I'm thinking Spector already had serious mental health issues before he became a music producer. I think they got worse over time as do mos untreated mental health conditions.

It’s real easy to be a tough guy bully when you’re armed to the teeth and have big line backer bodyguards standing right behind you. Take away the guns, the bodyguards, the wig on his head and the lifts in your shoes, you’re not so tough anymore.

A brilliant music producer but seriously crazy and personality disordered. He sentenced Ronnie Spector to house arrest for the crime of marrying him. She's lucky to have escaped. I think the one guy was right when he said almost inevitable the way things finally ended.

Spector's sons Gary and Donté both stated that their father "kept them captive" as children, and that they were "forced to perform simulated intercourse" with his girlfriend. According to Gary, "I was blindfolded and sexually molested. Dad would say, 'You're going to meet someone,' and it would be a 'learning experience'." Donté described himself as coming "from a very sick, twisted, dysfunctional family"

Very excited to watch this. Seems to wear its bias against Spector on its sleeve - with that said, it’s hard to defend a man who was accused of such heinous crimes. Nonetheless, I hope the movie takes a detailed look at his lengthy and legendary career and doesn’t just focus on the unfortunate events of 2003 and afterwards. I don’t think it’ll be the type of movie to be ambiguous and let the audience decide if we was good or evil - like ‘Agony & Ecstasy’ and the HBO Pacino flick - it looks like it definitely casts Spector as the villain of his own story, which I don’t think is entirely inaccurate, I just hope the approach is somewhat nuanced. Either way, I’m a diehard Spector fan and a lot of this footage/photos I have never seen before, so that’ll be worth price of entry alone. I wish there’d be a tie in compilation of all of his works, but given the light they’re casting him in, I think they’re focusing more on the Lana situation than the music. Can’t wait to watch tho.

Spector was not brilliant. Someone was going to discover REVERB - it happened to be him. He did ONE THING WELL. When that failed in the 21st century he faltered and dissolved. His career had some highs but he was a miserable man, beat his wives, bought kids as presents and then used them as sex objects-he pimped them out and raped them himself - the twin boys - the daughter Nicole is pathetic. If he was my father I would have hated him but she's in it for the bucks. He was worth millions. Pathetic.

@@andrewclough660 I included the word “just” to mean that while I wanted the murder trial to be covered, I didn’t want it to be the SOLE focus. Just finished the doc and as a Spector fan I thought it was great. It exposed his terrible side and terrible actions, while also showing his humanity and other sides. I meant to disrespect to Ms Clarkson with my comment, I was just hoping for the doc to cover Spector’s whole life, not just 03 and onwards and the documentary fulfilled that wish!

A friend I trust saw part one and said it was a really sleazy presentation, although so many of this kind of exploitative films are. The story certainly lends itself to it, and having read Ronnie's autobiography, I don't doubt the veracity of this kind of portrayal of his life. Still, I can't help but be a fan of Spector's music - it is the soundtrack of my life, especially in the '50s through early '70s - but he was always said to be a heinous human being. I told someone who knew him in his early career, in and out of the studio, that as a music producer myself, I'd wanted to be a sane Phil Spector. "You couldn't," they said. "There never was a sane Phil Spector." I've heard it said that art is expressed neurosis; perhaps in Spector's case it was expressed psychosis. That psychosis might be the mental space in which he envisioned all those incredible sound textures. I've had fellow music fans call me on not divorcing myself from his music, but I have a bright line separating the person and the art. That said, having seen this trailer, I'm not sure I want to subject myself to this, although there are interviews with music personalities I know as well as know of that I would like to see. To be decided.... And please, if you want to comment on this, hold the moral judgments. I understand the dichotomy, and a lot of classical musicians and composers we revere were awful individuals as well.

That is why I prefer watching independent doccies cause these high profile ones always seems to make up sh*t or push their own narrative onto the story. I think I will pass on this one thank you for the heads -up I already know the case so I am going to watch the movie rather cause at least I know that is meant to be "Based" not fully factual

Say what you will about this documentary, I’ve never seen a true crime piece humanise a victim the way Lana Clarkson was. I had never heard of her before watching this, yet I came out feeling the most deep, crushing, helpless pain for this woman I never met who could have done so much and was just *so much*…I’ve gone and watched a lot of her work after this. She was beautiful, inside and out, striking, memorable, smart, warm, ambitious and funny. Rest in piece Lana, and rest in peace Ronnie Greenfield. Both magnificent women who deserved better than this creepy little weirdo and his nasty hair.

I really dislike productions that focus so heavily on the DA's role, feeding his narcissism. But, my criticism is greatest of a system that fails victims and their families along with those unfairly convicted. Appeals only move forward with "new evidence." The same stringent criteria should be required for DA's seeking to retry a case they did not win. It is tortuous for all involved, and as in this case, even a wealthy defendant didn't receive the best defense in the second trial. Justice shouldn't be about a lawyer's ability to spin a story about events he wasn't present to witness. And, it is used over and over in the US to manipulate jurors when there is no factual evidence of guilt, and they would rather convict an innocent man rather than allow a guilty man go free. In this production, the second trial was a farce.
