These two E Bikes are from the same manufacturer, have very similar ergonomics, and cost about the same amount of money but they ride very different on the trail. So which ebike is the best? It depends who the rider is and what experience they're after. The SL feels very lightweight and similar to a traditional mountain bike with electric assist. The Turbo Levo does feel like an e bike but it still maintains much of the snappy, lively, fun feeling that these bikes are known for. So would you prefer your e-bike to have more power or be light and agile?
The Turbo Levo SL Expert Carbon features the Specialized 1.1 motor that has a peak output of 240 Watts, a 320 Watt Hour Battery and it weighs in at 37.75 pounds.
It’s got the SRAM GX Eagle Drivetrain, Fox 34 Performance Fork coming in at 150mm, Fox DPS Elite Shock also in 150mm, and SRAM G2 RSC 4 Piston Brakes.
The Turbo Levo Expert Carbon features the Specialized 2.1 motor that has a peak output of 565 Watts, a 700 Watt Hour Battery and it weighs in at 46.5 pounds.
It’s got the SRAM X1 Drivetrain, Fox 36 Performance Fork coming in at 150mm, Fox DPS Performance Shock also in 150mm, and SRAM Code R 4 Piston Brakes.

At the age of 76, I had reached the stage where riding up steep trails I used to do was just not possible anymore. If I would do it, I ended up walking a lot and felt like death after returning home. My new Specialized Turbo Levo Comp changed all that. Now going uphill is as fun as going downhill. Pick a line and charge through the rocks. You can always detune the full power Comp to get more of a workout, but you can't uptune the SL for more assist. My age, combined with my weight with gear of 220 pounds made the full power Comp a perfect choice!

Thanks for that video. You did an excellent job comparing the two. I was impressed with how well you spoke while riding, but that helped get more info on technical terrain. I’m looking for more of a traditional mtb for my wife to easily keep up without feeling like she is holding me up. I really like the idea of the SL. 👍🏼

I must say, I have watched at least 100 ebike videos and this is by far the best presented, most useful video I have seen. Thank you so much for this! As I am now 66 and wanting/needing to transition to an ebike from my carbon Santa Cruz TallBoy and being a former KTM 500 rider I am torn as to whether I want the full or lightweight class of ebike. I don’t do drops or big jumps because my bones don’t heal like they used to. Being in Cincinnati and miles from any bigger riding trails and having nothing like the Rockies around me (oh how I loved riding them), I’m thinking the full size bike might be too much. I don’t need all the assistance and want something light and flickable because it’s a lot of tight twisty turns around here. But I have to say, I was addicted to that power of my KTM! Sooo much fun! Thanks again.

You did a great job on this unbiased review!! I demoed both and what I determined was my tight / twisty trails would rarely allow me to use the turbo mode on the standard Levo and the shorter wheel base of the SL made it easier to manage around the tighter trails.

Fantastic review, Tucker. I’ve got the new S-Works Levo and it’s definitely a best in class e-mountain bike. Agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the Levo and I’m definitely glad I didn’t get the SL. I get insane range and as you mentioned, I de-tuned the level of assist with the Mission Control app and typically get in excess of 60 miles range with 5-6000 feet of climbing and a wicked cardio workout with plenty of range left when I get home. It’s a total blast!

Great review and tbh one of the best I have seen yet between Levo Turbo and Levo SL. I was asking people on forums and trying to get the information from other reviews on the pedal feel while climbing. Previious bike 3 years ago was a 2018 SC Nomad 190 fork and 180 rear coil. Then was slowing my friends down on the uphills so bought the Gen 1 Kenevo which is awesome and enjoy it very much. My dilemma is that I really like with the Kenevo its so plush and forgiving if you mess up a little. It's like you cant go wrong in almost any scenarios feels like my dirtbike. But I do miss a little lighter ride for throwing it around a little 🤣and had my eye on a used 2022 Kenevo SL or a Levo SL with and upgrade the suspension to 170 front and rear. I know the new 2023 Levo SL has a 1.2 and 50 NM motor but that is also pretty pricey so that is off the table right now. Now what i was having a hard time with is to get something that I have to give 80% human power on the high setting when climbing up some steep trails. I use my Kenevo in Eco mode 90% of the time and only in trail mode 8% and Turbo 2%. Trail and Turbo is only used when I am so tired that I want to hit some doubles, gaps, or table tops on local trail where I need some speed (along with proper jump form) and have no energy left to really to get the clearance. My friends are in shape and can climb for days where I struggle on the uphills. I don't mind climbing at a slow rate n an ebike, but I do need to know that the SL in Turbo mode will assist more like 60-80% support with 20-40% human power. I would like to make it up the hill if it gets a little steep and technical and this video got me a little closer to those answers. SL version in Turbo feels like a Trail mode on the Turbo Levo (non SL) version. I don't have any bike shops near me that carry these bikes to demo. They usually have one for sale per year in a 5 hour drive (New Brunswick Canada) in any direction so I need to rely on good videos like this to help me gauge this pricey purchase.

Great comparison and thank you for interjecting your personal thoughts. I own a Levo and I love it. Yes it's heavier, especially to load on bike rack, but once I put it on the ground it's a beast. I too purchased the bike to change my boring slow tedious uphills to something much more fun. I take all the advance lines now, and I'm covering more ground, longer rides, my wife and I are just having a blast!

I love my Powerfly, the power and multiple batteries just gets me completely rocking trails with my friends. All those uphill flow, kickers and emtb lines are fantastic. I DID buy and Levo SL carbon for riding by myself. It has JUST enough boost to help when you want it, to make the trail JUST a LITTLE more fun but also gives you burn. Both are my weapons of choice for different things. The Powerfly made me a better rider on my hardtail, the SL makes me a better rider on my Powerfly.

Nice job with comparison! 18:00 really fun different activity in Turbo on the Levo.... Yep, go further, faster, and makes the uphills fun and flowy instead of slow and plodding. 22:00 yep, Levo more versatile and more fun on the downs as well as the ups. 27:00 take BIG rides way into the back country. Be good to talk about state of charge after taking both bikes on this loop? Not sure who the SL is better for. Maybe someone who can't get a 48 lb bike into their basement?...

You may have just stopped me from spending a lot of money on a S Works SL. I have a EMTB with the Shimano E8000 in it and I love the power. Trail mode is the best mode for that bike almost everywhere. It's a 48lb bike and I was wanting a lighter bike as I mainly ride with analog MTB's and pretty fast riders. I bought a Levo SL. I rode both and while I liked the uphill power of the regular Levo I wouldn’t want to muscle a 50lbs bike all day. Excellent review not just of the Specialized ebikes but of ebikes in general. Most common comment I hear; “I’m not ready yet”. Most of them don’t really understand, and won’t understand, until they actually throw a leg over one for a spin at which point most of them will have that “Aha” moment where they “get it”. I too pedal a fair amount as well and you’re assessment of the different experiences and your expectations when you pedal or ebike is spot on. Well done.

It eats up everything you throw at it. You will not be disappointed with either one. How does it do on Northeast woods? In Maine and we have a lot of tight single track with mixed woods, roots, and elevation change. The Levo seems like the equivalent of a large all mountain/enduro, whereas most of the trails would seem too tight. Sure, more powered, but also heavier and longer chainstay. (maybe mullet witll help in 2022)

good comparaison, i just have one question, are you SURE that the range on the SL is so much shorter that you keep mentioning it ? in theory a 240 watts motor will last the same time with a 350wh battery than a 480 motor with a 700wh battery.that's the whole point behind the smaller battery on the SL, about the suspension, with Fox's reshuffle of their lineup i hope to see 36s on the SL and a 38 on the Levo next year :)

My Analog Fatbike is 41 lbs. My Trail bike is 30lbs. With my Asthma and poor O2 Saturation means I fade out pretty fast when doing hills of any type. Looks like the SL is in my future. I just need a little helper keep up with the group on the ups.

I just got a levo sl today after I had 55 lb full 720W e-bike for two years. Im a after work rider maximum 4hr ride. I only used only 30% of battery every time when It’s done. I kept thinking why I carry extra weights? I’m not using it. I’m 60s but still love to pedaling. I’m also riding motorcycle.

You sound like me. Currently I have a older turbo Levo 54 lbs. I'm 67 and kind of getting tired of the wt. and hoping the SL will feel like I'm in control instead of the Levo ""taking" me. My only worry is it not having enough power. Currently I ride 15, 30' 50 % and can ride 35 miles and still have 50% batt. A good test ride on the SL is in order.

both those bikes are awesome. i ended up with the Levo Expert. I wanted the ebike to be an ebike and the non assisted bike to be the non assisted bike. That said. The levo rides much lighter than what it is. Geo is spot on and handles amazing.

Thanks for the video very well done comparison. I’m currently on a Haibike XDURO all mountain and hate the weight but love the power. You nailed it with “normal” mtb and is what I’m looking for. I’m 50, had both hips replaced a few years ago and had a pace Maker installed this year. EMTB has allowed me to continue adding to my many years of riding. Just wish I could decide between light and right or sticking with what I have. Thanks for the video.

hey bud great review on these two e bikes, very helpful. i noticed when you were on flat ground you turned off both batteries on both bikes and seems the SL had very little drag and you said you can ride out if the battery was dead, but for the turbo it seem like there was a whole lot more drag and you were struggling. this looked like it was on flat ground and i was wondering if you got to the top of you destination and was on your way back down hill, is there still that drag from the motors if you turned them off going down hill? i am entertaining the idea of an Ebike because i am fairly weak at climbing and recently suffered a knee injury and recovering.

My bud has an SL. he rides it with motor off with his family of casual gravel bikers and light trail. Then eco most of the time, and trail when trying to keep up with the A group. As an asthmatic I have the skills to ride A group, but can't keep up on the hills. Low O2 Saturation has me falling behind fast. Need to decide on SL or Heckler. but this video was very good within brand.

What I really like about the full sized Levo is that In the lower power modes (20-50%) I get linear power assist that I can count on for technical climbs. This makes for a very natural feel with a consistent ratio of power. Maxing out the motor power really messes with my ability to climb the challenging stuff (like when using turbo). I think I would hate the SL for this reason but could be completely wrong.

I have the carbon expert super fun. The motor breakdown sucks though. The motor only lasted only two months. The bike shop let me know after I bought it I should expect the motor to breakdown every few months. If your going to buy one be aware it will have problems.

Fantastic comparison. I’ve been wobbling between buying SL v Turbo. Handling is important, like bunny hopping and manuals. I thought the heavier wouldn’t allow such antics but little cut-ins in the video showed it handles fine. Being in my late fifties, so my fitness will reduce regardless of how much I train, the Turbo looks to be the better investment as I can wind up the wick as my legs weaken.

Thanks for the great review. Glad I got the Levo instead of the Levo SL. However, do you think the Levo SL may be better suited to less experienced riders who may not want to go fast over technical terrain - i.e. it is easier to handle at those slower speeds? I want to get an e-bike for my wife and am considering the Levo SL for her...

Really excellent review and personal input from author, thank you! As a Levo owner I will say, as you mentioned, you can set your your Mission Control app to 5-10% in Eco, just to give you a very slight boost to compensate for the weight and drag of the bike and motor, and still give you an excellent workout. You can adjust these percentages to suit your workout needs, and simulate a regular bike.
