When I was in Afghanistan(09-10), because of where we were, we couldn't do any running for PT purposes. We lived in a small compound in a village and outside those walls was danger. However, we did dismounted missions everyday meaning walking with weight. Full kit with full packs. Long story short, when we got back to America, we immediately got a new company commander who did not deploy with us and he decided we needed to go on long run through the woods of north carolina. Needless to say we were all like wtf sir!!, we haven't run in a year. To our surprise we all smoked the 5+ mile run which can be directly attributed to the "rucking" we did daily in country.

Been training for the SEALS for over a year and got my contract recently. It’s 100% accurate that you HAVE to listen to your body and know that limit between sucking it up and pushing through and getting into that injury zone. Diet, stretching, foam rolling and sleep are just as important as training.

Just think of BUDS and the rest of the pipeline as if it is opiate withdrawal (heroin and oxycodone/percocets are opiates, for example). You have no choice but to push through if you want to be free, there is nothing else but the suck you have to push through and only focus on that, and focus on being strong and being happy that it sucks because you know you are growing from it, and more importantly going where you want to go in life. Find an excuse to win. I found my excuse to win and I've completed 8 exams and 2 entire subjects in my online school in the last 2 days. Needless to say, I don't have to sit down and read a bunch of bull shit for hours and hours that doesn't even matter, and I am getting 90% - 100% on all of my 20 question exams. I am getting closer and closer to getting to 75th Ranger Regiment. JUST FUCKING DO IT, SON

Although I think I need to take your advice about the stretching and sleep, I am not getting enough sleep for all the miles I ruck and all the weights I lift and exercises I do. I do ZERO stretching, something I need to start doing if I want my body to stay young. About the diet though, I can eat whatever I want 4,000+ calories per day and somehow I stay ripped and shredded. I can't gain any fat weight idk why. I am also about to be 27 years old and people think I am in 12th Grade high school. Hopefully that translates into old age and I actually end up living to be 150 years old due to some genetic abnormality. Anyways, I wish you the best bromosexual, don't you dare quit. You suck it up and you faint and fall flat on your face if you have to. They can't kick you out if you don't quit. If you wake up, pull yourself together, and keep going, they can't tell you shit and you will have everyone's respect whether they show it or not.

I started rucking fast and hard. I was super well trained in all aspects. After doing a 10k and 30k km ruck, i started blasting 50k km in bad weather and hard conditions. A month later i trained for running and the rucking had crushed my knees so bad that i have now tried to recover from inflammation in the knees in about a year. Inflammation is no joke, I probably had some major tears but I took a break in the summer without training and the inflammation and joints never recovered because I didn’t go to a doctor or therapy. I still can’t even train upper body with 100% commitment because the knees will get inflamed. I have had many major injuries but this is the worst. A great tip that I have discovered is in training you don’t want to preform, rather train to preform. There is no reason so max out all stats everyday, like taking unnecessary damage to your body or changing your pace just to hit a pr stat like a longer distance or a higher bench max. Rather hold the right pace and if you can’t keep up with your wanted goals yet, train so you can reach those goals without changing your workout or plan to hit them. Lower the the distance, lower the weight, lower the pause’s between sets, increase the reps. Don’t cheat yourself to look like you have better stats on paper. Train for the future not now.
@rfcdgaf

This is why most selection prep programs is a steady progression from slow to fast, peaking at the time when you be attending selection. If you overtrain you will cost yourself a LOT of time in recovery ...
@a48717

@@rfcdgaf it did, i don’t regret overtraining. It was valuable lesson. But I only have 3 months to get ready for selection, but my knees hasn’t recovered yet. I’m still not giving up, I’m getting better by the day. I will just lack in running and rucking, so I guess I have to tough it out when the day comes.

Had a real pride check this week. I made the decision to jump from 5 miles to 10 to 12 with 60 lbs(RASP btw). I did 10 just fine and 12 for the majority but at mile 9 my legs cramped and started spasing and I could no longer maintain my jog/shuffle pace. i felt overconfident that I could just bang out a 12 mile ruck run under 3 hours with extra weight. I’m glad that I’ve learned that no matter how tough I think I am, not being smart about preparation is a killer

Yo’ Buck! I just hit 10mi with a 7:28min/mi avg pace! So stoked. I feel like if you just take your rucks and your runs easy, 80-90% of the time, and just stay consistent, your improvements in both will compound to the other exercise. My rucking is pretty solid, my runs are definitely getting there, and I’m sure with some competition (I train lonesome dove) I can perform at an even higher rate. So stoked for SFAS.

Just went in March, Don’t underestimate strength training as well. I ran a powerlifting/strongman program before I went, helped a ton. Highly recommend incorporating heavy Yoke carries into your program as well, that was my biggest sustain from my train up. Don’t know why more people don’t recommend these. Also recommend Zercher squats & carries. Prioritize your health over everything, going in with nagging injuries will be massively detrimental. Once you get there, forget about what you did/didn’t do and just send it.

My dumbass was rucking 65lbs, 12 - 15m, with a 10lb dumbell, 2x per week and running ~20m per week, on top of crossfit and strength days. One day I walked into the gym to do squats and completely blew my back out, dropped the bar, and almost needed emergency surgery to use my dick. I was a week away from swearing in- 18x. Now it's been almost a year and I'm just starting to run again. Take Buck's advice and listen to your body.

100% Utah! 65lbs...pfft that's a quick route to medical. I have seen some pretty fit guys get their spirits destroyed by rucking. Most of rucking (or essentially long distance backpacking/thru-hiking) is eating shit. Know what is pain vs an injury and dealing with pain by keeping your brain focused on other things (pace, situational awareness, consciously hydrating, etc.). Your brain will eventually run on auto-pilot like any other repetitive training...just don't get complacent.

One of the things I have seen in a lot of books by coaches: The two hardest categories of people to convince of the value of rest are professional athletes and special operations. Running VS Rucking: A lot of genetics plays in. Rucking was easier for me and faster for me to adapt to than running. I agree that Rucking is better for most people to focus on. My DNA test actually confirmed that recently. That my muscles tend to slow, steady endurance performance. Yay science for figuring out something I worked out by trial and error 30 years ago. :) When I was at peak fitness, I generally weighed in at 180ish pounds at 5'10". Which helps when it comes to load bearing. I used to say: I can't outrun you, but I will walk you into the ground. Backing up what Buck said: Go test it out. Figure out what you need the most work on and focus on that. Another thing about Rucking is getting used to having weight on the shoulders. Build up the traps a bit. I don't have huge traps but I have enough that the strap on my ruck were not digging into my bones. The skinny people suffered a lot at first. Just some thoughts. Love the videos.

Hey Buck, I love all your content and it's truly inspired me. I was talking with a previous Ranger who went through SFAS (got injured and had to leave) and he was telling me the key to running for SFAS was to train your aerobic threshold (training at lower heart rate before you cross the anaerobic threshold). What are your thoughts on that and have you come across any decent training programs out there?

Rucking never hurt anything but my shins (humping the pig, M2, tripod, PRC 77 (yeah, I'm old), ammo cans... that's my happy place) . Running hurts everywhere.

Be very careful with the ruck running and if you do it make sure it’s on even terrain.

I'm getting ready for the biggest rejection of my life lol. Wanted some quick tips from anyone; going for Army, I got an 89 on the ASVAB, my next step is MEPS. Pretty sure that's the last step though cause I got psoriasis. The answers already out there plentiful on the net, which is a DQ, but was wondering if anyone else got anything to say or add to that. Like does physical shape or fitness level have anything to do with the chances of actually getting a medical waiver, is it all random, is it a straight no, etc. Recruiter only knows so much as well, and no one knows till you get there. I'm still headed to MEPS regardless, but would take any other extra knowledge. Thanks in advance.

I'm honestly so confused now, he recommends to not go over 45lbs for your rucks and have that be your max, then some other guy says no short heavy is way more imporant you should be able to cruise with 60-70lbs at 12:00 / 13:00 min/mile pace forever then some other expert says no this and that x y z etc. etc. etc. What is the actual concrete answer to what one should be doing to be prepared I'm confused as hell I don't even know anymore.

Rucking. You'll be doing it every day. Literally all the time. Running not so much and the additional thing is any running you are doing will be with a fucking ruck so it's in a way still two-thirds rucking. The times (for real) where you'll need to be sprinting around for miles without any gear on are going to be niche at best. If you're evading you'll likely be in gear, if you're bounding/peeling you'll likely have at least some gear, tabbing to and from objectives more often than not full gear. Isolated barebones bodyweight running really is going to be rare, you need to be able to do long distances with weights but also need to be able to move very, very fast and safely with weight too.
