WRONG!!! An “at risk” student is simply a student who is under a certain percentile of the district standards assessments!

I bet you wish it was as simple as that. Unfortunately, there are MANY FACTORS that put a child "at risk". And, if you research the definition you will see a number of descriptions much different than the one you provide. I often ask this question on interviews. Anytime a prospective teacher that gives such as baseline answer as the one provided, it let's me know they are unprepared to deal with "at risk" students. Such a shame!

There are better ways to tell someone that you think they are wrong. Those who become rude and obnoxious behind the computer should work on their interpersonal skills. Certainly, before they work with special education children.

@@TeachingsinEducation Actually she's right. That is the correct definition of an at risk student. An at risk student is a student who is at risk of dropping out or failing school. That's what you're taught in the curriculum for special education. If you turned down someone for giving "such a baseline answer" you'd be turning them down for giving the correct answer.

Gabriel Ruiz, when we ask this question on the interview committee, we look for heart and passion, not a baseline answer for the “textbook”. There is a scene in the movie the untouchables where Sean Connery asks for cadet what it means to be a cop? He was hoping for than a baseline answer as well. Watch the scene and maybe you’ll get my drift. Also, you don’t want to give short answers in an interview. Use your time to shine and expand on questions. The question should read what does an at risk student mean to YOU, specifically. I am not trying to be rude to you in anyway. I am just explaining what I would like to hear from a future special education teacher. Maybe some interview committees are lookin for baseline answers. I look for candidates to speak from the heart.
