rigid ones later and now that’s all we use. We probably have about ten laying around, and they’re kind of ugly but they still work every time. If you get a really thick bolt you’re better off using a grinder to cut it IMO. Also be sure to wear eye pro when cutting, I’ve seen plenty of these things spark or send the link flying.

takeaway the rubber handle and carry 2 more short water pipe as handle extensions and you are good to go. construction workers know that trick. this is also a international standard of "persuasive tool", from military to mafia. you put a finger into the jaws, the finger talks, and talk quick. in this scenario, a $20 cheap one will do the job.
