Now for this video, This video I had so much fun filming and mainly I filmed this just because the stars lined up and had 2 top tier demo bikes in my store at the same time and was able to have some fun on top tier bikes. I wanted to make a visually cool video that was enjoyable content, the results at the end I would love to know your feedback on the case because there was a clear winner on paper, but is that really the truth. Please let me know if you want me to continue doing more videos like this in the future :). Thank you to everyone who is always around always messaging me and emailing me. bruh, I was just about to say wind could have been a factor. Sometimes winds may me moving in the same direction but there are times when the wind dies down a little or you might get a few small gusts here and there. If you had all the time in the world it would be nice to test each bike 3x each and take the average of both to compare. Great video regardless~ I'd still take the BMC over the SL8 tho haha

I don't think you need apologise for any deficiencies in the test, it's pretty good, and if you want to do more of them this is a learning experience. 1W difference between runs is on par or better than some of the GCN efforts, and they're ex pros! You can't do anything about the wind, but maybe you can use a gadget to log the wind changes between runs and estimate the effect? Does Peak Torque so something like that? Traffic is a PITA and those vehicle blocking the lane could easily account for unexpected time differences. All I can suggest there is go out at 4:30am - 5:00am before the traffic builds up, but I think everyone understands that's not necessarily possible with family and job commitments. Power meter pedals swapped between bikes would be useful, run them in parallel with the Quarq meters you would see the difference, it probably won't be much though. Probably the toughest challenge is getting the bike setups identical, and holding an identical body position for the duration of the run. Slight changes in you body will affect the result quite a bit, but you're not Dan Bigham and you don't have access to a wind tunnel, so I wouldn't worry about being perfectly optimised. Maybe one of those phone apps could help? What matters is being consistent, but if that sucks the fun out of it then just don't worry about it. Most important thing is just to enjoy it, and just share your thoughts on the experience of each bike. Anyone complaining the test isn't perfect is in the wrong place.

The video is great content, very nice to see your opinions and facts about the bikes. As far as the science it’s not accurate, not because the power meter, but because in south Florida the wind is never flat or perfectly from the side; perhaps if you did 2.5 miles each way it would be closer. But again, your opinion and description of the bikes is very good content.

You have to repeat the test many times and average it out to come to an accurate conclusion. You would also have to alternate the order as winds pick up from morning to late afternoon more times than not (especially around the east coast). As little as 1 mph of tailwind/headwind can explain the difference.

Tough to do these comparisons given the variables it needs more runs to try to average them out. Obviously the wind, but also how you sit on the bike, slight fit changes - saddle height etc, being warmed up & a bit looser vs earlier on in a ride, riding over slightly different parts of the road, tyre differences if tge wheels aren't swapped, any change from vehicles or parked cars you pass etc etc. The powermeter differences can be reasonably large all mine measure differently. Even using an aerosensor to help you need to be strict on your testing protocol.

An exaggerated performance difference in this "TT-test", although the 2 different power meters reported only 1 watt, a negligible value even over such a short distance. Yes, the wind could be an acceptable reason of this massive difference, as well the smoothness of the roadway surface. Btw, I totally agree about the quality of these 2 bike: the best bike out there. @RyonBeachner7 ай бұрын
Gearing shouldn’t change anything when power is controlled. Power (Watts) = Torque (Pedal Force) x RPM (Cadence)/9.55 You can put out 220 watts with higher torque, and lower cadence, but also with higher cadence, and lower torque. Given the drivetrain losses should be identical, 220w should be good for x speed provided all other conditions are the same.
@BikesKomsCRO7 ай бұрын
This is good.. However you should run that test with the same exact tyre/width. And maybe run 2 or 3 times for avg time and then up the wattage and do it again and get an avg. Weight does not matter much on flats. You couldve encountered some more winds and that's the only reason sl8 could be faster.

Great video. imo there's just too many variables to get a proper comparison. I'd be happy with either bike tbh

Cool video. That is pretty fast for 220W was there a tail wind?
@marcinstyle857 ай бұрын
I would say that pretty normal watts for this speed on flat nice surface like these on video
@billscott68197 ай бұрын
@@marcinstyle85 No way unless there's a tail wind. a 160lb guy doing 220W on flat with no wind would be about 20.5mph. It would take about 290W+ to do 23mph on flat with no wind
@GCPerformance187 ай бұрын
yes it was a tail wind but honestly being this flat that is normal speeds
@billscott68197 ай бұрын
@@GCPerformance18 I hear you about speed but I live on a peninsula and ride 10k+ miles a year with a power meter for about 20 years by now. After a while it's easy math.

@@GCPerformance18 I also wanna say that I love this kind of video, and the comparison you did makes sense. Great videos.

The BMC looks better for sure :) But MVDP results proves that Canyon makes the best bikes ahah :) Oh no sorry Colnago bikes with Pogacar ! Or Cervelo maybe with Vingegaard... ? Hmm Remco is on a Tarmac right ? Sorry I'm lost now, lol :)

Did you wear a Heart Rate monitor , if so , how similar were the 2 readings ....
@GCPerformance187 ай бұрын
I do not, i do not wear a heart rate monitor all though I should, my parents have heart issues and I am scared to see my numbers while riding

GC to really deternine the root cause for the speed difference, you would have to dissect every single element of your comparison test from tire type, width, compound, pressure, wheel to wheel spec comparison....200 gram wheel weight diff means nothing on the flat, precise riding position comparison, everything. The BMC did have the narrower handlebar. Agree a bit shocking. You could repeat the test by swapping wheelsets and/or handlebar. Devil is in the details, but I know one thing for sure having ridden today in Florida in the wind on my 2012 Roubaix SL3 with mechanical Rival and Campy alloy wheels which weighs 17 lbs, at 70 y.o., I could have held your wheel for that test. 🙂 Thanks for the content. PS. I am your height but lighter. Your position on the bike looks good and appreciate your videos even though I am old school relative to tech. FWIW I do ride a narrow handlebar and 165mm cranks which is new school as I subscribe to the benefit of both having ridden all configurations for decades.

1w is not even .5 mph You in in the slop of the measurement .. the bikes are very even . The differences likely due to wind and traffic 1 mph with all thing equal is gonna require ~20w … so data is fishy but thanks for trying 😮 and no way SL8 is 20w faster then BMC
@GCPerformance187 ай бұрын
thank you for that

Too big of a difference over just 5 miles like you mention, power meter pedal is a good idea to control 1 more variable.

yea I wish for sure I did the pedals I regret it so bad

you ride by cars, that would have massive affect on result. Cars passing by are pulling you along

yea I am trying to give us real world experiences, majority of everyone who buys bikes will be riding in a bike lane along side cars

7ft difference in vert. but i would guess the cars driving by made the most difference.
