1.08 when the ship enters the city with the awesome cloud/smoke rendering still holds up today. That scene is brilliant and I wish they could have shown how it was made.

Most likely a combination of effects with the static foreground/background shot of actual New York city, a really big & detailed model for the spaceship & use of smoke/clouds composited all together with CGI.

If you buy the past special editions on DVD or BluRay, they show you how they did that from the original behind the scenes feature special they made for the LaserDisc in 1997. Basically they had a huge water glass tank with the camera staged from the outside. They made an outline made from an iron pipe line up with individual holes to which would pump out colored paint to re-create a massive cloud. The gadget would move underwater towards the camera. BONUS: The shadow effect over the White House was done by a U-Haul backing up on the White House model, which would later be destroyed.

The clouds/smoke were done using cloud tank. With a phisical model destroyer ship and a backdrop of NY all composited together I believe.

@@japanesefolkstories811 The movie used a lot of miniatures and practical effects to pull off its massive scenes of destruction. But for the scene in which the aliens blow up the White House, CGI was used to combine the digital and practical effects, mixing old and new methods to pull off the most iconic shot of the movie.
