I was stationed at Hickam AFB for 3 years and in all my time I don't ever recall seeing landings in that direction. Very rare approach. I used to go to this neat little area right on the perimeter fence next to 8L. It was about 100 yards from the hold point on the runway. It also had a clear line of sight all the way down where planes would turn into final approach. The great thing about it was that it was on base so nobody was ever there to bother me or get in the way. I loved it there and sure do miss it.
@Adamweber5183 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I’ve been in and out of HNL about a dozen times and all but this video have been a landing on 8L. That sounds like a great little spot!
@LottiDotti763 жыл бұрын
@@Adamweber518 it was. If you ever go back look for a little patch with dirt roads off the left side of 8L as you land. It is an area used for field training on base that was rarely used. Nice and tucked away.

I love any landing in HNL. I've done this westward approach twice and love the views of Waikiki and Honolulu. The pilot has to do a sudden twist of the aircraft right before landing to do a final line up. It's a fun approach.
@jeremims90442 жыл бұрын
Very unusual approach. The prevailing trade winds mean you usually come in from the west (Kapolei) side and land that way. I was raised in Hawaii and have been back and forth to the mainland a million times and I may have taken this approach that is in the video once or twice

For some reason the algorithm is recommending this video from 2017 to a lot of people lately. The comments are fun to see! Several have noted they’re still looking for the “spectacular” part of the landing. While I agree that was probably hyperbole I do think it’s a pretty cool approach. I still haven’t landed this direction since this day in many trips back. The spectacle was referring to the approach and not the actual touchdown but I probably could have worded it better. Anyway, thanks for watching and hope you enjoy the unique views of Waikiki and downtown Honolulu!

For me, I am more the type that wonders when the last time the volcanic crater seen at the shore at 0:10 erupted. Same for the one that can be seen popping out of the middle of the city like at 01:50. Probably thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years ago. Certainly not recent.

The local time is... do they have to say local time? What other time would people want to know?
@sean20153 жыл бұрын
I feel silly telling you this but airplanes frequently travel across time zones, hence the use of the term "local time". What I'd like to know is why gate agents always say "last and final boarding call". Isn't "last" redundant when you say "final"?
@davidjames16843 жыл бұрын
@@sean2015 Passengers should know it is local time. People could be travelling from many different origins. What do those passengers expect, that the flight attendant will go to each seat and tell them the time in their homeland? Also no, last is not redundant when you say "last and final boarding call" cuz they said last before final, so it is the word final that may be redundant in that context.

I had to move from Hi recently because of the cost of living there. Rent prices were just getting ridiculous and the price of food and other basic needs was unbelievable. I repaired automobiles for a living and mechanics don't get paid very much there. I miss Hawaii very badly being born a raised there and sometimes I feel like going back even if it means going homeless. But not really a good ideal.
