My favorite mission was when my team got deployed to a place in Afghanistan to supplement a Seal team as their EOD unit. We were there for SVIEDs only for there to be little to no cars, and no svieds. We ultimately ended up being a force multiplier for the Seals pulling security for whatever they were doing. I wouldn’t say it was boring, because I mean your still doing important stuff for important people but nonetheless, no one got to play with explosives.

Having ridden in an Osprey during my military service my advise to NZ keep your C-130 fleet well maintained and invest in helicopters instead. When Christchurch had that devastating earthquake sometime ago the Osprey would have been useless, at the time I was working in the Critical Disaster/Mutual Aid Response Occuptaion and was part of a urban disaster SAR/R element. We flew in on three C-130's and were using every helicopter we could get our hands on to aid in lifeflight extraction of the critically wounded. This is were a helicopter outshines the Osprey big time. It's just a more stable and versatile platform than the Osprey is.

If you can serve again what branch or would you gi the spy route, be a PMC, or serving your community being a First Responder?
@jericho1-4
@jericho1-4 Жыл бұрын
Believe it or not there are a decent amount of former military in the first responder occupations, mostly firemen and Para's/EMT's and of course some LEO's but not as many as most people seem to think. Now the critical disaster/mutual aid response field is chalk full of former military, everything from engineers to hotshot Specialized SAR/R to medical and humanitarian aid. Being a retired 0321 w/FORECON and having gotten sent to Ukraine under my employers UN contract I and the others who went got asked by a lot of Vets what the situation was like over there when we got back. The answer is shocking to most, while the Russian forces are merciless on civilians and civilian based structures like homes apartment tenements stores and the like so to are the Ukrainians. A lot of the Ukrainian Frontline units were very poorly equipped in the first six to eight months while I was there and while we were trying to evac civilians from an area where a fight was going to soon break out they were less than helpful making sure the civilians got out of harms way before the Russians started tossing arty rounds in the area. Mostly the places we are sent has been struck by some kind of natural disaster like a wildfire hurricane tornado earthquake or even a volcanic eruption not a war zone. And the people regardless if it is a war zone or not truly appreciate us being there helping them in any way you can not only during some of there darkest hours but also their hours when they need help the most. It's a very rewarding career though like any other similar occupations does have its dark moments. One of the hardest things is standing by feeling hopeless while a grief counselor tells NOk that their loved one didn't make it, it's both depressing and motivational at the same time cause the last thing you want is to give the next family bad news.

Yes Izzy, both you and Cam are starting to sound like broken records; not your fault, its the questions’ fault. 😅 Fortunately, I got a good question to help mix things up: If you had to face some kind of hostile force, without knowing what they are or what they can do, without any conventional firearms 😱, what weapons and/or equipment would you want to use? I am a huge Hitman fan, and sometimes in the game you are forbidden from using firearms so you have to use literally anything else. There was one time where I had to infiltrate a Japanese mountain resort and the only weapon that was available to me was a katana; it was helpful in killing guys quietly, but eventually I ditched it for a frying pan. 😁 Needless to say, you had to be there!

Not trying to be critical but that's not really a good question to ask people who've been trained by the military, especially the US military. Shooters are trained to well... shoot. A knife is part of a person's kit but it's honestly a weapon of last resort. Some combatives and hand to hand combat are taught but if you have anything to do with being light infantry, you're trained and taught to create space then shoot. Also, switching to your secondary is quicker than reloading and can save your life. That last piece advice actually saved my life on a few occasions while somewhere in the Middle East.

If I'm going CQB like you I want an SMG, but I'd go for something a little more modern. A lot of people who have never shot the P-90 throw a lot of shade it's way, but it's a reliable and accurate platform. Then there's the trust MP-5 or even the UMP, though the UMP does have a tad slower rate of fire over the grease gun or a Thompson even it's still a damn good platform. For MBR I'd go with an M-14 or DMR like the M-110 to be honest. All that being said any operation requires one to dig into the tool box and take what's needed to get the job done and if I have to go with an M-4/M-16 I'm definitely snatching an AK and ammo off a bad guy and inspecting it if it's in good working order it's going with me if not it's getting stripped and FUBAR'd. It's always good to have a back up just in case.
