The Rob Allingham special interview unpacks the evolution of recording industry of South Africa. This interview was filmed in 2023, May 15.
Music historian, consultant, former archivist at the Gallo Record Company
After completing a degree in history at the University of California, Allingham left the USA in 1975 for South Africa to work in the (steam) railway sector, and eventually the film industry.
Owing to his interest in "race records", a vast private collection of shellacs and wealth of knowledge, he eventually became the first and only archivist thus far of the Gallo Record Archive in 1990. To this day he still remain renowned archivist and music historian.
