I know you would like that answered, I know vets and I've asked them that I recommend not asking from what I've heard and seen it makes them relive it and it doesn't help because its like thinking of something eg a dog and you start thinking of dogs. if you ask them that it starts that ball and then goes down. if they answer this its fine its up to them its just some advice I've picked up over the years. I know it sounds sad but I'm not saying don't do it, I'm saying because I know that for most vets I know it doesn't help them and it can make it worse. that's why most I know only tell war storys when they have had a few to drink.

The food in Syria was dope. Where we were, some Syrian dudes just rolled up, pointed to a random bombed out building, and said they were building a restaurant. When it came to leadership, I learned that the more I tried to run from being the leader, the more I got pushed into the damn position. I mean, I turned out to be a great leader, or so I've been told, but if I am, it's only because I have a great team. When I was given a squad for the first time, I straight up said to them "look guys, I didn't want this. I'm not trying to lead anyone. But here we are and now I gotta tell you guys what to do. So look, if you have a better idea than me, I want you to speak up. I can't be expected to figure everything out on my first day, or even my first year. We're already a good team, and that's because we communicate, we watch each others sixes. Let's keep doing that, and maybe we'll survive long enough to find someone better to be leader." Apparently, it worked. we didn't lose a single man, and I got everyone home alive. Jesus, I still remember that speech word for word. I can't even remember my birthday most days!

As far as the first answer goes: the lack of interpersonal communication and social skills is a severe marr on our educational system as well as our society in general. We don't seem to have a singular cohesive culture in our country which has bred severe division within our own population. People now have more value in their cyber-friendships than any of the relationships with people in their specific area. That can be good for people who would have difficulty in most social settings, but we are literally training EVERYONE to value these online "friends" (regardless of their cultural norms or moral structure) more than individuals they encounter in person. That has a huge impact on how they interact and treat others because they ONLY ever receive positive reinforcement, regardless of how deplorable or repugnant their behavior.

We had one guy, last name of Roy, who literally looked like he was 12. Short as hell, boyish features, and his blond hair matched his skin colors so it looked like he didn't have armpit or chest hair or anything. We started calling him "Little Boy Roy". It stuck. Another guy, shipped to basic as a Specialist because he utilized the Army's Stripes for Buddies program enough times. The drill sergeants nicknamed him "Special Lips", a play on Specialist. Then there was a guy, poor kid was an idiot. Zero common sense and very little book smarts or street smarts. We gave him a "hostile naming" (where we pick your name against your will) and we nicknamed him Plant because the joke was that he was dumber than the average houseplant.

Situational awareness is huge in all branches of the military. Our CO would also tell us to "keep our heads on a swivel" meaning to be cognizant of your surroundings, where you are, what is around you, nearest safe areas, nearest exit etc... It's like driving a car and always knowing if there is a vehicle behind you and to each side of you just in case you need to swerve or make quick adjustments. Sitting in a restaurant and facing the exits is another big one and is apart of situational awareness. Situational awareness when handling firearms definitely. Knowing your supplies and what you have of what. Kind of like always doing inventory. People watching. Looking at someone, sizing them up and making quick mental judgements about them like characteristics i.e. Suspicious looking, can you take them in a fight, pre-judging their personality, and making judgements about their emotional and mental state by observing their actions and how they hold themselves. Basically people reading. I've gotten pretty good at making snap judgements about people based off certain criteria and characteristics. When I say "judge" I mean take into account all of what you see and put them in a box just for starters but be ready to make changes on the fly if need be.

I agree the most important life lesson takeaway from LRSD is Situational Awareness supported by the mantras “Head On A Swivel!” & “Attention To Detail” In Recce we logged and even drew out everything in a journal; all information is Intel and small details can be significant later. It’s a skill that I’ve taught my family and my Scout Troop over the years. I think kids these days have too many distractions and it’s affecting their ability to focus; without focus you lose the ability to plan and without planning you cannot execute and are forced to constantly improvise adapt and overcome which is another great skill but should always be a backup skillset for when the plan breaks down.
