They should've just gradually reduced oxygen levels while increasing the nitrogen equivalent. This causes a painless kind of asphixia that even feels pleasant and euphoric, hence why Nitrous Oxide is used as a satisfying inhalant. In addition, nitrogenic suffocation would leave a more viable corpse for later study, as poison gases tend to be destructive to biochemistry.

it's clipped! they don't show the whole thing and how hard that actually is, it's a fictional dramatic account of the escape and is paraphrased in brief so they have time for other stuff in the movie but ya everybuddy needs more funding and then these type of incident wouldn't occur, not to say that they do
