Just finished watching this review of the Crux, and I have to say, it was absolutely amazing! The depth of detail you provided was incredibly helpful, and your passion for cycling really shines through. I particularly appreciated the line of questioning you addressed that comes with deciding on a bike like this. It's evident that you put a lot of effort and thought into creating content that is not only informative but also engaging watching some of the scenery you train on. I feel much more confident about what to look for now and what sort of future adjustments to consider making on a new off-road bike thanks to your review. You have a real talent for this. Keep up the fantastic work Patrick!!

Hey Eli! Thanks 🙏 I highly recommend a bike like this if you are into the whole unbound - gravel locos - Lifetime Grand Prix series of gravel racing. Personally I just like training and racing on courses where there is minimal risk (as in sketchy or technical downhills etc). The only reason I upgraded to the 3t exploro race max is bacause a. It’s an Italian brand and I built an IRL relationship with them b. The race max is awesome c. more stability d. The race max feels like it wants to ride for long distances (300+k) and being I would like to do an event like badlands / basajaun in the future it is more geared towards those types of rides. Otherwise I would still be riding the crux and I still highly rate it

This is one of the best Crux video review !!!!!!👍🏻 I have a Crux too and is the best gravel bike to do all. Very light (my Crux is 17.5 pounds with pedals), FAST, comfortable (is impressive because is a racing bike, but you can feel the carbon fiber quality) and easy to fit. Amazing bike !!!!

Patrick is spot on. I got this bike. Put a Rudy front shock with 45mm tyres on and the bike rides out of this world. I put a set of 650b wheelset for extreme rough gravel 1100km gravel race and it was the right bike choice. Don’t ride my sworks epic mtb bike anymore. Or my road bike. This is 1 bike that you just want to ride. 👍🏻

Patrick, I echo your comments 100% as I've owned my Crux for about a year and a half and it is my go-to fun bike! That is saying something as my road bike is an S-Works Aethos! Like you, I bought the comp model, stripped it down and upgraded to Force 1x drivetrain (mechanical), Roval Terra carbon handlebars and Roval Terra carbon wheelset. I use Crank Bros. "11" pedals and the bike comes in at 17.25 lbs. The final build was around $6500; about half the cost of the S-Works. (The money saved was spent on a second Crux comp for my GF, though the build is stock with the exception of Roval Terra bar upgrade) The bike is a total blast! If your reading this, you should get one and know that the extra bling for the S-Works is not necessary.

Man, you convinced me.. i did quite some research before, and i found out that the crux comp must be THE bike to get if you want a light & fast do-it-all bike if you don‘t have unlimited budget. Specialized is known for beeing expensive spec-wise, but there is simply no competition to this bike in this price range on the market right now. Swap the wheels maybee like you did, and this bike offers everything i could ever ask for. Fast group rides or training onroad without penalty, going cross-country whenever i want to. It‘s a road bike, a cyclocross race bike and a gravel/adventure bike merged into one (!) bike without almost any drawbacks. It‘s a sum of small nuances that an inexperienced cyclist may not notice, but specialized really nailed it with the overall design of the crux. Very few to no bikes like this are available from other manufacturers. Great video, it got me excited to hit the road now…
@PatrickDelorenzi

Yo Hans, thank you fo the comment. I'm still convinced the Crux is THE BEST one bike to rule them all at this budget. The only bike that has come out recently, which on paper is better, is the Wilier Rave slr. But it is INSANELY EXPENSIVE, so I would still go with the CruX 🔥

This video is absolutly incredible. Thank you! I haven’t ridden much since the 90’s when I was on a Trek 820. I have pipe dreams of group riding with hardcore roadies. But, the casual weekend rides and suddenly peeling off onto a single track is where it’s at! My other top choice is a Cervelo Aspero. Because I’m so new to the details, the 9/50 cassette you mentioned literally BLEW MY MIND. With this, I imagine keeping up with the spandex roadies!

@@PatrickDelorenzi I'm curious if you feel like with the garbaruk larger cassette, you're cadence/steps are too big in your smaller cogs in road riding scenarios? I'm really drawn to your strategy of getting the COMP and then upgrading wheels/cassette, especially with half off sales I'm seeing on the comp currently in my size... I'm just not sure I want to go 1x 11-speed for a bike I'll be using primarily as a road bike/fast commuter bike. thanks.

Great video man! Watched it 2 times start to finish ;-) Just bought the Crux comp as well - after very long considerations ;-). But couldn't resist anymore when I found a new crux comp of 2022 for 2800 euro. I like the approach of one bike to do it all, but will probably go for 2 wheelsets. one for road (light, carbon, for 28-30mm tyre), one for gravel (45mm). Would also swap the stem with a suspension stem if I would go for tough gravel - the Vecnum.

Eventhough you've recommended against getting the older Crux models, I own Specialized crux pro 2014 and couldn't be more happier with it. It is as light as 8 kg with carbon wheels, handles sharp and accurate and can take up to 40mm tyres, which for me is quite enough. Also, running 2x setup with 52/36 owning every route and have even done Ironman Nice with 2400m climbing in 180k. I would say if you have the chance for a good deal on older models, you get a top tier versatile bike which literally can perform anywhere with certain modifications (Had to adjust front derailleur to fit 52 ring).

Awesome, reasonable review and nice breakdown of the bike itself and its spec’s. Totally new to me, Garbaruk‘s cassettes are pretty good in terms of range and weight class. Amazing! Thanks for this inspiring review! Among the alternatives you considered (it briefly pops up in your video) there’s the OPEN U.P.P.E.R. which is a very similar bike, and I would say almost all the things about the U.P.P.E.R. that you state about the Crux. @outdoorbros has done a comparative review about the similarities and differences between the two bikes. He notes that the U.P.P.E.R. is ever so slightly more tilted towards the road bike characteristics. The U.P.P.E.R. fits 1x and 2x groupsets. I run it with a mechanical 1x13 Campagnolo Ekar groupset with a 38t chainring and 9-42t (700C-38mm) and 10-44t (650B-48mm) cassettes. Weight in size XL is 7.66kg without pedals and cages. The U.P.P.E.R. has become my go-to bike for almost everything (I use a BMC TMR01 aero road bike when racing but ride the U.P.PE.R. for anything else).

Hey, great video, thanks! Independently from the actual frame I really like how you described your ideal mix of use cases. I'm actually looking for a new bike now for almost exactly the same purposes you mentioned and I have a few questions if you don't mind. Have you considered the Campagnolo Ekar groupset? The 6 higher gears on the cassette are so close (eg. 9-10-11-12-13-14) that when paired with the right ring in front (depending on your legs) I think it would be really great for structured road training and racing. Well, at least better than other 1by systems. Have you experienced any drawback from the lack of aero design on longer rides? I know it is not a big factor in training but for the occasional racing situation on 200km rides (if you really want to have just one bike) I think something like the Ridley Kanzo Fast could be better alternative (even though it weighs ca. 300 g more) and the frame costs roughly the same (EUR 3.5k) as the Specialized Crux 10r. (Or maybe the Factor Ostro Gravel in addition to the aforementioned Willier Rave SLR if you have unlimited budget.) p.s. I literally saw your video yesterday while wearing the same Nike Trail t-shirt :)
@PatrickDelorenzi
@PatrickDelorenzi Жыл бұрын
Hey Peter! Ekar groupset in bomb in my opinion, only thing I don’t know much about is mixing and matching components with other brands Lack of aero design is a factor for sure on long flat rides, or open gravel: I experienced a bit of that on the 200k race I did where I suffered a bit in the open flat sections, but it makes up for that in the climbs. Depends if you do more climbing or more flat stuff, for me it’s a lot of climbing so I like this design (but stay tuned for a big update coming soon). I think a great bike to consider as a one bike to rule them all is also the 3t exploro racemax, in addition to the ones you mentioned. Haha that bike trail shirt is sick! Happy riding man

Absolutely love this video! Could you explain further how you were able to upgrade the cassette to a 10-50? I didn't realize the SRAM Rival 1 has a max tooth capability of 42t? Looks like you were able to do that with the extender? Can I upgrade my Crux Expert (SRAM Rival XPLR eTap AXS) to the 10-50t cassette as well? Do you see any disadvantages from this upgrade to the 10-50t? Particularly on the downhill or group rides keeping up with others going fast on their road bikes? Thanks for the help!
@PatrickDelorenzi
@PatrickDelorenzi Жыл бұрын
Hey Christopher! Yes correct, the 10-50 requires the extender cage, which comes as a package deal from Garbaruk. I would say you can do this upgrade no problem with your groupset but maybe ask around in some Specialized CruX facebook groups, probably someone has already done it with your exact groupset. Regarding disadvantages compared to the stock cassette (11-46) there are NONE, the cassete is lighter, and gives more range both in the very low gearing (50) to climb, and the high gears to hang with friend on group rides. I hit 80kmph on one descent with this setup lol! And I routinely ride with friends who have roadbikes, all on roads, with no problem maitaing their speeds. I ride with them with this exact configuration, including 700x38x pathfinder pros. Happy riding!

Hi! I don’t know honestly, if I remember correctly to make mine work, the mechanic had to set it up in a way there was a bit of a trade-off where one of the central gears didn’t shift “perfectly”, but the 50 and all the others did

It is indeed a really cool bike. But a Diverge is still the better choice for most buyers, especially as a first/only bike. Best that the entry aluminum frames without the future shock are the best buys. Most people have no use for a racing frame. More relaxed geometry allows people to ride longer, and faster. Because in gravel, comfort is speed. Lack of adventure barnacles limits versatility. And the weight becomes less valuable when you start strapping on bags anyways. What Spec needs to do is release a carbon tier of Diverge without the future shock mess. That would be the bike to rule them all.

@@osint6372 Depending on your budget, Revolt Advanced 2 and 3 (and 0) are all 2x. If there's a frame you really like, and you can get it, I wouldn't let a 1x hold you back. For 1 components are ultimately consumables that will be replaced. You can probably find a take-off online to get at a discount (I built my entire Stormchaser with low-mileage used stuff). And, I don't think 2x are as important on unpaved rides. I'm rarely able to settle into a spot I can micromanage cadence. Even on flats, you have washboard and ruts. I do spin out on descents but hitting a sandpit at the bottom of a farm road at 36mph is already scary enough.

Hi Patrick, great review. I'm thinking of changing my bmc urs I bought 2 year ago because I found myself doing lot more of road than gravel, but I still want to have the option and I don't want to have 2 bikes. The cervelo aspero and the crux are the 2 finalist in my research. Have you tried the aspero and can you compare it to the crux?

Cervelo Aspero is a different bike as in it is optimized for aerodynamics vs weight and climbing efficiency. I was sticky between the Aspero and the crux also (I actually had purchased an Aspero in 2021 which ended up never being delivered so I switched LUVKY ME!). For me it’s not even a question: crux ALL DAY, it’s the best bike on the planet. The only option you could consider is the Wilier Rave SLR which is possibly better than the crux on paper. Hello Matthew, shimano hg does not go down to 10t cassette; it only goes down to 11-50 and I wanted the extra tooth. @@PatrickDelorenzi At "Just ride bikes" David did a good youtube on the comparison of Crux vs. Grail. Crux has no 2by because it is a CX competition bike where the track defines the gearing. @DilbertMuc i set up the crux in “road mode” with a 2x wheeltop electronic groupset around one month ago, video dropping Monday. It has clearance up to 42c tyres. Grail is a great bike but I don’t know if setup as a road bike it would behave like the crux in road mode Honestly what makes the crux so great (and in my opinion timeless) is that it’s basically a road bike and has absolutely nothing specifically gravel about it apart from the tyre clearance (as you say, it’s a rebranded CX bike). Where the crux falls apart is any gravel ride above 150k, it’s just too stiff in my opinion
